Ungeduld des Herzens (1939) is the only novel published during Stefan Zweig's lifetime. Written between 1936 and 1938, the book's genesis coincided with key events in Austrian and European history, ...including the mass displacement of Jews from Germany and the ‘Anschluss’ of Austria with Nazi‐Germany. A closer inspection of the changes from the first to the tenth and final manuscript version of the novel indicates that Zweig started out with the intention to write a psychological novella about a tragic love story. As work on the text progressed, however, Zweig added characters and plot elements which appear to comment on the political developments of the time. In this article, I will argue that the revisions Zweig made while he was re‐writing the novel add an important political subtext that aligns with the ethical objectives of his later exile works.
The sudden emergence of a foreign language in the course of an analysis is understood as a crossroad between the past and the present: The author links this emergence to Freud's search for the ...meaning of the uncanny in different languages. She suggests that the uncanny is that which provokes curiosity and is at the same time rejected, as it refers to incestuous desires that are frightening, forbidden, and disgusting. The following question is raised: Is incest at the core of the riddle of anxiety? The author traces the multiocular structure leading to an understanding of what has taken place and the vicissitudes of the sexual and the melancholic in an analysis. It is the force of the repetition compulsion that enables repressed infantile sexuality to find its way in the transference, so that it can, for the first time, be named, in terms of its contradictory and opposing forces: red and black. The author establishes a link between Freud and Laplanche in the understanding that sexuality is only incompletely transformed into psychic reality.
Abstract This article examines the biographical and literary connections between Austrian writer Stefan Zweig and psychologist Alfred Adler. While Zweig's reception of Freudian psychoanalysis has ...been widely documented by scholarship, the impact of Adler's Individual Psychology on Zweig's works has so far received little attention. The article will first establish the nature and extent of their personal relationship and Zweig's engagement with and reception of Individual Psychology. It will then draw on Zweig's posthumously published novella War er es? (1942) and provide an Adlerian reading of the text. It will be argued that Zweig's focus on Adler in his exile works owes much to his concept of Finalität , which Zweig adopts as a fundamental future‐oriented outlook in much of his later fiction and nonfiction.
This article sets out to analyse Brazil, land of the future, by Stefan Zweig, highlighting the links that connect the book to the Brazilian, North American and European intellectual contexts, as well ...as to travel writing, exile and cosmopolitanism. Brazil, land of the future contains a tense dialogue, full of failed encounters, between Zweig and the Brazilian milieu: between the author's cosmopolitan and multilingual horizon, the impossibility of belonging and his constant feeling of maladjustment. We examine Brazil, land of the future as another manifesto of the 1930s and 1940s anti-racist agenda, the product of cross-dialogues that were not limited to the social reflection on Brazil, but encompassed an international intellectual and political agenda that was continually discussed and disseminated in the United States and Europe and that approached Brazil as a field for experimenting, certifying and positivizing human relations.
This book-series, initiated in 1992, has an interdisciplinary orientation; it comprises research monographs, collections of essays and annotated editions from the 18th century to the present. The ...term German-Jewish literature refers to the literary work of Jewish authors writing in German to the extent that Jewish aspects can be identified in these. However, the image of Jews among non-Jewish authors, often determined by anti-Semitism, is also a factor in the history of German-Jewish relations as reflected in literature. This series provides an appropriate forum for research into the whole problematic area.
