Objective. The article focuses on the current state of library web content accessibility. Methods. 56 library websites of different countries (27 digital libraries and 29 specialized library ...resources for people with disabilities) have been successfully tested for the compliance with the WCAG 2.1 standards using the Webaccessibility.com service. Using the Alexa.com service the comparative analysis of the websites traffic ranking has been additionally conducted. Results. It has been established that only 3 websites out of 56 meet the accessibility standards of WCAG 2.1 with the compliance score of 92%. Conclusions. It has been concluded that the libraries' current practices of providing web content accessibility are insufficient. The emphasis has been placed on the need to optimize and promote specialized library resources and to implement a continuous audit of web content accessibility by means of automatic testing and engaging users with disabilities into these processes.
Digital library is no longer considered a lavish use of technology but rather a mandatory need for users, especially postgraduate students. Each year, public and academic libraries invest a lot of ...money to subscribe to various digital resources, such as online databases, electronic books, electronic journals, and electronic magazines. However, many of these organizations have difficulties justifying their digital library investment due to lack of usage among the users. This underutilization of digital libraries is credited to the lack of digital library engagement among the users. Digital library engagement is defined as a deep and long-time use of digital library resources. Some researchers equate engagement to usage; however, engagement goes beyond the generic term of usage and may include multiple dimensions such as affective, cognitive, and behavioral. Previous works on the digital library have mostly focused on the generic definition of use instead of engagement. Researchers believe that the lack of study on digital library engagement causes the underutilization of digital libraries' resources. Despite the rising interest in the digital library, no research has studied digital library engagement predictors. Therefore, this paper aims to discuss the predictors of digital library engagement at the conceptual level. A structured literature review methodology was adopted; a total of 135 pieces of literature were included in this study. In total, 30 predictors of digital library engagement were identified, and these predictors were grouped into four factors: technological, individual, organizational, and contextual factors. Grounded on the previous literature on the digital library, the contributions of this paper are as follows: first, this paper identified a list of predictors of digital library engagement from past digital library literature, second, this paper categorized the predictors into four factors, and finally, this paper proposed a conceptual model for further validation of the predictors.
Digital library has the capabilities of storing various electronic information resources which can conveniently be accessed by remote end-users via computer networks and the Internet. In recent ...times, Universities in Nigeria have embarked on integration of technologies in their operations for improvement, especially with respect to digitisation of academic information resources. However, with the huge investment committed to establishment of digital libraries in Nigerian Universities, less research has been done on their acceptance and usage from the users' perspective, more especially with respect to the fit of digital library with students' tasks. This study, therefore, investigated task-technology fit of digital libraries in three Nigerian Universities and identified factors influencing use of digital library by the students. Survey design guided the study and a questionnaire was used to collect data from 402 students. The study found a high usage of digital library among the students. A moderate positive correlation and significant relationship was found between the independent variables (task characteristics, technology characteristics, attitude, computer self-efficacy and task-technology fit) and use of digital library. The study validates the TTF model which posits that for an information system to be utilised, it must be a good fit for the tasks it supports.
Development of a digital library demands extensive financial, human, and technological investments. Appropriate models and measurement tools are required to achieve the goals of these libraries to ...assess them. This research was conducted with the aim of developing and validating a tool to measure the maturity of a digital library based on the “digital library maturity model” (DLMM). Two sources including literature and experts' opinion were used to determine the criteria for each code. Expert opinion and confirmatory factor analysis were used to confirm the content and construct validity of the developed tool, respectively. The reliability of the designed tool was examined by the Cronbach's alpha test. Finally, the designed tool validity and reliability were confirmed. Managers of digital libraries can use this tool to understand the maturity level of their digital libraries and plan to improve the library or to attain advanced levels of maturity.
•This tool is based on the five-level Capability Maturity Model (CMM).•Digital library maturity tool was designed and validated with 39 constructs and 120 criteria.•The findings showed that the load factor of most constructs and criteria is in a high level.•The tool designed to measure the maturity of digital libraries has validity and reliability.
As part of the author’s archive, Giono’s physical library is a source of extratextual information that should be taken into account for the interpretation of his late novels, particularly in regards ...to his sociopolitical views. The volumes containing the reading marks represents, in fact, an intertextual context for the novels, and the presence of numerous political works contrasts with the authorial image associated with a disengagement starting from the end of Second World War. Within the digitalization pipeline, which aims at the publication of the digital edition on the web of a selected number of political texts, the present article focusses on the extraction of machine-readable text from the image files, describing how the transcription process is carried out automatically by the creation and application of a HTR model with Transkribus. We will provide a description of the ground-truth material inserted, the parameters set and the training of the model, the results of multiple trainings as well as examples of the transcriptions. The resulting model is ready to be used for future transcriptions, enabling the efficient digitalization of a great number of volumes from the author’s library as well as other documents from his archive.
•Selecting keywords as analysis object is important but lesser-noticed in bibliometrics.•Keywords should be investigated based on their status both inside and outside the domain.•The Keyword Activity ...Index is utilized to identify topical emphasis of a domain.•The keywords selected by TF, TF-IDF, and TF-KAI are evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively.•TF-KAI performs better in selecting publication keywords for domain analysis.
Publication keywords have been widely utilized to reveal the knowledge structure of research domains. An important but under-addressed problem is the decision of which keywords should be retained as analysis objects after a great number of keywords are gathered from domain publications. In this paper, we discuss the problems with the traditional term frequency (TF) method and introduce two alternative methods: TF-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) and TF-Keyword Activity Index (TF-KAI). These two methods take into account keyword discrimination by considering their frequency both in and out of the domain. To test their performance, the keywords they select in China's Digital Library domain are evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The evaluation results show that the TF-KAI method performs the best: it can retain keywords that match expert selection much better and reveal the research specialization of the domain with more details.
