Virtual and hybrid teaching: what has been a stopgap solution for many in recent years is becoming increasingly important for foreign language teaching today. This book presents current developments ...in digitised language teaching and provides an outlook on its future. The authors offer a comprehensive overview of teaching concepts for virtual and hybrid teaching. They also present concrete suggestions and numerous tried-and-tested examples for practical application. The focus is on the role of the teacher in the learning process. A commentary on the use of chatbots, such as ChatGPT, in teaching picks up the debate on the topic of artificial intelligence and sheds light on its relevance for language teaching.
The overarching aim of this book is to offer researchers and students insight into some currently discussed issues at the Swedish as well as the international research frontline of Language Education ...in a selection of up-to-date work. Another aim is to provide teachers, teacher educators and policy-makers with input from research within the interconnected disciplines of Applied Linguistics, Language Education and Second Language Acquisition. The volume includes five examples of topical research on language education and the authors are internationally renowned scholars. The chapters are based on a selection of talks presented at the 1st ELE Conference (‘Exploring Language Education’), which was held at Stockholm University in 2018. Employing a broad thematic scope, the volume reflects the variety of perspectives on language education brought together at the conference by authors working in diverse areas of the field and in different parts of the world. With the first ELE conference the organizers wished to call attention to the intersection of the global and the local, in terms of linguistic and cultural diversity, which may inform both research questions and language education practices. Issues related to multilingualism, Global Englishes, and experienced tensions between research and practice are examples of generally shared issues that were brought up by many speakers. The chapters of the book represent this variety of themes and illustrate how different regions and communities are contingent on local prerequisites and circumstances, leading to a number of particular challenges and assets when it comes to language education. The chapters represent different parts of the broad array of research directions that can be discerned under the large umbrella of Language Education, zooming in on the Western context, specifically Sweden, Canada and the United States. Two of the plenary speakers from the conference, Nina Spada and John Levis contribute in the volume. In Spada’s text different ways to bridge the gap between research and practice in language education are discussed, an issue highly relevant to all of those interested in collaborative research between researchers and teachers. The second chapter, written by Levis, presents current research on phonology and the importance of pronunciation in second or foreign language communication. These two are followed by three chapters reporting on empirical studies. Amanda Brown and colleagues present their work on translanguaging in the English L2 classroom, giving an extensive overview of ideological stances from the last decades on the use of mother tongues vs. target language only in the language classroom. Liss Kerstin Sylvén reports on a recent study on very young Swedish learners of English, their exposure of English before school age and outside school and the role that this exposure plays for the development of English language proficiency. Finally, Gudrun Erickson and colleagues, present a questionnaire answered by a large number of modern language teachers in Sweden. The study explores the teachers’ answers on questions about their professional satisfaction, their use of the target language in the classroom, and the curricular status of foreign languages studied after English. Despite many critical points raised by these teachers, the survey reveals that they would not change profession, were they given the chance. The book ends with an Afterword by Stellan Sundh, University of Uppsala.

Drawing extensively on the expertise of teachers of German in universities across the UK, this volume offers an overview of recent trends, new pedagogical approaches and practical guidance for ...teaching at beginners level in the higher education classroom. At a time when entries for UK school exams in modern foreign languages are decreasing, this book serves the urgent need for research and guidance on ab initio learning and teaching in HE. Using the example of teaching German, it offers theoretical reflections on teaching ab initio and practice-oriented approaches that will be useful for teachers of both German and other languages in higher education. The first chapters assess the role of ab initio provision within the wider context of modern languages departments and language centres. They are followed by sections on teaching methods and innovative approaches in the ab initio classroom that include chapters on the use of music, textbook evaluation, the effective use of a flipped classroom and the contribution of language apps. Finally, the book focuses on the learner in the ab initio context and explores issues around autonomy and learner strengths. The whole builds into a theoretically grounded guide that sketches out perspectives for teaching and learning ab initio languages that will benefit current and future generations of students.
With the growing recognition of the need to broaden the definition of Interactional Competence (IC) for communication and learning, this monograph offers the first book-length treatment on the ...conceptualization, development and validation of IC assessment instruments. Combining psychometrics with discourse analysis, highlights of the book include: 1) evidence that a holistic IC construct – encompassing the sequential, emotional, logical, moral and categorial dimensions – can be assessed reliably, 2) a practical IC rubric that is adaptable to diverse languages and contexts, 3) demonstration that L2 speakers can have stronger IC than L1 speakers. The book argues that IC needs to be taught and assessed for both L1 and L2 speakers to promote fairness in language education. In this superb, meticulously designed, intellectually coherent book based on awardwinning scholarship, David Wei Dai takes the reader on a riveting journey tackling key challenges in assessing Interactional Competence. Ingenious and groundbreaking; there is no looking back. (Talia Isaacs, University College London) David Wei Dai’s book is an exemplary study of test development and validation. It breaks new ground in the assessment of Interactional Competence, and is an invaluable resource for novices and seasoned researchers alike. (Carsten Roever, University of Melbourne)
Corpus linguistics, German linguistics and the Teaching of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache – DaF) are strictly connected disciplines (cf. Fandrych/ Tschirner 2007). This ...notwithstanding their combination for descriptive, applicative and didactic purposes is still not widespread. In university teaching theory and practice, the connections are in fact mainly binary, between corpus linguistics and German linguistics, between German linguistics and DaF and between corpus linguistics and DaF. On the contrary, the present volume aims at bringing out the interconnections among all three disciplines; the use of empirical approaches intended to foster the development of linguistic and crosslinguistic awareness will play a central role. The focus of the volume is on morphology and syntax, two linguistic domains that are traditionally considered central to grammar and that are well suited to be understood and analysed by means of corpus linguistics corpus linguistics. Their analysis may serve as a model for other linguistic levels.
Germany has been a country of immigration for decades. Language support for immigrants is therefore not a new topic. However, massively increasing numbers of refugees reveal the gaps and challenges ...of the German education system in this area in particular. In schools, the area of German as a second language (DaZ) - and in particular language support - is particularly affected. This is precisely where this volume comes in. In addition to an overview of existing language support concepts, it offers promising ideas and concrete suggestions for improving the support offered. The authors show how intensive classes work, how needs can be sensibly determined and synergy effects used, and what opportunities the multi-collectivity approach offers. In doing so, they take both the perspective of the teachers and that of the students. The stated aim is to improve the urgently needed systematic language support in DaZ lessons.
The title of this Festschrift, Moving English Language Teaching Forward, is a tribute to Ragnhild E. Lund’s lifelong devotion to English language pedagogy and teaching. She is – in the words of ...Juliet Munden – “a Dame of English didactics”. Ragnhild would be the first one to share such praise with colleagues. All the authors of this book have in some way or other moved English language pedagogy forward together with Ragnhild, for example as co-writers, fellow doctoral committee members, colleagues at the University of South-Eastern Norway, or just good colleagues sharing the same commitment to English language pedagogy. As a researcher, Ragnhild is best known for her work in the field of intercultural competence, which made her one of the original members of the international Cultnet group. The initiative for this group was taken by Michael Byram, arguably the most influential theorist of intercultural competence development in the world. In this anthology, he writes about the first meeting of the Cultnet group in 1997 and charts some of the changes that have happened in “the cultural dimension” of language teaching since then.
