Because of the unusual environmental attributes of tourism activities, how to effectively inform and remind tourists of the risk information of tourism destinations is of great significance to guide tourists' safety compliance behavior, which is critical in preventing safety accidents for destinations. Using emotion appraisal theory, framing effect theory, and identity theory, this study designs three experiments to explore the main effect of safety reminder information frame (gain-type vs. loss-type) on safety compliance behavior, the mediating effect of tourists' empathy, and the moderating effect of family identity by treating safety reminder information as stimulus material. We found that as compared with gain-type, loss-type safety reminder information frame is more effective in encouraging safety compliance behavior among tourists. Second, tourists' empathy serves as an important mediator between safety reminder information and safety compliance behavior. Third, this study not only finds that the impact of tourists' empathy on safety compliance behavior is greater for tourists with a stronger family identity but also that family identity does matter in the impact of tourism destination safety reminder on tourists’ empathy. To summarize, loss-type safety reminder information frames are more effective in activating tourists' empathy, thereby boosting safety compliance behavior among tourists with stronger family identity. In terms of the primary driver of safety compliance behavior, it is recommended that the destination adopt the loss-type frame to edit and publish the safety reminder information to induce safety compliance behavior. These findings have significant implications for the formulation and enforcement of safety reminders in tourist destinations.
This paper aims to identify possibilities for paranormal tourism development in Serbia and to determine domestic tourists’ interest in participating in paranormal tourism. Paranormal places and ...bizarre rituals have been defined as potential paranormal tourism localities and events. Paranormal tourism is one of the new forms of special interest tourism. It is evident that paranormal tourism is a result of the expansion of other related types of tourism, such as dark tourism, ghost tourism, spiritual tourism, cultural tourism, ethnological tourism, new age tourism and pilgrimage tourism. It is defined by tourists’ interest in topics which challenge realist ontologies and representational epistemologies. The present study examines responses from 405 Serbia residents (potential tourists). After using descriptive statistics, Independent Samples T-Test and ANOVA, the study finds that potential tourists are interested in visiting certain paranormal places, and there is a possibility to develop this type of tourism in Serbia. The current work is the first study of paranormal tourism in Serbia and one of the few studies in the world.
PurposeWith a focus on tourists' dining experiences, this study aimed to identify food neophobic tendencies and dining attributes that affect dining satisfaction and to compare these factors between ...two nationality groups – Chinese and Japanese.Design/methodology/approachFrom a paper-based survey, 380 usable responses were collected from inbound Chinese and Japanese tourists at an international airport in Korea. Bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses were employed.FindingsChinese tourists' level of dining satisfaction was related to their food neophobic tendencies as well as to the food, environment and service quality. Japanese tourists perceived quality of food and service only as important, and environment quality and food neophobic tendencies were not related to their dining satisfaction.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this cross-cultural study can be used to improve understanding of international tourists' perceptions and food-related personality traits and have implications for increasing favorable attitudes toward local food at tourist destinations. Destination marketing organizations and local restaurateurs can use the results to develop marketing strategies tailored to each tourist segment.Originality/valueSuccessful marketing strategies for promoting a tourist destination must consider how tourists view the local food as an aspect of the destination attraction. Many studies have considered all Asians as a single homogeneous entity, specifically in comparison with Westerners. This study attempted to debunk the myth of homogeneity by comparing two Asian countries, which may differ in regard to their dining satisfaction.
Gunung Kemukus which is located in Sragen, Central Java, Indonesia, is one of the famous tourist destinations for pilgrims. This place is considered sacred and also attracts tourists to come. The ...uniqueness lies in the existence of the tomb of Pangeran Samudera, who was a figure of a religious propagator of Majapahit descent and a student of Sunan Kalijaga. In addition, pilgrimage is also a form of Javanese Islamic asceticism that has taken root and become part of the culture of the community. As many pilgrims visit, it has an impact on tourism behavior that destroys both the environment and cultural rites. It can be seen through karaoke houses, rented booths for sex, and environmental pollution. Through a narrative review, this article found that the Javanese Islamic ascetic values believed by the people of Gunung Kemukus could be an effort to preserve the environment and rituals in Gunung Kemukus.
