This research explores lecturers' perceptions of digital libraries as a learning resource for the industrial era 4.0 that can be used anytime and anywhere to solve the low interest in developing ...lecturers because of the difficulty of accessing references to conventional libraries, which require lecturers to visit the library building. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 lecturers, and data analysis was performed using thematic analysis. The analysis results found four main themes: benefits, challenges, recommendations, and positive and negative impacts of digital libraries. The research concluded that the existence of a digital library can make it easy for lecturers to browse the references needed quickly, easily, and flexibly just by entering the library's website page. This research contributes to solving the problem of lecturers in Indonesia over the limited learning resources in conventional libraries that are difficult to access online and require particular visiting time because they have to come directly during library operating hours. Therefore, support from the government, university leaders, and the wider community is needed to develop a digital library system to facilitate lecturers in Indonesia having adequate learning resources for the industrial era 4.0.
At the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Library (JCDL) 2019 held in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA, four researchers organized a panel named “Creation of a Digital Library by the Communities and ...for the Communities.” The goal of this panel was to initiate a collaborative relationship between the DL community and ACM DL. The panelists understood that the collaboration can happen on a much wide range of topics, including publication policy, open access models, curation of published artifacts, etc. Therefore, this panel focused its discussion around the tools and functions which the community wants to see in ACM DL, and which they could help to develop.
Cilj. Cilj je rada prikazati projekt izgradnje zavičajne digitalne knjižnice Primorsko-goranske županije, čiji je pokretač i koordinator Gradska knjižnica Rijeka a koji predstavlja logičan nastavak ...funkcionalnog povezivanja narodnih i školskih knjižnica na području Primorsko-goranske županije.
Pristup/metodologija. Projekt se provodi kroz više faza. U prvoj fazi uspostavljen je zajednički repozitorij na platformi INDIGO. Potom su migrirane datoteke i metapodaci iz SVeVID-a, digitalne knjižnice Gradske knjižnice Rijeka iz sustava OMEKA u novi sustav sa složenijim metamodelom. U isti repozitorij postavljena je i digitalna knjižnica Gradske knjižnice i čitaonice Mali Lošinj koja je imala digitaliziranu građu pripremljenu za objavu na platformi INDIGO. U drugoj fazi migrirani su podaci i datoteke, također iz sustava OMEKA, digitalnih zbirki Gradske knjižnice Crikvenica i Gradske knjižnice i čitaonice „Viktor Car Emin“ Opatija te su dorađene funkcionalnosti samoga Portala. Paralelno se u repozitorij postavlja postojeća digitalizirana zavičajna periodika Gradske knjižnice Rijeka, kao i ostala, u međuvremenu digitalizirana, građa. U budućim fazama postupno će se digitalizirati i objaviti na Portalu vrijedna zavičajna građa pohranjena u narodnim i školskim knjižnicama Primorsko-goranske županije.
Rezultati. Uspostavljen je portal Zavičajna digitalna knjižnica Primorsko-goranske županije, odnosno digitalni repozitorij na platformi INDIGO koja omogućuje pohranu i standardiziranu obradu građe te njezinu prezentaciju, kao i izradu dodatnih sadržaja. Svaka knjižnica uključena u projekt ima svoju stranicu na Portalu, uz mogućnost pretraživanja sadržaja cjelokupnog repozitorija ili isključivo sadržaja obuhvaćenog digitalnom zbirkom određene knjižnice. Osim baštinskog dijela, Portal sadrži i informativni dio koji obuhvaća glasila jedinica lokalne i područne samouprave koje Gradska knjižnica Rijeka prima kao županijski obvezni primjerak, a za koje je dobivena suglasnost za objavu od nositelja autorskih prava.
Originalnost/vrijednost. Projekt „Zavičajna digitalna knjižnica Primorsko-goranske županije“ po svom je pristupu inovativan jer je ciljani obuhvat cjelokupna nadležnost županijske matične narodne knjižnice gdje se u istom repozitoriju nalazi više digitalnih knjižnica različitih ustanova te može poslužiti kao model za slične projekte u drugim sredinama.

The essential component of scientific discourse is the publication of knowledge in stringent lines of arguments. Digital libraries curate these publications in extensive collections and must provide ...effective access paths to them. However, searching for arguments with keywords is often not precise enough. In close cooperation between the University Library and the Institute for Information Systems at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, a narrative service is being developed in the Specialized Information Service Pharmacy (in German Fachinformationsdienst Pharmazie) to provide a precise and variable-based search for targeted lines of arguments in scientific literature. The service will be integrated into the central service - the drug-centered search platform PubPharm (www.pubpharm.de). The narrative service offers a precise search for lines of arguments by allowing users to formulate their queries as relationships between pharmaceutical entities (such as active ingredients, diseases, targets). For example, pharmaceutical mechanisms can be formulated and precisely searched. In addition, the service supports placeholders in the queries that allow users to explore their research field. For example, the service can visualize all drug-disease relationships with associated literature in a structured representation. The narrative service requires a pre-processing of documents, i.e., annotating pharmaceutical entities and extracting relationships between them. The pharmaceutical community is currently evaluating the narrative service. In this paper, we present the technique of our narrative service and discuss its transferability to other domains of various disciplines.
