Poet, thinker, and politician Leopold Sedar Senghor is best known as one of the founders of the Negritude movement and as the first president of his native Senegal at its independence in 1960. He ...sees critical standards of African art as originating from the nature of the black soul, and the black soul as originating from the environment that gave it life. These standards, long unknown to the white world and now exerting influence in contemporary art, will henceforth play a more integral role in the art world.
Among the tributes honoring the memory of Djibril Tamsir Niane, this piece surrenders the tempting inclination to discuss some aspect of his scholarly work in favor of a few observations based on my ...personal experiences in the company of both Niane and his wife. these few brief episodes from a long life colored by historical events and notable people were mostly framed by politically generated circumstances that partly defined Niane's existence. As a charismatic representative of dramatic times in postindependence Guinea, Niane's persona was shaped by determined intellectual pursuit in defiance of tyrannical government persecution, and the ability to recognize and embrace serendipitous opportunities. The writer's personal experiences are framed here in the context of efforts to preserve the D. T. Niane research tape archive. L'article présente la correspondance inédite de Léopold Senghor avec l'africaniste soviétique Ivan Potekhine et le poète Evguéni Evtouchenko. Cette correspondance et les autres documents cités ...éclairent les relations peu connues entre le secrétaire de la Société africaine de culture, Alioune Diop, le président Senghor et l'URSS, qui commencèrent avec le Festival de la jeunesse de Moscou en 1957 et se poursuivirent jusqu'au Festival mondial des arts nègres de Dakar en 1966. Par-delà la méfiance vis-à-vis de Moscou et le conflit entre négritude et socialisme soviétique, les documents illustrent la fascination de Senghor pour Evtouchenko et sa conviction que « les peuples slaves et les peuples noirs » partageaient la sensibilité et la tendresse, malgré les souffrances qu'ils avaient éprouvées, sous-entendu par le colonialisme et le stalinisme.

The constitutive creative matrix of a nomadic desert environment, refracted by orality, Islam and Arab culture, as well as common social concerns regarding the relationship between the truths of story and the political mononarratives of postcolonial tyrannies joins these writers into an alliance forged by similar alembics of personal formation, literary styles and social considerations. Given the focus on women in his work and his politics, why has Farah not been drawn into the center of current debates in African feminism and/or womanism, drawing his work into a sustained conversation with that of Flora Nwapa, Buchi Emecheta, Ama Ata Aidoo, Mariama Bâ, and Bessie Head-a writer whose preoccupations and modes of writing could not be more similar to those of Farah?

Cet article s’interroge autant sur les ensembles ...statutaires dans l’epace public dakarois que sur l’idée même de « renaissance » en historicisant ce concept à partir d’une relecture de textes de Léopold Sédar Senghor et de Cheikh Anta Diop, il s’agit d’en montrer les évolutions radicales que ce terme a subi lorsqu’il était utilisé par Abdoulaye Wade à la fin des années 2000.
