In this story, published in 2001-two years after the Alder Hey inquiry-the narrator tries to rescue her mother from the clutches of Dr Moses Hammacher, a general practitioner and county coroner in ...upstate New York, whom her mother has married even though he is much older than she. There is, of course, a forbidden room, which the protagonist enters at night, there to find shrunken heads and mummified hands that Dr Moses has brought back from his anthropological expeditions to remote parts of the world. ...on the shelves were mementos of his work, such as bottled abortions, the ropes with which people had been hanged (both judicially and suicidally), the trouser buttons of rapists, knives and bullets, bottles of poison used for murderous purposes, and so on.
The Civil War forced many southern women into the public sphere of war materiel production, factory labor, and hospital work, jobs that previously had been part of the male sphere. This article ...examines how Confederate newspaper editors framed such work for women and argues that the majority of southern editors not only recognized the necessity of women's moral, patriotic, and physical contributions to the war but frequently encouraged and applauded such actions. In an era of separate gender spheres, southern editors promoted women's war work as part of the existing southern and Confederate values of self-sufficiency, hard work, paternal devotion, and sacrifice for the new nation. Examining such press representations is important because Confederate editors played crucial roles in shaping public opinion during the war and in temporarily reconstructing gender roles during wartime. Some Poe scholars, including Meredith McGill and Terence Whalen, have minimized the significance and originality of Poe's aesthetic theories, focusing instead on the ways his work responded to market ...instabilities, the cultures of piracy and reprinting, and other contingencies of antebellum authorship, as a kind of corrective to the long-running (and mostly Continental) trend of viewing Poe as an aesthete and an "isolato" (to borrow Herman Melville's descriptor of himself and Hawthorne).8 Without contesting any of these historicizations, however, I'd like to suggest that Poe's most enduring and innovative responses to what Jonathan Elmer calls the "figure" of mass print culture are aesthetic ones-that is, responses that treat the aesthetic as a field for experimentation with the new circumstances of authorship in the antebellum United States.9 This essay argues that Poe's theory of interest-which he develops through a pattern of counterpoints to Kantian disinterest-constitutes one such significant structure of response to the bewildering state of aesthetic contemplation in mass culture.
When Frazer Clark and I were organizing the infrastructure of the Society back in 1974, we realized that we would need an efficient, dedicated treasurer of the group, and Frazer suggested Art Monke, ...head of the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, as not only a most capable over-seer of funds, but also a person who quite naturally would help maintain important ties between the Society per se and Bowdoin College where, of course, Hawthorne attended. Over the years, he was of an invaluable help to the Society, not only as "keeper of the coins," but in assisting Frazier and me with the challenging task of organizing Hawthorne Society meetings when they were held at Bowdoin College. When an issue was ready for distribution, Art took over and mailed it; he kept the mailing list updated and did a great job seeing that members received a copy.
The tradition of spoken-word recording began with Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph. Hence, this article makes the case that 1878 is a more important year to the history of literature than ...has yet been recognized for its experiments with verse and sound-recording technology. Although the tinfoil phonograph’s first decade has been well documented by media historians, literary critics have singled out 1888 as the noteworthy year since that is when Edison’s improved phonograph made it possible to record prominent figures including Alfred Tennyson and Robert Browning. Taking Edison’s original tinfoil phonograph as an alternative starting point reveals how the 1878 phonograph demonstrations, despite technological limitations, undertook acoustic experiments that enabled audiences to discern new forms of meaning, pleasure, and pathos in even the most well-known material. The recordings considered here include ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ as well as scripts by Tennyson, Caroline Norton, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, and others. Such recitals illustrate the extent to which Edison’s talking machine influenced the reception of texts while at the same time giving rise to performances unheard of in previous cultures.

The Gothic text has been shown to represent colonialism's crimes through its literary tropes ...of imprisonment, terror, rape, and tyranny. This essay takes a further step to propose that Gothic texts also register the historical resistance to colonialism's crimes. That is, they refer to anti-colonial insurgency—in Ireland, India, the Caribbean, and elsewhere—in the process evincing ambivalent anxieties about global, imperial instability. After reviewing the Gothic‘s entanglement with discourses of both liberation and barbarism, reflective of its contradictory political investments, the essay focuses on Charles Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer (1820) to demonstrate the ways in which Gothic texts are structured against insurgency even as, in their “wandering,” haunted figures, they unveil a world in turmoil.

The narrator’s horror and anger at seeing and hearing about Percival’s fate at the hands of a surgeon reveals a twofold anxiety about the medical profession: first, that surgical procedures, while preserving human life, can dehumanize patients; and second, that medical practitioners are too often driven by personal gain rather than by patient well-being. ...advances included the development of more precise surgical blades as a result of using crucible steel, which was produced for the first time in the 1740s; the introduction of James Syme’s new method of below-knee amputation in 1842;1 the introductions of ether and then chloroform as anaesthesia in 1846 and 1847; Joseph Lister’s advocacy of phenol-based prophylactic antisepsis in the late 1860s; and the emergence of surgical heat sterilization in France and Germany between 1883 and 1893.2 These advances, this story suggests, provided surgeons with the power to save the lives of those left in the most dire of physical conditions, but not without potentially compromising the very humanity of such patients.

Drew provides a historical background of Southern Indians. Among other things, she reveals that for generations Southern Indians encouraged their daughters to marry British and Scots traders who ...settled on their lands. These Anglo-Indian Christian marriages produced large, prosperous clans with names like McDonald, Ross, Hicks, McGillivray, Lowrey, Brown, McIntosh, Harkin, and LeFlore. These clans formed an English-speaking social elite, and with Christianization and "civilization" to the plow and loom American policy, Southern Indians were eager for schools. From 1800 until the late 1830s their lands comprised the main operating theater for America's Great Awakening missionary movement.