Academic digital libraries are getting more benefit from the Web possibilities to help with teaching, learning and research activities. Because of it, more and more people use the services that they ...offer. Therefore, it is very important that the academic digital libraries provide a good service in order to satisfy the users’ expectations. The aim of this paper is to present a decision support system assisting the staff of the academic digital libraries to make decisions in order to meet the users’ needs and, in such a way, to increase the number of users utilizing them. To do so, the decision support system is composed of several decision rules which generate recommendations according to both objective and subjective criteria to improve the quality of the services offered by the academic digital libraries.
The purpose of this study is to present an exhaustive analysis on research paper recommender systems which have become very popular and gained a lot of research attention. Though the major focus is ...on developing new recommendation algorithms, other research dimensions are left untouched. Renown recommendation classes include content-based approaches, collaborative filtering, link-based algorithms, co-occurrence based approaches, global relevance and hybrid methods. These approaches mainly differ in background knowledge and modes of user behavior analysis. For instance, content-based filtering uses paper descriptions which are mostly word-based features. Collaborative filtering makes predictions based on peers’ interests. Link-based algorithms utilize academic associations that exist between different entities in academia. Co-occurrence based techniques incorporate event occurrences to locate related papers. Global relevance adopts a ‘one-for-all’ policy for recommending popular articles. Hybrid methods combine the above approaches to design efficient algorithms. We have reviewed articles implementing several versions of these classes, however minor customizations make it difficult to categorize the new methods to one of the base classes. We have defined the concept of ‘background knowledge and operating principle’ for proper classification and to make a clear distinction among the recommendation approaches. We have used a combination of systematic literature review, critical review, and conceptual review to conduct this survey which presents current advancements in the field and discusses popular recommendation approaches. This paper reveals the factors affecting users’ behavior and introduces a taxonomy of knowledge acquisition sources. Moreover, various evaluation methods and important performance criteria are explored. Finally, this paper examines the research trends and reports major loopholes in current research to foster the development of efficacious recommender systems.
This article proposes an analysis of Spanish chapbook literature from the digital perspective. It provides a systematic study of the metadata and services selected by seventeen digital libraries to ...model their collections.In the first part, we propose an overview of those libraries. Their great variety reflects the heterogeneity of this popular literature, which is at the margin of studies on printed productions, and escapes the classifications traditionally used for books. In the second part, we describe four different strategies used by digital libraries to model this type of content, focusing either 1) on the document as an archive to be preserved, 2) on the document as the result of an editorial process, 3) on the text, or 4) on the illustrations. Our objective is thus to outline a digital model for these types of documents and to help future projects in defining their own offer of services.This article is part of the research project "Untangling the cordel / Démêler le cordel / Desenrollando el cordel (2020-2023)" financed by the Philanthropic Sandoz-Monique de Meuron Family Foundation and directed by the professor Constance Carta (University of Geneva).Cet article propose une analyse de la littérature de colportage espagnole au prisme du numérique, en étudiant de manière systématique les métadonnées et les services sélectionnés par dix-sept bibliothèques numériques pour modéliser leurs collections.Dans un premier temps, nous proposons un panorama de ces bibliothèques, dont la grande variété reflète celle de cette littérature populaire, à la marge des études sur les productions imprimées et qui échappe aux classifications traditionnellement employées pour le livre. Dans un second temps, nous décrivons quatre stratégies différentes employées par les bibliothèques numériques pour modéliser ce type de contenus, en mettant l’accent soit sur le document en tant qu’archives à conserver, soit sur le document en tant que résultat d’un processus éditorial, soit sur le texte, soit sur l’illustration. Extensive Reading (ER) is described as an individual’s voluntary and unrestricted reading of huge amounts of material or long texts for the sake of general comprehension and pleasure from the ...content. Digital libraries offer rich content and ample digital aids that student may get benefit while reading independently. These aids can help, encourage, and motivate children because of the digital additions that traditional books lack. They may be able to make reading books more entertaining for children by using bright animations and introducing them to print and pictures in an enjoyable way. Accordingly, the present research aims to examine the attitudes of private primary schools’ students towards an extensive reading program in digital library. A qualitative research methodology was selected to reveal the perceptions and preferences of the students. The collected data analysed through thematic analysis. The research participants are 10 students from grade 5 and 6 in a private primary school. This study might be useful for instructors to see how students react extensive reading program in digital library and technological features embedded to it, as well as curriculum designers to think about the impact of digital libraries on students’ reading habit development.
