Objective To evaluate the impact of the “Movember” awareness campaign (men’s health campaign that takes place every November) on internet search trends for information online about prostate cancer ...and to compare the results with those for “Pinktober” (the breast cancer awareness campaign that takes place in October) in the Spanish language as an indirect measure of its effectiveness. Methods Google Trends was used to evaluate the monthly relative search volumes (RSV) of the terms “cáncer de próstata” (prostate cancer), “cáncer de mama” (breast cancer), and “Movember” from January 2009 to December 2019 both in Spain and worldwide (in the Spanish language). Breast cancer was used as a comparator of the campaign impact. Mean increase in RSV on-campaign and off-campaign was calculated and compared using the Mann-Whitney U test and Joinpoint regression analysis to assess loss or gain of interest. Results The term “cáncer de próstata” showed a statistically significant increase during the campaign months both in Spain (17.4%; P < 0.001) and worldwide (35.4%; P < 0.001). Both “cáncer de próstata” and Movember showed a decreasing trend worldwide and in Spain, while “cáncer de mama” showed an increasing trend. Conclusion The Movember campaign generates a statistically significant increase in the search trends on “cancer de próstata” (prostate cancer) during the month of November (both in Spain and worldwide); when compared with the breast cancer campaign “Pinktober” these increases are of a lesser magnitude but still significant, suggesting that the campaign is effective beyond the English language, although the interest has been decreasing throughout the years.

Aims
To examine ...the effectiveness of the Movember campaign at generating awareness of prostate and testicular cancers by examining Internet search activity.
Methods
Google Trends was used to review weekly Internet search activity from January 2004 to December 2015. We reviewed search activity for the search terms “prostate cancer”, “testicular cancer”, “Movember” and “moustache”. The weeks in November from 2004 to 2015 were examined for changes in search activity for our chosen search terms, which could be attributed to the annual Movember campaign. Search activity was recorded weekly and scored from 0 to 100 with 100 representing peak search activity.
Results
Mean search activity for each term during the weeks of Movember campaign. However, throughout the 11 years assessed, only the term “moustache” was consistently statistically associated with increasing publicity for the Movember campaign. Cancer awareness was inconsistent. Testicular cancer shows a significant association in only one of the 11 years and prostate cancer in only 2 years.
Conclusion
We concluded that the Movember campaign is consistently linked in the public consciousness with novelty facial hair and only weakly associated with an awareness of prostate and testicular cancers. Whilst the funding generated by the campaign should be commended, more could be done to link the campaign and moustaches to awareness of common male cancers.

Aims: The aims of the present study were to investigate referral patterns and the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) before and after the Movember campaign was initiated in Denmark. Methods: All men ...(n=2817) referred to the Department of Urology at Frederiksberg Hospital with suspicion of having PCa in the period 1 January 2007–31 January 2014 were identified. Based on the referral date, patients were categorised as pre-Movember (1 January 2007–31 January 2011) and Movember (1 February 2011–31 January 2014), respectively. Annual referral-rates/100.000 inhabitants were calculated and compared with rate-ratio (RR) tests. Results: The median prostate-specific antigen (PSA) at referral dropped significantly from 9.8 ng/mL in 2007–2011 to 7.9 ng/mL in 2011–2014, p < 0.001. The incidence rate of men referred with suspicion of PCa increased from 134/100.000 in the pre-Movember period to 168/100.000 in the Movember period (RR 1.25 95% CI 1.16–1.35). In contrast to what we anticipated, there was no increase in referral in the months following the campaign. The incidence rates of men diagnosed with PCa and low-risk PCa were similar in the Movember period and the pre-Movember period (PCa: RR 1.08 0.97–1.21; low-risk PCa: RR 1.29 0.98–1.73). Conclusions: After the initiation of the Movember campaign a significant decline in the PSA level at referral and an increase in the number of patients referred under suspicion of PCa was observed; however, only minor differences in referral patterns and PCa diagnosis were detected. The results indicate that the Movember campaign had a limited immediate effect on referral, however, it may have contributed to an increased awareness of PCa.
Movember is an annual “month-long celebration of the moustache” where men grow a mustache and raise money in the largest philanthropic endeavor for men’s health. Movember is predominantly an online ...campaign, and consequently, participants have actively embraced social media; this is evidenced in the 1,879,994 tweets collected during Movember 2012 in this research project. This article presents an analysis of Movember that examines how individuals use the numerous syntactical features of Twitter to engage in conversation and share information in order to develop a nuanced understanding of how people are utilizing social media as part of the social movement. While Movember has been successful in gaining traction on social media, the Twitter data point to surprising conclusions that have implications for understanding non-profits and social movements online. The following study provides two main contributions to existing sociotechnical social movement literature using a mixed-methods approach. First, the findings suggest that there is limited true conversation taking place although the stated purpose of the campaign is to facilitate conversation. Second, the findings identify that participants are more engaged with Movember as a branded movement than engaged in health promotion. While the tweets are conversational in form, they are largely not conversational in function, which points to Twitter being used as a broadcast tool in this context. These findings have broad implications for understanding how social media is used to engage individuals in social campaigns and engage with each other and share information.

Früh diagnostizierte Malignome des Hodens haben eine deutlich bessere Prognose als fortgeschrittene Tumoren. Durch diese Studie sollte eruiert werden, inwieweit die in ...Deutschland bekannten öffentlichen Aufklärungskampagnen zum Thema Hodenkrebs wie „Hodencheck.de“ von der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Urologie (DGU) bzw. die internationale Kampagne „Movember Foundation“, welche auf Hodenkrebs und andere Karzinome bei Männern aufmerksam machen möchte, die Hodentumorvorsorgementalität junger Menschen beeinflussen.
Methodik
Es wurden Studenten der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt anonym mittels Fragebogen befragt, ob sie die aktuell verbreitetsten Aufklärungskampagnen zum Thema Hodenkrebs kennen und wie das Hodentumorvorsorgeverhalten der Befragten ist.
Ergebnisse
Die Vorsorgekampagnen „Hodencheck.de“ und „Movember Foundation“ waren unter den befragten Studenten kaum bekannt. Bei Männern war bei 79,9 % der Befragten und bei Frauen bei 83,6 % keine der beiden Kampagnen bekannt. Männer wussten mit 35,2 % signifikant häufiger als Frauen (28,9 %), dass bösartige Hodentumoren die häufigste Krebserkrankung bei jungen Männern darstellen. Eine Selbstuntersuchung der Hoden hatten bereits 48,9 % der Männer zuvor schon einmal durchgeführt. Frauen hatten in 12,4 % schon einmal eine Hodentastuntersuchung beim Partner im Sinne einer Vorsorgeuntersuchung durchgeführt. Studenten, die schon von den Aufklärungskampagnen gehört hatten, hatten auch signifikant mehr Hodenuntersuchungen durchgeführt.
Schlussfolgerung
Die aktuellen Initiativen sind leider wenig bekannt. Wir konnten jedoch zeigen, dass über Aufklärungskampagnen zum Thema Hodenkrebs informierte junge Menschen ein gesteigertes Bewusstsein zur Hodentumorvorsorge haben.
