Attempts to keep the German language free from the influence of other languages go back a long way. The current trend towards the renewed founding of language associations can be viewed as a new phase of linguistic purism in Germany. The largest group opposed to the use of Anglicisms in German is the Dortmund-based Verein Deutsche Sprache (VDS), which was founded in 1997. The VDS can now look back on over ten years of its history. During this time, the association has metamorphosed from a minor grouping into an influential association with more than thirty-one thousand members in over seventy countries. Its founder, statistics professor Dr. Walter Krämer, has remained chairperson of the association from its beginnings. This current portrait of the VDS examines the emergence, the organization and the activities of the association against the wider background of the discussion of loan words and the work of other language associations in Germany. To this end, literary sources were evaluated comprehensively, as were the entire contents of the archive of the association´s head office in Dortmund and the personal archive of the initiator of the VDS from the point when the association was founded. The analysis encompassed the period up to 2009. The VDS aims to counteract the spread of Anglicisms in German, and to heighten awareness of the topic in media, politics and business circles. The activities of the association, described in detail in the present study, include organized events, particularly on the “German Language Day” initiated by the association, publications such as the association´s magazine, public lectures, correspondence, media relations and award ceremonies. It is notable that the work of the association is often characterized by a strongly emotional attitude towards the German language. The present study also concerns itself with the question of how the association – in the opinion of the members – defines which Anglicisms should be resisted. No firm consensus on this issue exists within the organization. The association sees itself as a citizen´s initiative and not as an exclusive academic club. The members are reluctant to classify themselves as linguistic purists, although their aims clearly include ridding the language of undesirable elements. The present study demonstrates that the association can clearly be seen as a purist group, since arguments and attitudes found in purist discourse, which were perceived as having been entirely absent from the discussion in Germany over many years, have been revived and used to stimulate the debate on Anglicisms afresh. The results of the present study document that the VDS is characterized by active public relations and a high level of internal activity. This suggests that the VDS may well have consolidated its role as spearhead in challenging Anglicisms still further by now. Its reputation for being in the vanguard in this area would appear to have been earned. It can be assumed that the activities of the association will leave their mark in the medium or long term. What is more significant, however, is that the resonance which these activities find in the media has considerable influence on public discourse.

Dieses Buch ist eine empirische Studie, die individuelle Gründe für spezifische Sprachpraktiken und für die Verhandlung und Performanz hybrider Identitäten innerhalb der intimsten "Community of ...Practice (CofP)", der Ehe, untersucht. Die der Studie zugrundeliegenden Daten stammen zum einen aus ethnographischen Beobachtungen, die über drei Jahre durchgeführt wurden; zum anderen aus Interviews mit interkulturellen Paaren, genauer mit Personen englischer Muttersprache, die mit deutschsprachigen SchweizerInnen verheiratet sind und in einer diglossen Sprachregion in der Zentralschweiz leben. Die Studie nimmt eine interdisziplinäre Perspektive ein, welche sich dem soziokulturellen linguistischen Zugang zu Identität und der sozialpsychologischen Theorie des "Positioning" bedient. Der neuartige theoretische Ansatz dieses Buches besteht aus der Rekonzeptualisierung von Identität, da die emische Perspektive der UntersuchungsteilnehmerInnen miteinbezogen wird. Diese können sich nämlich nicht von der sozial konstruierten Idee einer stabilen Identität trennen, obwohl sie zugeben, Teil gewisser soziokultureller Darstellungen zu sein. Die Analyse zeigt, wie Individuen ihre statischen und dynamischen Identitäten diskursiv konstruieren. Weiter wird die Bedeutung expliziter wie auch impliziter Identitätsansprüche individueller TeilnehmerInnen hervorgehoben und durch die Unterscheidung zweier Arten von Identität - situated und situationalidentities - illustriert. Die Ansichten der TeilnehmerInnen selbst fügt eine weitere Ebene zu jeglicher soziologischen, anthropologischen und linguistischen Analyse von Menschen in Diasporas hinzu. Während postmoderne Definitionen Identität als multivalent betrachten und die interaktionale Soziolinguistik Identität als emergent versteht, wird hier für eine Auseinandersetzung mit Identität argumentiert, welche essentialistische Vorstellungen nicht verwirft, da sich Individuen selbst mehrheitlich als gefestigte und einheitliche Persönlichkeiten verstehen. This book presents an empirical study that examines individuals' reasons for specific language practices and investigates the negotiation and performances of hybrid identities within the most intimate community of practice (CofP), the marital unit. The data stem from ethnographic observation over a three-year period as well as recorded conversations with intercultural couples, namely Anglophones married to native German-speaking Swiss, who reside in central Switzerland, where a diglossic situation prevails. This study is placed within an interdisciplinary framework that draws on the sociocultural linguistic approach to identity and the social psychological theory of positioning. The novel approach on which this book focuses is the re-conceptualization of identity by considering participants' emic perspectives since individuals cannot part with the idea of a socially constructed notion of a stable identity despite admitting to engaging in certain socio-cultural practices. The analysis shows how individuals discursively construct their static and dynamic identities. It emphasizes the importance of individuals' explicit identity claims as well as their implicit identity claims illustrating a clear distinction between two types of identities, termed situated and situational. This book argues that participants' views add another level to any sociological, anthropological and linguistic analyses of diasporic individuals. While post-modern definitions of identity are understood as multivalent and interactional sociolinguistic studies view identity as emergent, this study shows that any discussion of identity should not discard the notion of essentialism since individuals more often construct themselves and each other as stable and unitary beings within the context of social interaction.
