Performance of electrical distribution utilities depends on substations which are serving the end consumers. Consumer demands are mainly focused on the uninterrupted supply of quality power at low ...cost. These requirements are met by the effective and efficient operation of substations. Substations adopt various asset management strategies and effective maintenance management techniques to improve their overall performance to meet the utility level customer related targets. Focused index to measure the effectiveness these measures are required for performance monitoring and improvements. In the literature reliability based indices are proposed to measure the substation performance. These indices even though provide some insight to the overall substation condition, but do not provide the overall performance centric index depicting the operational (maintenance) effectiveness and efficiency of a substation. In this paper a new performance index called as Overall Substation Effectiveness (OSE) based on Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is presented for measuring the substation performance. OSE will provide such a data which enables the organizations to identify the opportunities for improvement in the process.
The global production companies of today are exposed to increasingly stronger pressure to implement new technologies, improve quality and decrease production costs. All this is related to ensuring a ...proper technical condition of machines and devices. This article presents the results of an analysis of the impact of implementation of TPM at the rolling mill on work safety. The number of near misses and accidents was used as a measure of the safety level.
Maintenance is a vital function in manufacturing systems for maintaining quality. During the coming period two ideas are evolved Total Productive Maintenance and Total Quality Management ...simultaneously with other facts to attain excellence in production systems. Various feature of putting into practice Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is expressed and examined in this study. Total productive maintenance is explained thoroughly, the philosophy, planning, improvements, goal setting and developments of implementation plans. The eight pillars of TPM are explained. Various aspect of implementation of TPM is elaborated. Also the benefits of TPM are explained.
•A diagram of the formation of condensable particulate matter (CPM) is created.•Method for measuring CPM and its improvements are systematically introduced.•Three factors that cause inaccuracies of ...CPM measurement are summarized.•Characteristics of condensable particulate matter are analyzed comprehensively.•This study proposes two recommended measures to control the emission of CPM.
Particulate matter emitted by fuel combustion has become a major air pollutant. It comes in the form of filterable particulate matter (FPM) and condensable particulate matter (CPM). In the past, people focused on FPM due to its large emission amount. Such active research prompted the rapid development of FPM control technology. At present, FPM is effectively controlled, and its emission concentration is extremely low. By contrast, the emission concentration of CPM is higher than that of FPM and requires immediate attention. Therefore, people are paying close attention to CPM. Nevertheless, CPM is still poorly understood. On the basis of existing research, this study reviews CPM, including its concept, formation mechanism, and hazards. CPM test methods and the factors that affect the accuracy of CPM measurement are also discussed. Improvement methods focusing on CPM measurement are introduced. The results of previous research on CPM characteristics are summarized. Finally, possible CPM control techniques are discussed.
Total Productive Maintenance—TPM is widely being used in industries for manufacturing excellence. TPM is based on its eight pillars. Successful Implementation of TPM from its kick-off to final stage ...depends on in-depth knowledge of these pillars. The purpose of the paper is to rank eight pillars of TPM according to their importance with respect to four parameters: Productivity, Cost, Quality and Delivery in Time, by using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) a multiple criteria decision-making methodology. A pairwise comparison of TPM pillars is done by use of AHP method, by considering a case of automotive industries in India. Ranking of TPM pillars is proposed to set guidelines to decide the weightage of each pillar in terms of major factors to improve Overall Equipment Efficiency. This in terms will guide management to give proper preference and allocate fund at proper time to proper pillar. The ranking suggested suites for automotive sector and assembly lines. By varying the judgmental rating the new ranking can be obtained from the suggested guidelines on similar basis.
Evidence suggests that lean methods and tools have helped manufacturing organisations to improve their operations and processes. However, the real effect of these methods and tools on contemporary ...measures of operational performance, i.e. cost, speed, dependability, quality and flexibility, is still unclear. This paper investigates the impact of five essential lean methods, i.e. JIT, autonomation, kaizen, total productive maintenance (TPM) and value stream mapping (VSM), on these measures. A linear regression analysis modelled the correlation and impact of these lean practices on the operational performance of 140 manufacturing organisations around the world. In addition, structural equation modelling (SME) was used to cross verify the findings of the regression and correlation analyses. The results indicate that JIT and automation have the strongest significance on operational performance while kaizen, TPM and VSM seem to have a lesser, or even negative, effect on it. This paper provides further evidence regarding the effects that lean practices have on the performance of organisations and thus the research offers companies, and their managers, a better understanding of the relationship between the lean strategy and the performance of their operations.
