The effect of three anaesthetics (2-phenoxyethanol, clove oil, and Propiscin) was tested on 11 fish species (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Thymallus thymallus, Salvelinus fontinalis, Esox lucius, Cyprinus ...carpio, Tinca tinca, Leuciscus leuciscus, Gobio gobio, Lota lota, Perca fluviatilis, Oreochromis niloticus) using the recommended concentrations for 10 min exposure at 10, 15 and/or 20 deg C. The fish behaviour after anaesthetic application was monitored and is described in this article. The fish reactions were very various and depended on the species, anaesthetic type and concentration used. This study confirms that it is very important to know the exact effect of anaesthesy on each fish species in order to improve the fish welfare during different manipulatons.
