Postpartum blues (PPB) is a frequent syndrome of sad mood, crying spells, anxiety, restlessness, reduced appetite, and irritability, typically peaking day 5 postpartum. When severe, it greatly ...increases risk for later postpartum depression. This trial compared a dietary supplement to placebo on PPB severity. The supplement was designed to counter downstream effects of elevated monoamine oxidase A level, implicated in causing PPB.
Participants recruited by advertisement from the Toronto region completed procedures at CAMH, Canada and/or participants’ homes. Oral supplement or identical appearing relatively inert placebo were administered in randomised, double-blind fashion. Supplement was blueberry juice and extract given four times between nighttime day 3 and morning day 5 postpartum; tryptophan 2 g nighttime day 4 postpartum, and tyrosine 10 g morning day 5 postpartum. On day 5, depressed mood induction procedure (MIP) and postpartum blues were assessed. All data is presented (NCT03296956 closed, clinicaltrials.gov).
Between January 2019 and December 2022, participants took supplement (n = 51) or placebo (n = 52). There was no significant effect on primary outcome MIP on visual analogue scale for depressed mood (mean difference = −0.39 mm, 95% CI: −6.42 to 5.65 mm). Stein Maternity Blues scores, exploratory PPB measure, was lower in the active group (effect size 0.62; median, interquartile range (IQR): active 2.00 (IQR 1, 4); placebo 4.00 (IQR 1.5, 6); regression with general linear model, supplement effect, β coefficient = −1.50 (95%: CI −2.60, −0.40), p = 0.008; effect of CES-D crying category before supplement, p = 0.03–0.00000023). Twenty-six and 40 different adverse events occurred within 25% and 42% of supplement and placebo cases respectively (Chi-Square, p = 0.06).
The primary outcome was negative for effect on depressed mood induction, however the supplement moderately reduced PPB.

This book presents a biography of American blues singer and guitarist Eddie James “Son” House, Jr. (1902–1988). House pioneered an innovative style, incorporating strong repetitive rhythms with ...elements of southern gospel and spiritual vocals. A seminal figure in the history of the Delta blues, he was an important, direct influence on such figures as Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. The landscape of Son House's life and the vicissitudes he endured make for an absorbing narrative, threaded through with a tension between House's religious beliefs and his spells of commitment to a lifestyle that implicitly rejected it. Drinking, womanizing, and singing the blues caused this tension that is palpable in his music, and becomes explicit in one of his finest performances, “Preachin' the Blues.” Large parts of House's life are obscure, not least because his own accounts of them were inconsistent. The book offers a chronology/topography of House's youth, and illuminates the obscurity of House's two decades in Rochester, NY. It gives a detailed and perceptive account of House's primary musical legacy: his recordings for Paramount in 1930 and for the Library of Congress in 1941–42. The book utilizes connections among the many scattered facts and fictions with new information about a rumored murder in Mississippi, and a charge of manslaughter on Long Island—incidents which bring tragic light upon House's lifelong struggles and self-imposed disappearance, and give trenchant meaning to the moving music of this early blues legend.

•Postpartum blues is real and prevalent among Nigerian women.•Postpartum blues affects almost half of women following delivery.•Associated factors are female baby, preterm delivery, postpartum ...complications and average annual family income.
Postpartum blues usually connotes a brief psychological disturbance in mood within few days of delivery. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of postnatal blues and associated risk factors in a population of Nigerian women.
We performed a cross-sectional study involving 292 parturients on third day of the delivery in our center between April 2019 and August 2019. Postnatal blues was assessed with Kennerly and Gath Blues questionnaire and a mean score of greater than 7 was taken as cut-off. They also completed Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) questionnaires. Socio-demographic characteristics were also obtained.
The prevalence of postnatal blues was 45.5%. Postnatal blues was associated with birth of a female baby (50% compared with 40%, adjusted OR 2.37 95% CI 1.29–4.31, p = 0.005), preterm delivery (66.7% compared with 42.6%, adjusted OR 3.79 95% CI 1.54–9.31, p = 0.004); and puerperal complications. (58.3% compared with 44.4%, adjusted OR 5.25 95% CI 1.71–16.07) and average annual family income (p < 0.001).
Postnatal blues is real and prevalent among Nigerian women. Healthcare providers should endeavor to be vigilant in order to diagnose postnatal blues promptly and do the necessary follow up.

Materiał i metody
Badaniem zostało objętych 318 studentów medycyny UJK. Dane zostały zebrane za pomocą kwestionariusza autorskiego. Komisja Bioetyczna zatwierdziła badanie. Analiza statystyczna przeprowadzona została za pomocą programu komputerowego Statistica 13.
Wyniki i wnioski
