Palavras-chave: Informação e Tecnologia; Pós-custodial; Web Colaborativa; The National Archives.Abstract The use of new information and communication technologies (ICT) introduces innovations to the contemporary infocommunicative process, which while stress the importance of Information Science studies, present major challenges to the area, as they allow for the collaborative construction of content and knowledge on the net. In this scenario, the reorganization of structures and new informational behaviors, Post-custodial paradigm emerges proposing to the institutions of Archives an original way to create, store and disseminate information, facilitating access to their documents. Thus, through a bibliographic research, this study brings theoretical concepts on the new paradigm and follows with a case study of the "The National Archives" from the UK. From the exploration of the website, we identify and portray characteristics that present, in accordance with the assumptions of post-custodial, especially with regard to the provision of online access to digitized documents to users. It is noticed that the consequent opening of Archives and documents to the digital environment brings a significant gain of visibility to archival institutions, expands its sphere of action, approaches to the public and invigorates on its post-custodial form. Keywords: Information & Technology; Post-custodial; Collaborative Web; The National Archives.
This article presents for the first time an examination of the Special Operations Executive's (SOE) UK-based communication facilities. Established in 1940, SOE was responsible for coordinating all ...acts of sabotage against the enemy overseas. This was only possible with the aid of a reliable communications link with the Resistance. By examining SOE's Home Stations, this article will demonstrate the value the organization placed in reliable wireless communications.
In the 1950s, the Ministry of Health, supported by interested groups outside government, recognised the political importance of productive efficiency. For leadership, organisational models and ...techniques the Ministry looked to the movement for industrial productivity. The NHS was receptive, but private-sector approaches were modified and dampened as they were imported. NHS management was to be the provider of technical expertise, but the deployment of this expertise was limited by clinical autonomy and de-coupling from financial incentives. This article casts new light on the history of productivity policy, NHS management and the moving frontier between state and civil society.
Until recently, the most important investigation on the issues of the "comfort women" was carried out by the Japanese government in the early 1990s. In the meantime, data from the Government-General ...of Korea (1910-1945) were never comprehensively investigated. As for the comfort women-related data from occupied China, even access to these has been difficult. To overcome this situation, a group of researchers that included us, recently formed a research team and began investigating data at the National Archives of Korea, the Shanghai Municipal Archives and Nanjing Municipal Archives, in China. This paper analyzes the significance of the new findings we made at these archives. Compared to the documents found by the Japanese investigation in the 1990s, our findings, in China in particular, give much more detailed information about the wartime recruitment and operation of "comfort women" and the military comfort stations.
New data, recently discovered by the author, on the hoard of 15-16th-century silver coins previously little known to the scientific community, which had been found in the territory of the Kazan ...Kremlin in 1909, are published. Pesidential libraries need stronger coordination and leadership from the National Archives, better oversight by the Congress, and more informed and vigorous monitoring by the public and by the public ...history community. This is true not only for access to documents and services to researchers, but also, and perhaps especially now, for the “museum side” of the libraries, including exhibits and public and educational programs. The increasing reliance on funds from various library partner foundations to support programs aimed at the public is a worrisome trend. Although they have supported many worthy programs in the libraries, these “hidden hand” partners greatly reduce the transparency of the operation of the libraries which are, after all, public institutions still chiefly supported by American taxpayers. This article examines selected issues where better policy and practice would improve the programs and operations of the presidential libraries.
