This significant new study is concerned with the role of interpreting in Nazi concentration camps, where prisoners were of 30 to 40 different nationalities. With German as the only official language ...in the lager, communication was vital to the prisoners' survival. While in the last few decades there has been extensive research on the language used by the camp inmates, investigation into the mediating role of interpreters between SS guards and prisoners on the one hand, and among inmates on the other, has been almost nonexistent. On the basis of Primo Levi's considerations on communication in the Nazi concentrationary system, this book investigates the ambivalent role of interpreting in the camps. One of the central questions is what the role of interpreting was in the wider context of shaping life in concentration camps. And in what way did the knowledge of languages, and accordingly, certain communication skills, contribute to the survival of concentration camp inmates and of the interpreting person? The main sources under investigation are both archive materials and survivors' memoirs and testimonials in various languages. On a different level, Interpreting in Nazi Concentration Camps also asks in what way the study of communication in concentration camps enhances our understanding of the ambiguous role of interpreting in more general terms. And in what way does the study of interpreting in concentration camps shape an interpreting concept which can help us to better understand the violent nature of interpreting in contexts other than the Holocaust?

Associant témoins, chercheurs et archivistes, cet évènement permettait de faire le point sur les recherches déjà entreprises, souvent par les associations de rescapées, puis par les fondations mémorielles. À la lumière des recherches récentes, fondées sur l’exploitation de ressources inédites, dont les archives de l’Association nationale des anciennes déportées et internées de la résistance (ADIR) conservées à La contemporaine-BDIC, de nouvelles pistes de réflexion sont apparues.Femmes en déportation met en lumière les différences de parcours des déportées et internées, la pluralité des causes de leur engagement dans la résistance et les conditions particulières de la réinsertion des rescapées après-guerre. Chacune des contributions montre la nécessité d’appréhender la déportation féminine du point de vue de l’histoire des femmes et révèle l’apport indispensable d’une telle approche à la compréhension de cette période.
A fome é a violação estrutural do Direito Humano à Alimentação Adequada (DHAA), passível de agravamento tanto por questões humanas (sociais, econômicas, políticas) quanto por calamidades naturais, ...como secas e enchentes. Em 1932, durante um período de grave estiagem, no Ceará, flagelados da seca passaram a migrar para os núcleos urbanos mais próximos, em busca de condições mínimas de vida. Despertando o temor higienista de elites locais, este indesejável contingente migratório foi alojado em campos de concentração, a fim de inviabilizar o fluxo de famintos que alcançavam as cidades. A medida segregacionista criou ambientes de violência e desumanização institucionalizadas. Esperava-se que um acontecimento desta natureza servisse para motivar a constitucionalização do DHAA. Entretanto, a constitucionalização explícita só se verificou com a Emenda Constitucional n 64/2010, 78 anos depois. Este artigo visa compreender em que medidas a seca de 1932 colaborou enquanto fonte material para a constitucionalização do DHAA, cotejando-se a evolução deste direito, desde aquela calamidade até o presente, objetivando-se compreender a razão da demora na sua constitucionalização e o efeito prático que a omissão constitucional trouxe à população vulnerável brasileira.

This article presents an accompanying description of the process involved in commemorating the former labor and concentration camp, Plaszow. The actors involved primarily differ in the function they ...desire to attribute to the memorial, while the strong emotions accompanying them are primarily a consequence of the process's underlying cause - death ingrained in the post-camp landscape. Engagement in the process evokes suffering, which limits the possibilities for dialogue surrounding commemoration. Recently, the appointment of a caretaker for the site of memory, the KL Plaszow Museum, has proven to be the most influential factor in the dynamics of the process. Given that the museum is an enduring institution, there is now a strong need to explore new forms of mediation that facilitate understanding. In the author's view, specialists in culture studies, with their expert competencies, can serve as neutral intermediaries bridging the diverse expectations of the actors.
