Global awareness of autism has skyrocketed since the 1980s, and
popular culture has caught on, with film and television producers
developing ever more material featuring autistic characters.
Autism ...in Film and Television brings together more than a
dozen essays on depictions of autism, exploring how autistic
characters are signified in media and how the reception of these
characters informs societal understandings of autism.
Editors Murray Pomerance and R. Barton Palmer have assembled a
pioneering examination of autism's portrayal in film and
television. Contributors consider the various means by which autism
has been expressed in films such as Phantom Thread,
Mercury Rising , and Life Animated and in
television and streaming programs including Atypical ,
Stranger Things , Star Trek: The Next Generation ,
and Community . Across media, the figure of the brilliant,
accomplished, and "quirky" autist has proven especially appealing.
Film and television have thus staked out a progressive position on
neurodiversity by insisting on screen time for autism but have done
so while frequently ignoring the true diversity of autistic
experience. As a result, this volume is a welcome celebration of
nonjudgmental approaches to disability, albeit one that is still
freighted with stereotypes and elisions.
Autism spectrum disorders are developmental disorders. Individuals with autism spectrum disorders develop differently. These differences are usually present in social interaction, communication, and ...sensory processing, and become visible through a wide variety of behavioral responses that differ from individuals without autism spectrum disorders. Despite significant research efforts, the exact causes of autism spectrum disorders remain poorly understood; however, researchers have gained extensive insights into possible pathomechanisms, even at the molecular level of cells. Many diagnostic criteria have been developed, adapted, and improved. The eight chapters in this book highlight the current state-of-the-art in many areas of autism spectrum disorders. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the epidemiology of autism spectrum disorders and the current knowledge of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Chapter 2 summarizes the diagnostic criteria and procedures and highlights present and upcoming therapeutic strategies. Chapter 3 reviews the adverse events and trauma in people with autism spectrum disorders. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on atypical sensory processing, and Chapter 6 discusses the genetic overlap of autism spectrum disorders with other neuropsychiatric disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, and schizophrenia. Chapter 7 focuses on the contribution of abnormalities in mitochondria, and chapter 8 discusses gut-brain interactions and a potential role for microbiota in autism spectrum disorders. This book is aimed primarily at clinicians and scientists, but many areas will also be of interest to the layperson.

IntroductionIn the context of developmental disorders, it is frequently observed that atypical processes may yield seemingly unimpaired behavioural outcomes. Research has shown that children and ...adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have intact statistical learning performance. Recent studies have indicated that learning can happen not only during practice but during ultrashort rests between practice blocks (that is, ultrafast offline learning) but no study to date examined these dynamics in ASD.ObjectivesThis research aimed to unravel the effect of ASD on learning during and between blocks, also known as online and offline improvement.MethodsWe conducted a series of research with three different samples: 1) ASD children (N = 27), 2) ASD adults (N = 42), and 3) neurotypical adults with distinct positions on the autism spectrum, i.e., the severity of autistic traits (N = 174). Participants performed the Alternating Serial Reaction Time task, allowing us to measure statistical learning (the extraction of statistical knowledge) and general skill learning (speed-up regardless of probabilities) separately.ResultsIndividual differences in online and offline improvements were observed. Results of individual studies further confirmed by meta-analysis performed on the three above-mentioned datasets show that neither ASD nor the severity of autistic traits influences the dynamics of learning.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that, not only learning but also the dynamics of acquisition of statistical knowledge are intact in autism.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared
Evaluer des eleves ayant un trouble du spectre de l'autisme (TSA) represente un defi pour les enseignants, ce qui peut affecter leur sentiment d'efficacite personnelle (SEP). Les eleves ayant un TSA ...presentent des specificites multiples pour lesquelles s'imposent souvent des amenagements dans les pratiques pedagogiques, plus specifiquement dans les pratiques evaluatives. Selon la litterature consultee, le SEP des enseignants a un effet direct sur les pratiques enseignantes et leur sante mentale. Les resultats de notre etude proposent que l'appropriation de pratiques puisse devenir un levier dans l'evolution du SEP des enseignants lorsque ces derniers sont impliques dans un processus de developpement professionnel pour lequel des ressources adaptees et de l'accompagnement sont offerts. It impacts the sense of personal effectiveness of teachers working with these learners who can have multiple specificities and for whom adjustments to pedagogical practices, and specifically assessment practices, are often essential. According to the literature, teachers' self-efficacy has a direct effect on teaching practices and their mental health. The results of our study suggest that the appropriation of practices can improve teachers' self-efficacy when they are involved in a professional development process providing suitable material and support.
