The Front Cover illustrates the hyperpolarization of bulk water in a recently established catalytic system. It is called NEPTUN (nuclear exchange polarization by transposing unattached nuclei) and is ...based on a novel non‐pairwise chemical exchange process between single p‐H2 protons and solvent molecules. More information can be found in the Communication by M. Emondts et al. on page 2614 in Issue 20, 2018 (DOI: 10.1002/cphc.201800521).
Hyperpolarization with parahydrogen (p‐H2) is a fast developing field in NMR, which enables overcoming the inherent low sensitivity of this important technique. The hyperpolarization of solvents, ...particularly of water, offers a wide range of applications for structural investigations of macromolecules and biomedical imaging. Until lately, only organic solvents could be polarized by means of parahydrogen via coherent redistribution of polarization (SABRE mechanism). In this study, we investigate in detail the mechanism of the recently reported bulk water hyperpolarization with a combination of theoretical and experimental methods, finally showing a chemical exchange pathway of single protons as basis for the enhancement. The prerequisites for preserving hyperpolarization upon separation of the two hydrogen atoms of p−H2 are demonstrated by theoretical examinations of the boundary conditions for the hyperpolarization experiments in accordance with the OneH−PHIP theory. These findings yielded the proposal of the novel NEPTUN mechanism (Nuclear Exchange Polarization by Transposing Unattached Nuclei) as the non‐hydrogenative equivalent to the established OneH−PHIP and thus the missing link in parahydrogen hyperpolarization theory.
The mechanism of the recently reported bulk water hyperpolarization is investigated. The authors find that polarization is transferred by the exchange of single protons between p‐H2 and water and call their new observation NEPTUN (Nuclear Exchange Polarization by Transposing Unattached Nuclei).
Among patients presenting with acute abdominal symptoms, patients with acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) constitute 0.09% - 0.2% of cases. Unfortunately, due to the short period between the first ...symptoms and irreversible ischemic changes in the intestine, the mortality rate in this group is high - up to 60% - 100%. We present a case of a 75-yearold female with severe comorbidities (ischemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, poorly controlled arterial hypertension, and a history of colorectal carcinoma previously treated with radio- and chemotherapy). The patient was admitted due to severe abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and celiac trunk embolism. Due to the relatively short time of symptoms onset as well as the soft abdomen, the patient was qualified for percutaneous treatment. Successful percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was performed with stent implantation to SMA and celiac trunk (Neptun C, Balton, Poland). As a result, the patency of both arteries was fully restored. The patient's condition improved within 24 hours, and she was discharged home.
When managing invasive fishes, permanent barriers may be best in preventing spread; however, they may not be feasible due to costs and logistical constraints. Alternatively, non-permanent barriers ...using electricity, light, sound, pressure, bubbles, CO2, and other stimuli are being developed and deployed in efforts to limit the spread of aquatic invasive species or to achieve fish guidance and conservation. However, the effectiveness of these barriers is quite variable and testing is often lacking for both target and non-target species. We conducted a series of laboratory trials to examine the effects of a vertical electric barrier on behaviour of common carp Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758). In response to the electric field, common carp reduced passing the electric barrier significantly, exhibiting different behaviours when interacting with the electric barrier, and spent more time away from the electric barrier when it was turned on during the stimulus period compared to pre- and post-stimulus periods. Our results suggest that a relatively weak electric gradient (i.e., voltage gradient: 0.2–0.4 V•cm-1, power density: 3–42 µW•cm-3) can inhibit the movement of common carp. Our results also highlight the importance of detailed examination of behavioural responses of target species when evaluating and considering fish-deterrent technologies.
In order to lower the risks associated to intensive pesticide use, efforts have been made at the European and the national level of several member countries of the European Union. In Germany, a ...national reduction programme for pesticides had been set up. The programme makes use of the methods elaborated in the context of the NEPTUN-project. The NEPTUN-approach had introduced several indicators to assess the intensity of pesticide use in agriculture. This approach was exemplarily applied to data from a case study region in north-eastern Germany. The aim of the paper is to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the presented approach as based on results gained in the chosen case study region.
