Much recent scholarly investigation has been focused on the promise of digitalization and the new ways of working and organizing it makes possible. In this paper, we analyze how the COVID-19 pandemic ...has acted as a natural breaching experiment that has challenged taken-for-granted expectations about digitalization and revealed four important issues: uneven access to digital infrastructures, the persistence of the analog in digitalization, the brittleness of unchecked digitalization, and panoptical surveillance. The sudden shift to digital work has exposed taken-for-granted assumptions about the universality of digital access. The crisis has also revealed that many highly digitalized processes still rely on analog elements. The pandemic has also exposed that many algorithms used in digitalized inter-organizational processes are brittle due to overreliance on historic patterns. Finally, the pandemic has breached fundamental expectations of privacy when organizational surveillance was extended into private and public spaces. Thus, the pandemic has laid bare fundamental challenges in digitalization and has exposed the limits of rose‑tinted thinking about the relation between technology and organizing.
•The pandemic has laid bare fundamental challenges in digitalization.•The pandemic exposes the limits of upbeat thinking about the relation between technology and organizing.•The pandemic acts as a natural breaching experiment that foregrounds often backgrounded issues with digitalization.•Issues include uneven access, the persistence of the analog, the brittleness of digitalization, and panoptical surveillance.•We suggest how researchers, policy makers, and practitioners can fruitfully engage with disruptions in digitalization.

Despite the demonstrated opportunities for revenue enhancement through digitalization, companies often experience a digitalization paradox. This paradox suggests that although companies may invest in ...digitalization, they often fail to achieve the expected revenue enhancement. In reporting research on 52 companies, we make the following four contributions: First, we focus on industrial companies in the business-to-business context, which largely have been neglected in previous research on digitalization. Second, we introduce the digitalization paradox as an important phenomenon in the discussion of revenue enhancement through digitalization. Third, we describe three growth paths: (1) commercializing digital solutions, (2) utilizing product connectivity, and (3) establishing an IoT-platform-based application business. For each growth path, the article takes a dynamic perspective on business models, highlighting triggers and modifications in business-model components (including value proposition, value-creation activities, and profit equation). Fourth, while the described modifications require initial investments to let these growth paths develop, we highlight how growth traps can prevent investments in business-model modifications from leading to revenue enhancement and how they can ultimately lead to the digitalization paradox.

Blockchain is projected to be the latest revolutionary technology and is gaining increasing attention from academics and practitioners. Blockchain is essentially a distributed and immutable database ...that enables more efficient and transparent transactions. The consensus-based record validation can eliminate the need for a trusted intermediary. We utilize the transaction cost theory to create a better understanding of how blockchain might influence supply chain relations, specifically in terms of transaction costs and governance decisions. Conceptually developing a set of six propositions, we argue that blockchain limits opportunistic behavior, the impact of environmental and behavioral uncertainty. Blockchain reduces transaction costs, as it allows for transparent and valid transactions. We explore several areas for future research on how blockchain might shape supply chain management in the future.
•Digitalization influences supply chain practice, and should therefore be integrated as a new boundary condition in PSM research.•Blockchain technology influences the prediction of governance structures in the supply chain.•Blockchain technology limits opportunistic behavior, environmental and behavioral uncertainty.•Blockchain application reduces transaction costs and enables more market-oriented governance structures.
•This special issue explores the intersection of corruption, digitalization, and international business.•This paper fills research gaps by integrating theoretical perspectives.•The theoretical ...contributions are distinguished by their focus on both macro- and micro-level impacts.
This perspective paper, including the role of an editorial, systematically reviews extant studies on ‘multinational corporations’ corruption’ and ‘digitalization’ in the international business (IB) domain, revealing why this special issue is both timely and necessary. We chronologically identify recent key studies that have been influential in the research on corruptive practices and digitalization in IB, and examine their main findings. We find that interdisciplinary research simultaneously exploring corruptive practices and digitalization is still in its infancy, and while some contributions have been made, there is still a large research vacuum. In addition, we introduce the twelve papers chosen for this special issue, which we believe represent meaningful breakthroughs and offer useful academic implications. We conclude by suggesting invaluable paths for future research to extend our understanding of the theme.
