<!endif-->The second largest Portuguese city of Porto belongs among the most visited tourist areas of the country. Its historical part is listed on the UNESCO list. The cathedral rises on the hill and from the bell tower nearby, there is a spectacular view over the city. Local residents are "tripe eaters" for the Portuguese because once they used to give their best quality meat to sailors for their long-distance voyages. The burghers got rich on the trade in spices and wine as evidenced by the decoration of the St. Francis Church or the interior of Palácio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange Palace). Thanks to the program "Porto, European Capital of Culture 2001" we see significant changes all around - expanded sidewalks, underground garages or restored tram operation. The new center of photography now raised from a former prison and brand new Music house is about to be built.

This is an original joint project of the Czech Television and Czech Radio that freely follows "Karel Kyncl's Views" from Great Britain and "French Views by Adolf Bašta". However, in this case it is a visualization of radio feuilletons by foreign correspondents of the Czech Radio. They are rather kind of "tele-feuilletons", a brand new television genre. The aim of this series authors is to describe the European countries, their presence, customs, traditions, curiosities...

NEH Chair William R. Ferris called Juan E. Mestas' leaving "regrettable," but wished him well as he moved "ahead to a well-deserved new phase in his career." He has a "firm guiding hand" that has ..."helped lead the NEH through thick and thin since 1994." Mestas earned degrees in Hispanic languages and literatures from the Universidad de Puerto Rico (B.A.) and the State University of New York at Stony Brook (M.A. and Ph.D.). His scholarship has been devoted to study of the 19th-century Cuban poet and author José Martí. He is the author of El pensamiento social de José Martí: ideología y cuestión obrera (Madrid: Editorial Pliegos, 1993), and of numerous articles published in scholarly and educational journals. He is also a former editor of several periodicals. Mestas has translated from English to Spanish the works of Tennessee Williams, George S. Kaufman, and Neil Simon, among others. His poetry and short stories have been published in literary magazines and anthologies in Puerto Rico and the United States. An American Council on Education (ACE)/Pew Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in 1989-90, Mestas contributed to analyses of higher education's "new majority" and the role that federal funds play in encouraging the recruitment and retention of at-risk youth. He also participated in public policy discussions and higher education studies sponsored by the Pew Higher Education Roundtable, and aided the Delaware governor's office in conceiving pilot projects to address the state's dropout and underachievement problems.
Po panoramatu Červeného Kostelce, významného střediska tkalcovského a textilního průmyslu, následují krátké ukázky výrobních provozů četných dílen a továren, jež vznikly v tomto kraji.
The first performed scene is telling a local legend about a weaver who is walking through a forest and gets scared by his own weaving warp, which he regards to be a dangerous snake. This legend has given the origin of the folk name of weaver's warp - "hadovina" - refer to the film title. Then you can see the panorama of Červený Kostelec, a well known centre of weaving and textile industry. The film also offers short shots presenting individual production workshops and factories located in this region. We can follow purchasing of fabric from local weavers - in weaving mills belonging to Adolf Svoršík and Jan Škoda; the purchased materials are deposited in stores and then dispatched and transported in a small truck. In the factory belonging to Alois Hanuš they already apply modern industrial machines. The local companies can offer a wide assortment of products, beginning with so-called loop products, through curtains, decorated table cloths, linen, and ending up with men's shirts. The local production is also linked to manufacturing of card boxes. The film then presents a picture of Červený Kostelec and its surroundings, its prominent buildings (a church, school, theatre, the house where lived the famous writer Božena Němcová, etc.), and it also documents some social events, for example Sokol swimming race. Then the camera focuses on significant natural and architecture sights located in the close vicinity of Červený Kostelec - Jirásek Chalet in Turov, the tower bell in Červená Hora, the Slatinský Bridge crossing the Úpa River, etc.
Noise values in selected urban localities in the Czech Republic were subjected to long-term monitoring. Time sequences were analysed by linear regression. A statistically significant development in noise values (expressed by noise indicator Lden) was detected in almost one half of 40 monitored sites during 1994–2006. Lden was decreased in 10 instances and elevated in 7 instances. Changes in the various localities ranged from minus 4 dB/10 years (decrease) to plus 5.5 dB/10 years (increase). A total of 15 localities were evaluated in the 2009–2011 period; changes in trends previously detected were found in two cases. Over the whole monitoring period 1994–2011 an inter-annual change of over 4 dB was registered in three cases. An overall evaluation of all monitored localities for the whole monitoring period did not reveal any significantly increasing or decreasing noise trends. The detected changes are characteristic of urban long-term residential and built-up areas and cannot be generalized to other types of locality. Evaluation of the long-term noise monitoring confirms that this monitoring allows not only identification of local changes in noise levels, but also an overall assessment of the trends.

Literatura
"This program helped me focus my direction," Horez said. "It's an excellent program for both professional and personal goals. It's a good time to reflect, study, and look at leadership. It helps you ...do some self-assessment." "If I had to pick just one among the many important things I learned as an ACE Fellow, I'd say it was to understand the whole panorama of higher education in its many manifestations and from multiple perspectives," Juan E. Mestas said. "That expansion of my view would not have been possible without the ACE Fellows Program." "The ACE Fellowship had opened a world of possibilities for me," said Mestas, who, as part of his ACE fellowship year, served as part of the research and editorial staff of Policy Perspectives, an influential periodical produced by the University of Pennsylvania's Institute for Research on Higher Education. As part of his project for the ACE fellowship, he was asked by the president to study the relationship between the university and the surrounding community, focusing on volunteerism.
One recently created organization that has become instrumental in bringing together Latino academicians, for purposes of both scholarship and camaraderie, is the Midwest Consortium for Latino ...Research (MCLR). "Too many wars have been fought and too many people have been oppressed based on some sense of cultural superiority," said Juan E. Mestas, who raised the issue of a Florida school board that mandated teaching the superiority of American culture. "I cannot argue with the intention of teaching civic pride, national pride, or cultural pride. But as an educator, I know well that what we mean to teach is not always what the students learn. We might mean to teach pride and inadvertently drag in the seeds of arrogance." Latino voices from the Midwest have not been heard in the past, but as the Latino population continues to grow, so will its thirst for education. The future of Midwest Latino scholarship and research will certainly benefit from the MCLR's spirit of collaboration and proactive leadership.
