The use of exonyms is one of the earliest challenges faced by experts who deal with geographical names on an international level. The prevalent view is that exonyms hinder international communication ...and their use should therefore be reduced. Another opinion is that exonyms are a constituent part of the vocabulary of the linguistic community that creates and uses them, an important part of cultural heritage and identity, and should therefore not be overlooked. Recently, the idea that a middle ground should be found is gaining traction; according to it, exonyms should be used differently depending on the users’ age groups, the purpose of the publication they appear in, and the type of communication (international or national). Following this view, members of the UNGEGN Working Group on Exonyms have reached conclusions regarding the globally shared characteristics of exonyms and the criteria of their use. Three criteria are related to the characteristics of the geographical features for which the exonym is used (type, size, importance, familiarity, and location). Qualitative analysis of the number and distribution of Croatian exonyms in several categories shows that the use of Croatian exonyms is in accordance with these criteria. This means that exonyms are used: a) when a geographical feature has close and traditional ties with the Croatian linguistic community – most commonly features that are geographically nearby; b) when the feature is historically or currently important, globally and/or for Croatian language speakers; c) when the feature covers more than one speaking area.
In this paper, the treatment of demonyms, ktetics, and exonyms in the more recent print and online sources of the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics is described. In the introductory part ...of the paper, the question of which of the forms of the demonyms and ktetics are appropriate for use in standard Croatian is discussed, and steps toward a new definition for exonyms are taken. In the body of the paper, the method for the treatment of demonyms, ktetics and exonyms in the Školski rječnik hrvatskog jezika (Scholastic Dictionary of Croatian Language) and the Baza etnika i ktetika (Database of demonyms and ktetics) is shown
.
U središnjemu se dijelu rada prikazuje način obradbe etnika, ktetika i egzonima u Školskome rječniku hrvatskoga jezika i Bazi etnika i ktetika.
After the well-received Croatian Exonyms I: Names of Countries, Capitals and People, published in 2016, the Miroslav Krleža Lexicographical Institute published Croatian Exonyms II: List of ...Contemporary and Historical Exonyms at the end of 2018. Its 295 pages in Croatian present an exhaustive inventory of all geographical objects (countries, towns, dependent regions, regions, rivers, mountains, lakes, settlements, seas, oceans, bays, etc.) with recommendations on how to spell them. Expertly and thoroughly prepared, and based on relevant sources ranging over a period of 130 years (atlases, geographical monographs, encyclopaedias and lexicons), this book contains 3,023 adapted geographical names. It is hard-bound and measures 25.5 × 18 cm. Its ISBN is 978-953-268-048-5 and it was printed in Zagreb.
Departing from the assumption that exonyms, in the sense of »names used in a specific language for a geographical feature situated outside the area where that
language is spoken and differing in its ...form from the name used in an official
or well-established language of the area where the geographical feature is situated«
(UN Glossary definition 2007), are indicators of external historical as well as
current political, cultural, and economic relations of a community, the article
investigates the case of Croatian exonyms as documented by the recently
published editions of Ivana Crljenko (2016, 2018). For comparison,
(Austrian-)German, Hungarian and Italian exonyms are also examined in this respect.
In essence, the assumption is found to also be confirmed by the Croatian case,
although several linguistic factors distort the picture. The article also
reveals the weaknesses of the current UN Glossary definitions of the terms
»exonym« and »endonym«.
kulturnih i ekonomskih odnosa pojedine zajednice, članak istražuje slučaj
hrvatskih egzonima zabilježenih u recentnim izdanjima Ivane Crljenko (2016,
mađarski i talijanski egzonimi.