Die Untersuchung von Spracheinstellungen zu Mehrsprachigkeit, wie sie etwa in sprachbiographischen Interviews geäußert werden, erfolgt meist über inhaltsanalytische Zugänge. Die vorliegende Arbeit ...fasst jedoch Spracheinstellungsäußerungen als für den spezifischen Erhebungskontext des Interviews hervorgebrachte Gesprächsbeiträge, die entsprechend gesprächsanalytisch auszuwerten sind (z.B. Bearbeitung der kommunikativen Aufgaben in einem qualitativen Interview, Rezipientenzuschnitt der Gesprächsbeiträge der Interviewten). Die Arbeit widmet sich auf Basis eines Korpus von 14 sprachbiographischen Interviews außerdem der Frage, wie sich die interviewten Deutsch- VietnamesInnen – eine bislang in der Migrationslinguistik vernachlässigte Gruppe – in ihren Spracheinstellungsäußerungen gegenüber der Interviewerin positionieren. Spezifisch wird betrachtet, welche "Sprachräume" die Interviewten als relevant konstruieren und wie sie sich innerhalb dieser Sprachräume als mehrsprachige Individuen verorten. Bestrebungen, die Sprache von Einflüssen anderer Sprachen freizuhalten, haben in Deutschland eine lange Tradition. Der englischsprachige Einfluss und damit einhergehend die Anglizismenkritik sind in den letzten Jahren wieder in den öffentlichen Diskurs gerückt. Die derzeitige Entwicklung mit der Neugründung von Sprachvereinen ist als neue Phase des Purismus in Deutschland zu sehen. Die größte Vereinigung, die sich gegen Anglizismen im Deutschen wendet, ist der 1997 gegründete Dortmunder Verein Deutsche Sprache (VDS). Der VDS blickt mittlerweile auf eine über zehnjährige Vereinsgeschichte zurück. In dieser Zeit hat er sich von einem kleinen zu einem einflussreichen Verein mit mehr als 31 000 Mitgliedern in über 70 Ländern gewandelt. Gegründet hat ihn der Statistikprofessor Dr. Walter Krämer; er ist seit der Gründung auch Vorsitzender des Vereins. Der VDS wird portraitiert anhand seiner Entstehung, Organisation und Vereinsarbeit vor dem Hintergrund der Fremdwortdiskussion und der sprachpflegenden Vereine in Deutschland. Für das Portrait des VDS wurde eine Vollerhebung aller Materialien aus dem Archiv des Bundesverbands in Dortmund sowie dem privaten Archiv des Vereinsgründers ab dem Zeitpunkt der Gründung bis in das Jahr 2009 durchgeführt. Ziel des VDS ist, gegen die Anglizismen im Deutschen vorzugehen, beziehungsweise Medien, Politik und Wirtschaft auf das Thema aufmerksam zu machen. Ausführlich dargestellt wird die Arbeit des Vereins. Diese besteht unter anderem aus Veranstaltungen, vor allem zum vom Verein ausgerufenen Tag der deutschen Sprache, aus Publikationen wie der Vereinszeitschrift, aus Vorträgen, Briefwechseln, der Pressearbeit und Preisverleihungen. Hier ist festzustellen, dass die Vereinsarbeit häufig durch eine stark emotionalisierte Einstellung gegenüber der Sprache geprägt ist. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich auch mit der Frage, inwiefern der Verein nach Meinung der Mitglieder zu bekämpfende Anglizismen definiert. Innerhalb des Vereins gibt es dazu keine einheitliche Linie. Der Verein versteht sich selbst als Bürgerinitiative und nicht als akademischer Zirkel. Die Mitglieder des VDS wollen nicht als Puristen angesehen werden, doch sie verfolgen sprachreinigende Ziele. Es wird dargelegt, dass der Verein durchaus als puristische Vereinigung zu sehen ist, da Argumente und Einstellungen des puristischen Diskurses, der viele Jahre in Deutschland als nicht mehr vorhanden betrachtet worden war, wieder aufgenommen wurden und die Debatte um Anglizismen neu belebt haben. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Untersuchung dokumentieren, dass sich der VDS durch eine sehr aktive Öffentlichkeits- und Vereinsarbeit auszeichnet. Dadurch dürfte sich die Vorreiterrolle des VDS als Anglizismengegner mittlerweile noch gefestigt haben. Nicht zu Unrecht gilt er als Speerspitze der Anglizismenkritik. Dass die Arbeit des VDS mittel- oder langfristig Spuren hinterlässt ist anzunehmen. Wichtiger aber ist, dass er über das Echo, das seine Arbeit in den Medien findet, relativ großen Einfluss auf die öffentliche Diskussion ausübt.
