In The Drama of Reality Television: Lives of Youth in Liquid Modern Times, Danielle Ligocki shares the personal accounts of seven young people whose lives are being shaped by both reality television ...and the liquid modern time we are living in today.
The global financial crisis of 2008 marked the death of Ireland's Celtic Tiger and reflected an era marred by institutional greed and scandal. When Benedict Anderson declared the nation an "imagined ...political community," he recognized that the nation is narrated into existence through cultural products, especially media. Newspaper and corresponding Internet headlines from Ireland's leading news outlets with the words "ghost estate" and their haunting effects convey the significant cultural impact of that phenomenon and the pervasiveness of the haunted house metaphor in relation to the 2008 global financial crisis. In Profit and Loss, Belfast poet Leontia Flynn engages the gothic rhetoric that became ubiquitous after the collapse of the Celtic Tiger. With its strong economic and cultural ties to the Republic, Northern Ireland was not immune to the economic contagion spreading across the globe. In order to validate personal narratives that function as a redress to problematic institutional identities, Flynn's collection contains gothic tropes used, as in the Gothic tradition, to critique arbitrary authority and power structures.
The American basic cable channel HGTV became the object of public scorn after the housing market became associated with the current and ongoing global financial crisis. While noting the ways in which ...this channel’s programming has been complicit in the financialization of home ownership and the effacement of risk that continue to transform “dwelling” into “home” into “investment,” this article takes the occasion of enmity foisted on HGTV as an opportunity to more broadly consider the complex role of representation—or in the language of these programs, the role of “staging” —in and as part of the economic crisis. The links between complex and often abstract forms of financial speculation and the ideology of home ownership are not as direct as they were portrayed in the aftermath of the crisis. The staging of real estate in HGTV’s programming and the staging of economic practices offer two simultaneous and parallel, but distinct, practices of representation. Just as recently developing approaches to conducting the ethnography of financial markets have begun to suggest new ways of thinking about the work done in and by the economy, grounded in material practices, so too do we need to take seriously the complexity of the work done by textual representation in our understanding of political economies. Yes, through crisis we found that these practices are linked, but not directly or causally. HGTV programming does not offer confirmation or reification of the link between representational games of financial speculation and those of home owners. It is not the site of culture that has led to economic crisis, but rather a telling site of the culture of crisis.
Islamic reality shows started in Malaysia with Imam Muda, produced in 2010 by Astro Oasis. Since then, other television stations in Malaysia have also adopted this format. Using uses and ...gratification as a theoretical framework, a major focus of this paper was to examine the effects of Islamic reality shows on its audience, specifically on the parasocial relationships formed between Twitter users and their favorite Islamic reality show personality. It was predicted that active social media users would be more inclined to watch Islamic reality shows because of specific Twitter habits related to the show, and level of religiosity. A survey was conducted among students taking introductory Human Sciences and Islamic Revealed Knowledge subjects from the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). Among others, evidence from this research suggests that being relatable to viewers is important for mediated characters. Specifically, the level of parasocial interaction was found to significantly influence motivation to use Twitter, and intention to watch Islamic reality shows in the future, because of their Twitter use. However, religiosity did not influence intention to watch Islamic reality shows. The implications of these findings on the role of parasocial interaction, and the effects of social media on television viewing were discussed in this paper.
The film shows the two women, who are the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, sunbathing, sorting through family pictures, eating ice cream in bed, and performing song and dance numbers, ...even as their house crumbles around them and cats walk, scratch, eat, and sleep on every surface. In 2006, David Maysles contributed to the renewed cultural interest in the Beales by releasing outtakes from the original film under the title The Beales of Gray Gardens (released on DVD in 2001 by Criterion along with the original documentary as part of a two-disc set).
Each fall the author assigns undergraduate teacher education students to design rubrics that they can use to evaluate auditions for reality television shows like "American Idol." The point is to draw ...students into a critical reflection on assessment literature and practices they have been studying. Through these reflections, the author has identified six lessons 'American Idol' teaches us about writing assessment: (1) The importance of multiple performances; (2) There is no proxy for expert knowledge; (3) Clearly define the construct being measured; (4) Consistency is best achieved through dialogue; (5) Real audiences matter; and (6) Attend to consequences.