Pakistan holds an important geographical status, but extremism and sabotage have severely damaged the tourism industry. In the present study, we examined the impact of destination image (DI) on ...tourist loyalty (TL) and intension to visit (IV) in Pakistan. Additionally, the study analyzed the mediation effects of electronic word of mouth (eWOM) and tourist satisfaction (TS) on these relationships. Data was collected from 780 tourists in Pakistan. We used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) to obtain the results. Our results demonstrated the positive relationships among DI, eWOM, TS, TL, and IV. This study also disclosed that eWOM has a partial mediation effect on the DI–TL relationship, and both eWOM and TS fully mediate the association between DI and IV. Hence, tourist satisfaction can be enhanced by eWOM and destination image, which directly effect tourist loyalty and intention to visit in Pakistan. The proposed framework and research findings will help stakeholders significantly to recognize the multi-facet association in the tourism industry of Pakistan. Testing the above relationships through multiple mediators is a relatively novel idea.
Tourists' pro-environment behavior (TPEB) plays a central role in fostering a destination's sustainability. As an essential connection between tourist and destination, destination psychological ...ownership (DPO) has been found to exert a direct effect on TPEB. Still, a more profound underlying psychological mechanism behind this relationship remains unclear. This study proposed a moderated mediation model to investigate the ways in which DPO influences TPEB by addressing the mediating role of ascribed responsibility and the moderating role of perceived effectiveness. Data collected from 419 tourists at three national tourist resorts in China, through an on-site intercept survey, were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and the bootstrap approach. The results indicated that DPO positively impacts TPEB, and ascribed responsibility partially mediates such effect. Furthermore, perceived effectiveness moderates the direct impacts of DPO and ascribed responsibility on TPEB, as well as the indirect effects of DPO on TPEB through ascribed responsibility. The proposed model extends the existing literature by exploring the mediating mechanism of how DPO affects TPEB and the potential boundary condition. Meanwhile, the findings illuminate implications for tourism management to advocate TPEB effectively.

Abstract
Lake Toba area is one of the priorities for developing tourist destinations in Indonesia. As a strategic national tourism area, it is necessary to identify aspects of the tourism area ...development that are not yet optimal to increase the number of tourist visits to that location. This study aims to assess the cleanliness of tourist sites in Lake Toba based on the assessment of tourism site stakeholders, namely visitors, local businesses, and cleanliness managers. The tourist sites in Lake Toba studied were Pasir Putih and Bukit Holbung. This study found that Pasir Putih and Bukit Holbung were considered dirty, with a cleanliness index of 2.63 and 2.60. The assessment shows that access to the cleaning facilities in the two tourist sites is difficult to reach. However, regarding the completeness of the cleaning facilities, Pasir Putih is considered better with an average index of 2.94 compared to the cleaning facilities in Bukit Holbung, which are considered inadequate with an average index of 2.43. The number of tourists visiting a tourist site is directly proportional to the waste generated, and the habits of tourists who visit also affect the cleanliness of a tourist site.
The growing demand for outdoor adventure tourism activities, and the rapid growth in associated industry supply, means we need an improved understanding of outdoor adventure tourists. The paper ...considers the characteristics and motives of outdoor adventure tourists, as well as the influence of experience, age and gender on their motives. This is based, firstly, on a critical review of the relatively much more extensive literature on outdoor adventure activity participants for insights into the character and motives of outdoor adventure tourists. The paper also focuses, secondly, on an original case study of mountaineer tourists in Chamonix, France. Results from the case study of mountaineer tourists are evaluated against the research themes and gaps identified from the review of literature on outdoor adventure activity participants, including outdoor adventure tourists. It is shown how outdoor adventure tourists are a diverse group. Motivational similarities and differences exist between these tourists and their outdoor recreational counterparts. Experience, age and gender influence the motives and motivational differences among outdoor adventure activity participants. It is noted that there is considerable scope for further research on outdoor adventure tourists, including mountaineer tourists, and potential new research directions are identified for the specific themes examined in the paper.
