Much prior work illuminates how fans of a brand can contribute to the value enjoyed by other members of its audience, but little is known about any processes by which fans contribute to the ...dissipation of that audience. Using longitudinal data on America’s Next Top Model, a serial brand, and conceptualizing brands as assemblages of heterogeneous components, this article examines how fans can contribute to the destabilization of a brand’s identity and fuel the dissipation of audiences of which they have been members. This work suggests that explanations focusing on satiation, psychology, or semiotics are inadequate to account for dissipation in the audience for serial brands. Moreover, the perspective advanced here highlights how fans can create doppelgänger brand images and contribute to the co-destruction of serial brands they have avidly followed.
Abstract This study examined topic initiation in first encounters in an underexplored language pair – Korean and Chinese. It focused on the beginning stage of intimate relationships documented on two ...reality dating shows, Sun Da Bang in South Korea and Find Me The One in mainland China. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to compare the focus of topics, the shift between them, and the influence of gender. Significant differences were found in topic orientation across the groups and in the effect of gender on topic initiation in Korean.
The study sought to test the efficacy of TV reality shows like Big Brother Naija in disseminating agricultural information to youths to influence their intention to engage in agriculture. A ...quasi-experimental research design was used to carry out this study, while a structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The result showed that youths exposed to TV reality show content with agricultural messages embedded in them reported more intention to engage in agriculture than those who were not. A follow-up evaluation after 12 months revealed that the improvement was consistent.

This paper proposes to study TV serials as instances of a nationally sanctioned fantasy of the family. They set out, in an exaggerated mode, everyday problems encountered in families and thus allow ...viewers to negotiate between their own realities and the norm and follow the resolution offered by the serials to issues of family and desire. The concept of fantasy, it is argued, is useful in looking at affective cultural products such as melodramatic TV serials since they deal with the nature of attachment to others and the acceptability or not of desire. The paper compares TV plots with those that reality shows deal with, indicating the extent to which these plots are similar to one another. In both cases, the notion of fantasy allows us to see the relationship between desire and the transgression of a norm, as well as the violence that accompanies these transgressions.
This study used cultivation theory to explore the relationship between exposure to reality television shows and college students' beliefs about wealth and materialism. In addition, this study ...suggested parasocial experiences with reality show casts via social media as a mediating variable explaining the cultivation effects of reality shows. The survey results from 178 college students indicated a significant relationship between reality show exposure and beliefs about wealth and materialism. Also, the parasocial relationship developed with reality show casts had significant mediating impact. Findings contribute to the application of cultivation theory in explaining the effects of reality television show viewing in the new media environment.
This study engages in feminist media scholarship, analyzing post-millennial Chinese reality shows that center on motherhood against the social backdrop of the termination of the one-child policy and ...an aging population. These popular shows, exemplified by Supermom, claim to garner respect and social attention for all mothers and potential mothers by spotlighting celebrity mothers' unpaid sacrifices and hard work in performing their maternal duties. Through the lens of critical discourse analysis, this paper focuses on Supermom's selection of celebrity mothers; the construction of a female voice via confessional-style interviews, motion graphics, voice-overs, and monologues, as well as the male presence established through interviews with the subjects' husbands and disembodied male voice-overs. This study argues that Supermom fuels the cultural perception of mandatory motherhood in China by promoting and portraying childbearing and childrearing as the means of fulfillment for women. These motherhood-themed reality shows offer a window through which we can glimpse the various ways television is complicit in defining women's socially acceptable life choices and shaping post-socialist concepts of motherhood and the female reproductive body.
