In this book a distinguished philosopher offers a comprehensive interpretation of Plato's most controversial dialogue. Treating theRepublicas a unity and focusing on the dramatic form as the ...presentation of the argument, Stanley Rosen challenges earlier analyses of theRepublic(including the ironic reading of Leo Strauss and his disciples) and argues that the key to understanding the dialogue is to grasp the author's intention in composing it, in particular whether Plato believed that the city constructed in theRepublicis possible and desirable.
Rosen demonstrates that the fundamental principles underlying the just city are theoretically attractive but that the attempt to enact them in practice leads to conceptual incoherence and political disaster. TheRepublic, says Rosen, is a vivid illustration of the irreconcilability of philosophy and political practice.
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche’s writing, which is distinguished by a wide variety of forms and ongoing beginnings, bears an unmistakable imprint of Plato’s writing-in-becoming. The work begins with the area of correspondence, primarily from the philologist Erwin Rohde’s recognition of Plato as a model for Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but also from Nietzsche’s testimony that his Zarathustra is platonizing, the work points to the motif of death as a place where Plato’s and Nietzsche’s poetics meet, given their transformations of the Homeric idea of the hero’s fate. The illuminating power of the atmosphere of death also points to Aesop’s character as a foundation upon which Plato bases his Socrates, which directs this paper toward demonstrating that Nietzsche’s assessment of Plato’s writing as an “infinitely accentuated Aesopian fable” turns out to be a self-assessment.
The aim of this paper is to review the most important ideas about utopias, analyze and compare their most important features that authors emphasize in their ideas, and at the end create a comparative scheme from the observed. We also want to consider what has remained of the idea of utopia today. The first chapter focuses on ancient utopias, primarily Plato as the originator of utopian thought. The next chapter follows the Renaissance authors who wrote about the ideal society, starting with Thomas More, the creator of the word utopia, Campanella's City of the Sun, and ending with Bacon's New Atlantis. Then follows the chapter on the ideas of social utopians Saint-Simone, Owen and Fourier. In the last chapter, some ideas of contemporary authors John Rawls and Rutger Bregman are considered. Finally, in the conclusion, a scheme is presented that shows the basic elements and most important features of the utopias of each of the considered authors, as well as their similarities and differences.
Human thinking is interpreted as strongly entrenched in a dialectical process between a primordial familiarity with things and breaks in this familiarity. This can be seen both retrospectively in ...Plato's ambivalent examination of literacy and prospectively in Derrida's différance. The consequences of a dissolution of that process are pointed out in the example of posthumanism.
