Changes to the landscape of higher education in the United States over the past decades have urged scholars grappling with issues of privilege, inequality, and social immobility to think differently ...about how we learn and deliberate. Thinking Together is a multidisciplinary conversation about how people approached similar questions of learning and difference in the nineteenth century.
In the open air, in homes, in public halls, and even in prisons, people pondered recurring issues: justice, equality, careers, entertainment, war and peace, life and death, heaven and hell, the role of education, and the nature of humanity itself. Paying special attention to the dynamics of race and gender in intellectual settings, the contributors to this volume consider how myriad groups and individuals—many of whom lived on the margins of society and had limited access to formal education—developed and deployed knowledge useful for public participation and public advocacy around these concerns. Essays examine examples such as the women and men who engaged lecture culture during the Civil War; Irish immigrants who gathered to assess their relationship to the politics and society of the New World; African American women and men who used music and theater to challenge the white gaze; and settler-colonists in Liberia who created forums for envisioning a new existence in Africa and their relationship to a U.S. homeland. Taken together, this interdisciplinary exploration shows how learning functioned not only as an instrument for public action but also as a way to forge meaningful ties with others and to affirm the value of an intellectual life.
By highlighting people, places, and purposes that diversified public discourse, Thinking Together offers scholars across the humanities new insights and perspectives on how difference enhances the human project of thinking together.

In this unconventional article inspired on the one hand by a reading of the prose poem Le Nénuphar blanc and on the other the works of Yves Bonnefoy and Bertrand Marchal among others, a graphic artist envisages the possibility of creating a new poetics in which poetry and drawing come together in a new art form.
Here we consider lyricism and its historical relationship to Mallarmé. Whether it is considered a genre, a literary movement or a way of relating to the world, the lyric occupies a special place in the history of a work. It is just as much connected to “traditional inspiration” as to the “critical poem”. The problem is a complex one, in so far as it is linked to how we read Mallarmé in the second half of the 20th century.

An indisputable part of the mystery of Hérodiade can be traced back to the numerous strands which Mallarmé has woven together to make this character the unique figure that she is. The aim of this study is to reveal the different models which lie hidden beneath the cold young girl such as Phèdre, Hippolyte and even Christ which are brought together in a work which seeks to rethink the debate between Christian and pagan art.
A re-interpretation of Un coup de dès jamais n’abolira le hasard (1897) is undertaken here using a modern phenomenon which has invaded the plastic arts. Defined as an electrical or electronic disruption, the glitch is seen as a way of disrupting video or plastic images. This decidedly anachronistic approach examines a fundamental disfunction at work in the texture of the poem which upsets our traditional ways of reading.
Mallarmé’s presence is found everywhere in the evolution of modern music. His ideas encouraged our criticism of the “emotive” music of the Romantics. Modern composers like to remain invisible producing works where subjectivity is largely suppressed. In the middle of the 20th century people in the Western world are becoming more aware of uncertainty. Inspired by Mallarmé, Boulez has cultivated the notion of “controled chaos”.
This comparative study takes Mallarmé’s ambivalent reception of Wagner and his music as a starting point. If previous studies have detailed Mallarmé’s qualms about Wagnerian drama, they have left out an important issue : Wagner’s systematic use of eroticism as a tool with which to secure the listener’s undivided attention. This article argues that Mallarmé did not oppose Wagner’s use of sensuality for puritanical reasons, but rather because he believed eroticism is better served by the imagination.
Madame Mallarmé figures in three poems. “Brise marine” associates the young woman with two other images which symbolically represent a straight-forward style of writing. In “Don du poème” Marie is depicted in a negative light. In fact Mallarmé distances himself not from his wife but from his earlier poetic style which he describes as a “horrible birth”. “Éventail de Madame Mallarmé” can be read as a more provocative piece if we interpret it as contrasting ways of fanning oneself, one of which evokes prose and the other poetry.

This article sheds some light on Deleuze's reading of Mallarmé with reference to Un Coup de Dés. In particular, it seeks to understand the approach adopted by Deleuze within the context of the philosophical ideas in circulation during the period 1950-1970 when French philosophy sought to turn its back on an earlier tradition.
