Fin da Se questo è un uomo e La tregua, Primo Levi dispiega di fronte al lettore una costellazione di personaggi: personaggi «pescati» dal vivo, «riprodotti con un’impressione soggettiva»; personaggi ...«spaccati» e «ricombinati» (non solo da tipi umani esistenti ma anche dalla tradizione letteraria). Questo volume offre una prima mappatura critica dei personaggi leviani, e mira a dare avvio a indagini sulla loro costruzione, sulla loro configurazione narrativa e linguistica, così come sul loro statuto ontologico all’interno del mondo possibile dell’universo letterario. Studiare l’opera di Levi attraverso gli «esemplari umani» che la popolano si rivela un ingresso privilegiato: illumina da una nuova prospettiva i debiti verso la tradizione romanzesca del novecento (soprattutto tedesca e anglosassone), l’uso della prima persona e le strategie di proiezione dell’io, la dialettica tra scrittura testimoniale e racconto fantastico, la componente morale in rapporto all’uso di alcune tecniche narrative, prima tra tutte lo straniamento, e infine il rapporto, sempre controverso, tra presa diretta e «arrotondamento» finzionale.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Montefiores were an international Jewish family including prominent bankers, insurers, and merchants. Four brothers of the family were also leading ...members of the amateur photography movement in Britain, Belgium, France, and Australia. An album containing photography now in the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney, but made by Eliezer Levi Montefiore in the Colony of Victoria, reveals aspects of his family's identity. The album reflects their role in the British colonisation of Australia, as well as their interest in the development of Australian national identity. The enthusiasm for photography manifest in the album was shared by the brothers across national borders, and so also reflects their transnational, diasporic experience. Furthermore, the album represents aspects of the family's class and gender identities, and functioned as a kind of visual primer for its recipient, Eliezer's young daughter, Caroline.
It is from the work of Levi, a canonical author of the testimony literature, that this article analyzes the role of memory in literary creation. Based on the relationship between memory, history and ...literature, and analyzing the author's testimonial writings, I intend to expose how the survivor's memory is present not only in the works that deal directly with the universe of the concentration camps, but also in his fiction and poems. For this purpose, I take Levi's poetry as a base, a part of his work whose read is still limited. Despite bringing a memorialistic connotation, Levi's poems are often placed below his testimonial narrative, and are considered a 'minor' part of his literature. However, I bring here the relationship that the 'primolevian' poetry establishes with memory and, consequently, with history. Thus, I intend to expose that the author's writings, born of his testimony and his memory, must occupy a prominent role, since they recall a dark past that insists on haunting humanity in the present.

E a partir da obra de Primo Levi, autor canonico da literatura de testemunho, que este artigo se propoe a analisar o papel da memoria na criacao literaria. Tomando como base as relacoes entre memoria, historia e literatura, e analisando os escritos testemunhais do autor, pretende-se expor como a memoria do sobrevivente esta presente nao somente nas obras que tratam diretamente do 'universo concentracionario', mas tambem em sua narrativa de ficcao e em seus poemas. Para isso, toma-se como base a poesia de Levi, vertente ainda pouco lida de sua obra. Apesar de apresentarem um peso memorialistico, os poemas de Levi sao muitas vezes colocados abaixo de sua narrativa testemunhal e considerados uma face 'menor' de sua literatura. Traz-se aqui, porem, a relacao que a poesia 'primoleviana' estabelece com a memoria e, consequentemente, com a historia. Assim, pretende-se expor que os escritos do autor, nascidos do testemunho e da memoria, devem ocupar um papel de destaque, ja que rememoram um passado sombrio que teima em nos assombrar no presente. Na leitura de Primo Levi, a temática do estrangeiro traz à luz a polarização, entre hostilidade e troca. O entrelaçamento entre barbárie, totalitarismo e antissemitismo se sobressai em diversos ...textos, permitindo um diálogo com pensadores como Arendt, Todorov e Bauman. O escritor parte da premissa iluminista de uma barbárie originária que só a razão poderia conter numa evolução humana linear. Contudo, em muitas narrativas, Levi representa o encontro com os estrangeiros, ou sua própria condição de estrangeiro em Auschwitz, sob o signo oposto a qualquer conflito. A percepção do estrangeiro, portanto, oscila entre dois polos que Paul Ricoeur identifica como simpatia e luta, mas afinal o embate com estranhos, mesmo quando problemático, desenvolve-se em episódios onde prevalece a ideia de hospitalidade (Derrida) como motor dos relacionamentos humanos. Contradizendo uma visão positivista, a percepção do inimigo e as divisões étnico-religiosas configuram-se sobretudo como uma construção política arbitrária da nossa "civilização". Palavras-chave: bárbaro, estrangeiro, Literatura, Primo Levi. In the reading of Primo Levi, the theme of the foreigner presents the polarization between hostility and exchange. The intertwining of barbarism, totalitarianism and anti-Semitism stands out in several texts, allowing a dialogue with intellectuals such as Arendt, Todorov and Bauman. The writer starts from the Enlightenment premise of an original barbarity that only reason could contain in a linear human evolution. However, in many narratives, Levi represents the encounter with the foreigners, or his own condition of foreigner in Auschwitz, in opposition to any conflict. The perception of the foreigner, therefore, oscillates between two poles that Paul Ricoeur identifies as sympathy and struggle, but after all the clash with strangers, even when problematic, develops in episodes where the idea of hospitality (Derrida) as a model of human relationships prevails. Contrary to a positivist view, the enemy's perception and ethnic-religious divisions are mainly shaped as a political construction internal to our "civilization." Keywords: Barbarian, foreigner, literature, Primo Levi. Nella lettura di Primo Levi, il tema dello straniero mette in luce la polarizzazione tra ostilità e scambio. L'intreccio tra barbarie, totalitarismo e antisemitismo afilora in numerosi testi, permettendo un dialogo con pensatori quali Arendt, Todorov e Bauman. Lo scrittore parte da una premessa illuminista di una barbarie originaria che solo la ragione può contenere, in una evoluzione umana lineare. Tuttavia, in numerosi racconti, Levi rappresenta l'incontro con stranieri, o la sua stessa condizione di straniero ad Auschwitz, sotto il segno opposto a qualsiasi conflittualità. La percezione dello straniero, dunque, oscilla tra i due poli che Paul Ricoeur identifica come simpatia e lotta, ma alia fine il confrontarsi con estranei, pur laddove si presenti problematico, si sviluppa in episodi in cui prevale 1'idea di ospitalità (Derrida), come motore delle relazioni umane. Smentendo una visione postivista, la percezione del nemico e le divisioni etnico-religiose si configurano soprattutto come una costruzione politica arbitraria interna alia nostra "civiltà".
