This paper undertakes a comparative analysis of two interpretations of Pavel Pestel’s personality and fate in the literature of the late Khrushchev thaw. The contribution of the peer writers to the ...liberation of cultural and historical memory from official dictatorship is discussed, the basis of their ideological similarity is shown: this is the awareness of the fatal problem of morality and revolution (Zorin). The author of the tragedy The Decembrists (1966) and the author of the novel Poor Avrosimov (published in 1969) worked with the same documents on the history of Decembrism, but each of them established his own hierarchy of sources. The article shows the difference between creative strategies and remarkable artistic results of both authors. Zorin, who surprised his contemporaries with his bold approach to a familiar topic, on the whole remained true to the spirit of the Decembrist myth. For the playwright, the memoir testimony of the priest Myslovsky (“Nothing shook his firmness”) was of paramount importance; therefore, even on the eve of his execution, Zorin’s hero is presented as a forward-looking fighter. The chief Decembrist in Okudzhava’s work is different: the concept of the novel is based on the facts that “in the first person” overturn the mythologized reputation of Pestel. This allows the modern writer to see the eternal – existential – nature in the old political tragedy. The context of Okudzhava’s creative search is formed not only by historical documents, but also by impressions from the Decembrists (a play and performance on the stage of the Sovremennik Theatre); the article underlines the main aspects of the polemical dialogue between the novelist and the playwright. While Zorin’s play skillfully updates the Decembrist mythology and Pestel’s personal myth, the myth in Okudzhava’s novel is reflected and hence overcome.
The formation of a road industry in the Bashkir ASSR in the first decade of Soviet government are discussed (1917-1927). Attention is paid to the road system, sources of its support, construction, ...financing and supply. The results of a comparative analysis of statistical indicators of road construction in BASSR and the whole country are presented. The question is raised about the readiness of BASSR road management to implement the first five-year plan. Special attention is paid to the issue of classification of roads, determining their traffic density, the material-technical base and personnel potential of road agencies. It is shown that these actions of the road authorities were undertaken partially. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that for the first time on the basis of not published earlier archival data the main problems of road affairs in Bashkiria are revealed, as well as their solutions at the local level. The regional specificity in the process of implementation of construction works are identified. The relevance of the study is determined by the large scientific and public interest in the history of road construction as a complex socio-economic and political phenomenon. The study of the road sector as a major socio-economic phenomenon in the history of our country allows to trace the complex social, economic and political relations on the example of the Bashkir ASSR.

Reddy comments on each of the essays that is framed as the discussion of a specific emotion or emotional attitude--the perception of emotional coldness (Andrei Zorin), fear (Jan Plamper), disgust ...(Olga Matich and Adi Kuntsman). He argues that these authors offer both much less and much more. Zorin's study of Aridrei Turgenev provides a glimpse of the transition from an eighteenth- to an early nineteenth-century emotional regime. Plamper's examination of the emergence of military psychology traces the development of a late nineteenth-century social science of the psyche. Matich explores the somatic anxieties of an early twentieth-century novelist, reminiscent of a whole strain of troubled and troubling early twentieth-century reflection. Kuntsman probes the powerlessness of victims of Stalinist-era labor camps, whose sufferings resemble those of millions of others caught in modernist state projects aimed at administering mass emotions. These essays shed precious new light on an emerging terrain, and, by their careful interpretive work, point to important connections and chronological twists.

The taungya method is usually defined as a reforestation method in which tree seedlings and agricultural crops are simultaneously planted at the initial stage of reforestation until the amount of ...crop harvest decrease due to crown closure. After that only the trees are left, with the final aim to establish man-made forests. The reforestation method “Yakihata-zorin (Kobasaku or Kirikaebata) in Japan is virtually the same as the taungya method and dates back to the early 1700s prior to establishment of the taungya method in Burma (Myanmar). This method is still being practiced in the Sampoku region, Niigata prefecture. At present, instead of buckwheat or millet, red turnip (Brassica campestris var. glabra), which is processed into pickles, is cultivated with Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) seedlings. When land owners permit cultivation of turnip they can save on land preparation and weeding expenses in the first year and also save weeding costs in the second year by cultivating azuki beans. The yakihata-zorin method practiced in Japan has potential for improvement of taungya method practiced in tropical countries.
