AirGIS, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based air pollution and human exposure modelling system, is routinely used in conjunction with the Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM®), across ...the globe, to assess local- or street-scale air pollution. We developed a substantially revised version of AirGIS (hereafter, new AirGIS) as a new modelling system in open-source GIS i.e. PostgreSQL software with its spatial extension PostGIS to (1) optimize the model performance enabling model calculations for a large number of sites over a large geographical area, with limited computing resources (2) replace the outdated programming language Avenue (3) become independent of commercial GIS software. This paper, therefore, aims to describe the overall structure of new AirGIS modelling system together with its strengths and limitations. Furthermore, the new AirGIS has been evaluated against various measured datasets of ambient air pollution (NOx, NO2, PM10 and PM2.5). In terms of reproducing temporal variation (single location, time series of concentrations e.g. annual, daily etc.) of air pollution, the new model achieved correlations (R) in the range 0.45–0.96. While, in terms of reproducing the spatial variation (several locations, single time interval), the new AirGIS achieved correlations in the range 0.32–0.92. The new model, therefore, can be used for both short- and long-term air pollution exposure assessments to facilitate health related studies. However, the present evaluation of the new modelling system also revealed that the new AirGIS significantly overestimated the observed concentrations for two out of four datasets. The possible reasons for these errors and future directions to reducing the bias in the new model output have been discussed.
•Development of an updated version of AirGIS air pollution and human exposure modelling system.•Overview of the new system's architecture and workflow.•Evaluation of the new model system against various measurements datasets.•Overview of the new system's strengths, limitations and future outlook.

Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) are collision avoidance devices used on-board both commercial and leisure craft. These systems report the position, track and speed of the vessel through Very ...High Frequency radio transmissions which are accessible to any suitable receiver. This paper explores the potential to use AIS data to inform small scale fisheries management and marine spatial planning. First, the propagation and reception of the line of sight AIS transmissions was modelled around the coast of Scotland to identify areas where the use of AIS may be compromised. Using open source Geographic Information System and relational database software, computationally efficient methods of processing and analysing AIS data were explored. Three months of AIS data derived from 274 Scottish small scale fishing vessels were used to provide spatio-temporal analyses of trip duration and distance travelled, location of fishing activities, and vessel dependency on fishing grounds. The coverage, opportunities and challenges of using AIS are discussed together with broader applications and future developments.
•Model predicts AIS data reception in the majority of Scottish coastal waters.•Open source software provides a useful and effective platform for AIS data analyses.•AIS data facilitates incorporation of small scale fisheries into spatial planning.•AIS data useful to characterise fishing trips and most important fishing grounds.•Important limitations of using AIS data for regulatory purposes identified.

Geospatial technologies provide crucial tools for territory planning and management, such as the Multifunctional Territorial Cadastre (MTC). In this context, the objective of this study is to propose a low-cost MTC methodology using open-source software to aid decision-making and cadastral updates through a web application. The proposed methodology was tested in the Vale Vêneto District, São João do Polêsine, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Two fieldwork campaigns were conducted to gather aerophotogrammetric and cadastral data in the study area. Static and interactive maps were created for spatial representation of cadastral data, along with a web interface for practical data editing and updates. The suggested methodology enables the implementation of MTC in municipalities with budget constraints, promoting territorial knowledge acquisition and streamlining decision-making processes through the use of open-source software across various sectors of public organizations.

Floodplains provide ecosystem services (ES). Their evaluation is complex and integrative assessment remains challenging for sciences and practices. Studies have been published in the last two decades ...reporting ES monetary values of floodplains. Since ES are site-specific, we focus on those studies regarding the Europe's second largest river basin, namely the Danube River Basin (DRB). By analyzing these studies, we aim to answer the questions: “Do the significant predictor variables differ from previous meta-analyses?” and “Does the spatial database improve the meta-analysis?” In this context, we conducted a systematic review on Scopus and Web of Science combining the four themes “value”, “ES”, “floodplain”, and “location”. We conducted a meta-analysis of the Danube floodplains' ES values with different sub-groups based on the ES classes (provisioning, regulating, and cultural) and implemented model selection based on the corrected Akaike Information Criterion. We selected 251 entries from 25 studies to set up with a PostgreSQL spatial database, which provides limitless possibilities to enrich the information on the study areas. We observed that the most important variables to describe ES values of DRB floodplains depend on the ES class, but in general the area proportions of water bodies and riparian landscapes are important, together with the valuation method and the chemical or ecological status of the corresponding river section. Finally, we provided two versions of unconditional benefit-transfer functions to evaluate provisioning, regulating, and cultural ES. This paper complements previously conducted meta-analyses to recognize significant characteristics to value ES and it is a valid basis to help determine the ES value of Danube floodplains.
