Liver abscesses containing hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae have emerged during the past 2 decades, originally in Southeast Asia and then worldwide. We hypothesized that hypervirulent K. ...pneumoniae might also be emerging in France. In a retrospective, monocentric, cohort study, we analyzed characteristics and outcomes for 199 consecutive patients in Paris, France, with liver abscesses during 2010-2015. We focused on 31 patients with abscesses containing K. pneumoniae. This bacterium was present in most (14/27, 52%) cryptogenic liver abscesses. Cryptogenic K. pneumoniae abscesses were more frequently community-acquired (p<0.00001) and monomicrobial (p = 0.008), less likely to involve cancer patients (p<0.01), and relapsed less often (p<0.01) than did noncryptogenic K. pneumoniae liver abscesses. K. pneumoniae isolates from cryptogenic abscesses belonged to either the K1 or K2 serotypes and had more virulence factors than noncryptogenic K. pneumoniae isolates. Hypervirulent K. pneumoniae are emerging as the main pathogen isolated from cryptogenic liver abscesses in the study area.

The presence of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 µm in diameter (PM2.5) in ambient air has a direct pejorative effect on human health. It is thus necessary to monitor the urban PM2.5 values with ...high spatial resolution to better evaluate the different exposure levels that the population encounters daily. The Pollutrack network of optical mobile particle counters on the roofs of hundreds of vehicles in Paris was used to produce maps with a 1 km2 resolution (108 squares to cover the Paris surface). The study was conducted during the 2018–2022 period, showing temporal variability due to different weather conditions. When averaging all the data, the highest air pollution was found along the Paris motorway ring. Also, the mean mass concentrations of PM2.5 pollution increased from southwest to northeast, due to the typology of the city, with the presence of canyon streets, and perhaps due to the production of secondary aerosols during the transport of airborne pollutants by the dominant winds. The number of days above the new daily threshold of 15 µg.m−3 recommended by the WHO in September 2021 varies from 3.5 to 7 months per year depending on the location in Paris. Pollutrack sensors also provide the number concentrations for particles greater than 0.5 µm. Using number concentrations of very fine particles instead of mass concentrations corresponding to the dry residue of PM2.5 is more representative of the pollutants citizens actually inhale. Some recommendations for the calibration of the sensors used to provide such number concentrations are given. Finally, the consequences of such pollution on human health are discussed.

The 2008 global financial meltdown has redirected attention to the entwinement of financial markets and the urban built environment. Against that background, recent works in urban political economy ...have focused on how city governments support the rent-maximisation strategies of landowners, thereby reinforcing 'the increasing tendency to treat land as a financial asset' (Harvey, 19822006). However, this perspective paradoxically understates the importance of market finance actors, neglecting to demonstrate how, in practice, such financial investors, who have been shown to adopt selective investment practices, shape urban redevelopment projects. In this article, the role of financial investors is analysed through a case study of a large-scale redevelopment project on the outskirts of the Paris city-region (city of Saint-Ouen). The analysis of negotiations over urban design and economic development issues – raised by property developers seeking to fashion commercial properties as investment assets – reveals the unevenness of a local authority's ability to implement an agenda that potentially diverges from the expectations of financial investors. Accordingly, given the growing importance of investors in the ownership of the built environment, the article considers urban redevelopment as the outcome of power relations that originate in the circulation of investors' expectations. These expectations are met through translating market finance categories (risk, return and liquidity) into elements of the urban fabric. This bears substantial consequences for policy-making, given the current context of austerity, as municipal authorities are increasingly constrained to rely on property markets. Urban redevelopment projects are thereby increasingly shaped to provide investment assets for financial investors.
