Recently, a significant fragmentation of habitats and ecosystems in the Carpathians has been identified. Hence, achieving ecological connectivity between existing protected areas can help avoiding ...landscape fragmentation and preserving the natural environment, including the species most affected by human disturbances, such as the brown bear. Since this species has a long distance movement, it is important to identify its migration corridors using specific methods. Several attempts were made to create fitted approaches. This article proposes a novel approach to finding the ecological corridors used by brown bears in the Romanian Carpathians by developing a GIS model using geo-spatial applications. The advantage of the approach is that it deals with a very important aspect of spatial planning, since determining the geographic location of ecological corridors could help implementing the connectivity approach in territorial plans. Further research can improve the method, translating it from the national to the local scale, and accounting for the existing conditions, in order to obtain a real protection.
Exploring for mineral deposits within the Anka Schist Belt involves the use of traditional geological techniques such as geochemical and geophysical studies that are very expensive and time ...consuming. There is therefore need for a better alternative that will provide accurate and reliable information with cost effective and time efficient solution. This effort seeks to explore the potential of remotely sensed digital data in highlighting mineralized zones through hydrothermal alteration studies. Landsat 8 OLI data covering the investigated area was used to detect and map locations of hydrothermal alterations. Image processing methods used were spectral enhancement, false colour composites, band rationing and Principal Component Analysis. Results of false colour composites of band 5: 7: 3 highlighted generally locations of hydrothermal alterations. Band ratios of 4/2, 6/7 and 6/5 revealed the presence of ferric iron minerals, clay rich minerals and ferrous minerals respectively. Principal Components (PCs) of two sets of images (2, 4, 5, 7 H-image and 2,5,6,7 F-image) depicting iron-oxide and hydroxyl mineral deposits as bright pixels were generated. Colour composite of H, F and H+F images enhanced the location of the mineral deposits, by showing areas of mineralization in dark blue (Fe rich), bright yellow (clay rich) and white (Fe and clay rich areas) pixels. Field coordinates of mining locations were superimposed on the remote sensing generated mineral map. The results were found to be in tune. This study recommends the use of remote sensing and geospatial technology in mineral studies through hydrothermal alteration within the basement complex rocks of Nigeria.
Cultural landscapes are poorly inventoried and evaluated in protected natural areas. This study presents a novel procedure to assess cultural landscape features and their cultural values in the major ...protected areas of Greece. After identifying a set of culturally modified land cover types and habitat types the GIS-based survey of the entire Natura 2000 protected area network in Greece (419 sites) shows that roughly 67% of protected area land cover consists of cultural landscape features. This was corroborated by the distribution of culturally modified habitat types which take up approximately 50% of the areal cover in a subset of the nation's Natura 2000 network (241 Special Areas for Conservation). Moreover, a set of 12 cultural attributes involving cultural heritage values, traditional land uses and aesthetic quality indicators were scored to assess these “cultural values” in each site. Gradient maps were produced to express an initial nation-wide site ranking profile. Heatmaps help link instead of solely rank culturally valuable sites that are in proximity to each other, showcasing site clusters of outstanding value. These analyses help define the level of “culturalness” of each site based on human-modified landscape and habitat types and provide a baseline review of cultural values in protected natural areas. This screening-level survey identifies the protected areas that may require special attention for managing cultural elements-of-diversity. Difficulties with data availability and uncertainties are reviewed. This procedure supports a paradigm shift that promotes a more holistic evaluation and management of biodiversity-centered protected areas, where until recently cultural landscapes were rarely appreciated.

He attended primary school in his native village (1939-1943), high school in Iași (Veniamin Costachi ...Seminar, 1943-1946, and Theoretical High School in Paşcani, 1946-1951), university studies at the Faculty of Geology-Geography, Department of Geography, University of Bucharest graduated with a diploma of merit (1955); had his doctoral thesis Lakes in Romania-genesis and hydrological regime presented at the University from Cluj (1960) and that for doctoral professor - Lakes in Romania - regional limnology at the same university (1971), for which he received the Romanian Academy Award "Gheorghe Murgoci", both works being published in the Romanian Academy Publishing House.
