Roman
Leica format
The Leica Format
(2003), novel written by Daša Drndić, has been
recognized as a remarkable cultural and political event, equally important in
the field of Croatian literary criticism and literary historiography as in
general public. Numerous recent readings have insisted on its stylistic, genre
and discursive complexity. Drawing from such insights and recognizing the
ethical potential in the work of the narration, this paper is further organised
around the analyses of its effects. In the realm of the postclassical
narratology thesis, a close reading of Leica Format is a complex communication
act whose consequences for readers and their reading could be numerous and
heterogeneous. The aim is to reveal how to confront the readers with the
multi-layered narrative strategies which draw them into the risky game of
setting the boundaries and dividing the zones under the circumstances in which
every decision would, at the same time, be both impossible and absolutely
necessary.
Celan, Primo Levi, Wisława Szymborska, Witold Gombrowicz, Walter Benjamin i
drugi. Tretirajući biografije autora/ica i njihove književne tekstove kao
ponekad posredstvom svojih književnih tekstova, a ponekad izravno, kao
sudionici naracije. U radu se analiziraju tri postupka u funkciji oblikovanja zasebnog kanona
književnih tekstova: postupak fikcionalizacije biografija autora, postupak multipliciranja implicitnih autora i postupak
fikcionalizacije autobiografskog subjekta. Dok se fikcionalizacijom autora kao
stvarnih povijesnih osoba, multipliciraju književni likovi, multipliciranjem
fikcionalizacije autobiografskog subjekta, oslabila prethodno stečena autorska
pripovjedačka pozicija.
Daša Drndić’s literary oeuvre belongs to a separate canon of literary texts that the authoress herself affirms with her writing in search of her own interpretative community away from the canon ruled by hierarchies based on national and ideological categories. Her canon is shaped from an autobiographical discursive position, that is, from the perspective of an authoress who “draws” into her narrative space the voices of other authors and authoresses, most frequently those who wrote about the Holocaust or were victims of the Holocaust. In her writing, she conveys someone else’s testimony or trauma and creates polyphonic prose compositions in which the authoress at the same time becomes the object of representation and the subject of mediation. So, the authoress’s narration is joined by other narrators – Danilo Kiš, Bruno Schulz, Aharon Appelfeld, Paul Celan, Primo Levi, Wisława Szymborska, Witold Gombrowicz, Walter Benjamin and others. By treating the authors’ biographies and their literary texts as equally (un)reliable documents, the selected authors are sometimes joined to her text through their literary texts and sometimes directly as participants in the narrative. The paper analyses three procedures in the function of shaping a separate canon of literary texts: the procedure of fictionalizing authors’ biographies, the procedure for multiplying the implied authors, and the procedure of fictionalizing an autobiographical subject. While by fictionalizing the authors as real historical figures literary characters are multiplied, by multiplying the implied authors the autobiographical position of the narrative subject is strengthened and supported, but in order to weaken the previously acquired authorial narrative position through the process of fictionalizing the autobiographical subject.
In this paper I will reflect on the role of photographs in the works of Daša Drndić. Mixing fictional and documentary modes is a characteristic feature of her texts. It is achieved among others by ...utilizing visual representations of the past. In my paper I aim to outline the strategies of visualization applied by the authoress (especially the traumatic, Holocaust-related experience), which materialize through photographs included in her works of literature.
In the case of Drndić the visuals include for instance contemporary or archival photographs of places marked by the Holocaust and of Jewish inhabitants of Vienna as well as portraits of war criminals. Generally speaking, in her texts the photographs function as concretization (concretization) of the memory of injustice, of trauma and ultimately of the Holocaust. The photographs are by no means neutral images though they are commonly perceived as such. Interaction between the text (itself skirting the boundary between fact and fiction) and the image puts the latter in a position that is far from neutral. In Drndić’s case, the photos are often used as an inventory (archival) practice, but they constitute predominantly a way of overcoming the crisis, related to the intention of giving an account of the past, particularly a testimony of the Holocaust.
Obustaviti postupak
Claudia Magrisa ...i
Sonnenschein
The paper deals with the collective memory of the San Sabba Rice Mill, a Nazi concentration camp that operated in Trieste from 1943 to 1945, through the analysis of twocontemporary novels: Blameless by Claudio Magris and Sonnenschein by Daša Drndić.The first part presents basic historical data and various stages of memory, especially with regard to the proclamation of the national monument, the legal process for crimes committed in the camp, and the establishment of a museum. Particular attention is paid to the comparison of the San Sabba Rice Mill with the crimes committed by Yugoslav partisans during the liberation of Trieste in May 1945. This comparison has appeared in public space and collective memory more frequently since the time of the trial. Susanne C. Knittel’s research is presented, which, using the psychoanalytic concept of the uncanny, connects the repressed memory of Nazi euthanasia programs with that of the Slovenian and Croatian victims of the San Sabba Rice Mill. In the second part of the paper, these insights will be applied to the analysis of the two novels.

Knittel’s comparative research on the repression of the memory of mass suffering of discriminated groups (persons with disabilities, national minorities), this (second and last) part scrutinises the two novels from the memory studies’ perspective. The analysis shows that both novels approach the Holocaust from a universal and cosmopolitan stand, neglecting local specificities and perpetuating the stereotypical memory that sees only the so-called “innocent” victims (as they were defined in the 1976 trial), and forgets those who were killed as members of the resistance movement, especially its communistcomponent, with a large share of Slovenes and Croats.

The aim of this article is to document, contextualise, and theorise the rebellious actions carried out by artists in Slovenia in 2020-2021, and to present these actions as a continuation of the ...avant-garde movements of the twentieth century. We focus on the diverse actions and protests carried out by a strong alliance of artists, anti-capitalists, anti-fascists, ecological movements, and other civil structures that continue to challenge the oppressive autocratic powers. When art becomes confrontational, it fights for its autonomy and its production can achieve an aesthetic revolutionary potential. So when it demands the impossible, it fights for its space and position and becomes life itself, it becomes avant-garde. We could therefore say that the politics of aesthetics has a way of producing its own politics, proposing to re-arrange politics, re-configure art as a political issue or assert itself as true politics.
This article sketches a history of how the concept of Italy has travelled worldwide to become a mobile cultural symbol in order to show how, as a signifier, "Italy" has also become increasingly ...detached from any national parameters of territory. It employs a lateral method of "looking sideways" at literary representations of Italy from "outside" the national canon to show how they can put pressure on what (and where) Italian culture now resides. Analyzing three contemporary works of world literature partially set in Italy (Daša Drndić's Trieste, Rachel Kushner's The Flamethrowers, and Pajtim Statovci's Crossing), it suggests that we might consider broadening out the canon of transnational Italian literature to include works neither written by Italians nor written in Italian, but that offer sideways insight into Italian history and culture from elsewhere.
povijesnim i suvremenim događanjima, no političnost prema Rancièreu
kontinuiteta, depersonalizacije, koherencije događaja i fabulativne
cjelovitosti.
istovremenosti u razumijevanje prošlosti i sadašnjosti. Premještanjem
uvriježenih koordinata kontinuiteta i diskontinuiteta s prošlošću, Drndić u
svojim romanima pridonosi rušenju koherencije i iluzije cjelovitosti u pripovjednoj konstrukciji prošlosti.
nudi kroz historiografiju i druge realistički orijentirane tekstove.
