With the introduction of the IFLA Library Reference Model (IFLA LRM), authority control is becoming increasingly important, as authority data will play a key role in the network of linked data. ...Therefore, the preparation of authority data will help to facilitate the implementation of IFLA LRM and will be useful in the transition to RDA (Resource Description and Access).
The paper presents an overview of authority data in the COBISS system, with a focus on the Slovenian COBISS.SI system, and suggests possibilities for the future development of authority records. It presents the status of the authority databases CONOR.SI and SGC, the submission of authority records to the VIAF service, and the acquisition and use of identifiers for personal and corporate body names. It also outlines IZUM’s plans for the transition to a new catalogue that will be in line with the IFLA LRM conceptual model. The basis for the development of the new COBISS catalogue is the selection of as large a set of entities as possible to be realised in authority records and the establishment of relationships between them.
The article presents the results of the qualitative and quantitative analysis of SBN authority records for personal names, by the comparison of two datasets, the former based on data sent to VIAF in ...2021 (PRE) and the latter on data taken from the SBN OPAC shortly after the publication of Alphabetica, the new ICCU portal (POST). The aim of the study was to establish whether the quality of the authority records actually corresponds to the requirements specified by SBN for the entries of level 90 and above. In addition, the study aimed to verify whether the system of production and publication of authority records, based on the authority levels of entries and of cataloguers, is still current or not, also with respect to the novelties introduced by Alphabetica. The analysis shows that a re-levant percentage of authority records (both in PRE and in POST) do not meet the requirements, that the choice of publication of records according to the levels of authority does not match to the standards and to the choices of other national bibliographic agencies, and that the innovations introduced in Alphabetica sug-gest a change of perspective in the organisation of SBN authority work.
The purpose of Digital Library system is collection of electronic objects. The "authorities" module runs the entire mechanism for fetching the authority data from the remote server. The study ...explores mechanisms for integration activities behind the authority control and practical evaluation. This study has been done on the publicly accessible online library OPAC through Google Form tools. It demonstrates that all authority control tools can manage several headings than just one or a few. The research seeks explanation through systematically searching observations of Online OPAC databases for studies of authority control. According to the findings, AuthorityBox is a Koha add-on that enhances the system's functionality. It complies with VIAF identifiers and other MARC21 authority data to compliance with RDA Cataloguing Guidelines. The open source integrated library system Koha enables easy authority import into the ILS-OPAC search engine. Statistically, Haringhata Mahavidyalaya, West Bengal, India used the most authority terms, with 24,820 personal names and 53,256 topical terms. This study reviews the many recommendations and techniques for designing a library discovery authority framework. It also focuses on the software and standards for integrating VIAF with Koha, VuFind, and Google Custom Search Engine for importing authority data from other libraries via the Z39.50 server.
Entity identity management and name reconciliation are intrinsic to both Linked Open Data (LOD) and traditional library authority control. Does this mean that LOD sources can facilitate authority ...control? This Emblematica Online case study examines the utility of five LOD sources for name reconciliation, comparing design differences regarding ontologies, linking models, and entity properties. It explores the challenges of name reconciliation in the LOD environment and provides lessons learned during a semi-automated name reconciliation process. It also briefly discusses the potential values and benefits of LOD authorities to the authority reconciliation process itself and library services in general.
If used up to their most important recommendations, RDA guidelines lead to a semantic web oriented catalog. Both authority and bibliographic records require to be curated, especially under the point ...of view of persistent identifiers, connecting entities to relevant external resources, thus boosting the navigability of the retrieved information and finally of the whole catalog. To dramatically improve these goals, also established records need to be provided with links, URIs, or persistent identifiers. An automatic approach was studied and applied in two phases to authority records of a Koha catalog. A new tool was created and added to the detailed display of a bibliographic record in order to show valuable information for each agent having a responsibility.
This study aims to find a method to adapt Korean bibliographic records to the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) structure. It also intends to verify that this conversion is ...possible without main entry or uniform headings because there is no rule for choice and form of the main headings in the current Korean Cataloging Rules. In this article we reviewed the role of identifiers and role indicators for FRBRizing. Also, we analyzed the characteristics of the Korean cataloging environment, focusing on the bibliographic records and authority records based on the current cataloging rules. As a result, we suggested the methodology for FRBRizing Korean bibliographic records by the combination of identifiers and role indicators. Although there is not much information about global identifiers or relator codes in bibliographic records based on the KORMARC at present, the FRBRizing method using identifiers and role indicators would be more effective for the global and networked information environment than the method using main entry or uniform headings.
