Mr Anthony Spiri's program originally appeared in 2007 and included three works later argued to be by WF Bach's contemporary Johann Wilhelm Hässler. Realizing his error, Spiri proposed reissuing the ...disc and substituting other Bach works for the I lässler ones. Mr Barker wrote a fine review of the original release (Nov/Dec 2007), expressing his preference for the harpsichord in this repertory.

In a varied program including Romances sans Paroles, Barcarolles, Preludes, and the solo piano version of the beautiful Ballade, Anthony Spiri complements Pascal Rogé's outstanding one-disc recital, ...since there is only one duplication.
Who was Eduard Marxen (1806-87)? For 10 years beginning in 1843 he taught piano and composition to Johannes Brahms in Hamburg. Although highly respected in his lifetime, he is otherwise largely ...forgotten. Even until 1887 he often communicated with Brahms, who asked for criticisms of his recent compositions, which Marxen gladly supplied.
It is strange how one reacts to a new release. My feelings about this one were quite negative owing to the ugly miniature dog that is on the front, inside, and back of the jewel box as well as on the ...label. Yet when I began playing the disc it seemed to be well played and certainly well recorded.

This music will be new to most listeners in the US, and it is well worth hearing. The program includes eight songs by Benjamin Ip avec (1829-1908), six by Lucijan Marija Skerjanc (1900-73), and one ...or more by Anton Lajovic, Alojzij Gerzinic, Jo sip Pavcic, Zorko Prelovec, Kamilo Masek, Fran Gerbic, Davorin Jenko, and Emil Adamic. The style and tonal language of these songs are reminiscent in some cases of Wolf (e.g. Skerjanc's 'Vision'), in others of Dvorak (e.g.

This is a good cross-section of Joseph Marx's songs. The program includes much of the Italian Songbook (1912) as well as the entire cycle Transfigured Year (1932). The music combines coherent form ...with the occasional tone-painting needed to heighten its expression. Marx's musical language grows out of Wolf and Richard Strauss, with some whole-tone phrases and harmonies suggesting Debussy. The piano writing both supports and expands on the texts, as in 'The Dead Bride'.

This was originally recorded back in 1991 and 1992 in Japan. That is not a complaint. The sound is good. So are the players, though Ko Iwasaki seems so serious in tone that the music lacks poetry ...sometimes. But I'm prejudiced against arrangements of the Opus 78 Violin Sonata for cello.
