The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of administration of Camelina sativa oil (CO) as a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on bone parameters in ovariectomized rats ...(OVX). Overall, 40 10-week-old healthy female Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups with 10 animals in each. Rats in the control group (SHO) were subjected to a sham operation, whereas experimental rats (OVX) were ovariectomized. After a 7-day recovery period, the SHO the rats received orally 1 mL of physiological saline for the next 6 weeks. The OVX rats received orally 1 mL of physiological saline (OVX-PhS), 5 g/kg BW (OVX-CO5), or 9 g/kg BW (OVX-CO9) of camelina oil. The use of camelina oil had a significant effect on body weight, lean mass, and fat mass. The camelina oil administration suppressed the decrease in the values of some densitometric, tomographic, and mechanical parameters of femur caused by estrogen deficiency. The CO treatment increased significantly the serum level of osteocalcin and decreased the serum level of C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen in the OVX rats. In conclusion, camelina oil exerts a positive osteotropic effect by inhibiting ovariectomy-induced adverse changes in bones. Camelina oil supplementation can be used as an efficient method for improving bone health in a disturbed state. However, further research must be carried out on other animal species supplemented with the oil.
Nowadays, a major preoccupation is the production and usage of fuels obtained from renewable and eco-friendly sources. Camelina sativa is well-suited to be a sustainable bio-fuel crop, as its seeds ...naturally have high oil content. However, the process of obtaining bio-kerosene from camelina oil by hydrotreatment is time consuming and expensive at this moment. Thus, the possibility of using straight camelina oil as fuel in terrestrial applications has been taken into consideration. For this purpose, combustion tests have been conducted on a burner. Tests at different burner functioning regimes have been carried out by varying both the pressure of the air used for fuel atomization, and the air flow delivered by the burner's fan. The influence of the variation of the fuel preheating temperature is also studied and presented. During the tests, the composition of the exhaust gas and temperature have been monitored and registered using two gas analysers. The results have been compared with those obtained when the burner was fuelled with pure kerosene.
Novel multiple emulsion technology was used to enrich spreads (oil-in-water-in-oil, O/W/O, emulsions) with omega-3 rich oils. Effects of oil type (camelina, fish, camelina–fish oil blends) on lipid ...oxidation (lipid hydroperoxide values; p-Anisidine values), confocal imaging, rheology, and firmness of spreads (75 g/100 g fat), throughout storage at 5 °C, were examined. Fish oil had higher lipid hydroperoxides and p-Anisidine values (p-Avs) than camelina oil (P < 0.05). As the ratio of camelina oil (C) blended with the fish oil (F) was increased (72:28, 85:15, 95:5), lipid hydroperoxides and p-Avs decreased (P < 0.05). Lipid hydroperoxides of spreads increased during storage, whereas p-Avs remained level. When polyunsaturation level of the omega-3 oil incorporated into the spreads was higher, lipid hydroperoxides were unaffected and p-Avs increased. C:F (95:5) and C:F (85:15) spreads had the highest G′ values (P < 0.05), followed by the control spread (no ω-3 oil). Texture analysis showed that C:F (95:5) spread was the hardest (P > 0.05) and C spread (no β-carotene) was the softest (P < 0.05). Omega-3 oils had better oxidative stability when incorporated into double emulsion systems. Camelina spread and spreads containing blends of 15:85 or 5:95 fish oil with camelina oil, maintained adequate sensory acceptability for 8 weeks storage at 5 °C.

Lately, renewable resources received great attention in the macromolecular compounds area, regarding the design of the monomers and polymers with different applications. In this study the capacity of ...several modified vegetable oil-based monomers to build competitive hybrid networks was investigate, taking into account thermal and mechanical behavior of the designed materials. In order to synthesize such competitive nanocomposites, the selected renewable raw material, camelina oil, was employed due to the non-toxicity and biodegradability behavior. General properties of epoxidized camelina oil-based materials were improved by loading of different types of organic-inorganic hybrid compounds - polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) bearing one (POSS1Ep) or eight (POSS8Ep) epoxy rings on the cages. In order to identify the chemical changes occurring after the thermal curing reactions, FT-IR spectrometry was employed. The new synthesized nanocomposites based on epoxidized camelina oil (ECO) were characterized by dynamic mechanical analyze and thermogravimetric analyze. The morphology of the ECO-based materials was investigate by scanning electron microscopy and supplementary information regarding the presence of the POSS compounds were establish by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The smooth materials without any separation phase indicates a well dispersion of the Si-O-Si cages within the organic matrix and the incorporation of this hybrid compounds into the ECO network demonstrates to be a well strategy to improve the thermal and mechanical properties, simultaneously.
A novel mesoporous Zn/MgO hexagonal-nano-plate catalyst was synthesized by a simple template-free hydrothermal method and applied in the base-catalyzed transesterification of Camelina oil for ...biodiesel synthesis. The Zn/MgO catalyst calcinated at 873 K exhibited the highest catalytic activity with a yield of 88.7%. This catalytic reaction was performed using 3% w/w of the catalyst with a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 24:1 at 393 K in 8 h. The excellent catalytic performance is possibly attributed to its favorable textural features with relatively high surface area (69.1 m2 g−1) and appropriate size of the mesopores (10.4 nm). In addition, the as-synthesized catalyst demonstrated a greater basic sites density than single mesoporous MgO, which might have been promoted by the addition of Zn, leading to a synergetic interaction that enhanced its catalytic activity. This catalytic system demonstrated high stability for five catalytic runs and catalytic activity with over 84% yield.
Reactive distillation (RD) is a chemical unit operation in which chemical reaction and product separation occurs simultaneously in one unit resulted in reduce the number of downstream steps, energy ...savings, and greenhouse gases. In the current work, process flow sheets for industrial routes for conversion of camelina oil fatty acids to fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) in presence of acid catalyst is modelled in Aspen HYSYS for the purpose to scale up the esters production. The effect of the operating and design parameters is optimized in addition to design the production plant. The simulation results showed that optimum ester yield is obtained for linoleic acid and palmatic components using 6:1 alcohol to oil ratio, reaction temperature 60°C and feeding the oil and the alcohol at stage number 3 and 5 respectively.

The influence of deodorization parameters (temperature (T), steam flow (S), time (t)) on the phenolic content and radical scavenging effectiveness (RSE) of methanolic extracts of camelina oil was ...investigated and analyzed by response-surface methodology (RSM). The phenolic content can be considered to be a linear function of all three parameters. A positive linear relationship between the content of phenolic compounds in deodorized oils and RSE was observed. Deodorization at 210 °C with a steam flow of 3 mL/h for 90 min resulted in the best preservation of phenolics, amounting to 29.9 mg/kg. The lowest reduction from RSE of 12.4 μM Trolox equivalents (TE)/g oil for the crude oil was observed for oil treated at 195 °C and 18 mL/h for 60 min with RSE of 10.1 μM TE/g oil. The lack of correlation between RSE or total phenolic content and oxidative stability (OS) of the deodorized oils suggests that antioxidants in scavenging radicals react by different mechanisms, depending on radical type and reaction medium.
