Du 4 avril au 26 août, Gounod écrit quasi chaque jour à la cantatrice alors en tournée en Allemagne et en Angleterre, ces missives étant pour une part le journal de la composition de son premier opéra, Sapho. A partir du 29 avril, Gounod séjourne dans la propriété des Viardot, à Courtavenel dans la Brie, où il est invité avec sa mère pour se remettre du décès brutal de son frère ainé.
