The transformational potential of 3D printing within the manufacturing industry has been widely recognized. However, its widespread adoption faces significant practical challenges that extend beyond ...the technology itself, encompassing political, economic, social, and technical (PEST) factors. This research investigates the external variables impacting the successful implementation of 3D printing and proposes strategies to overcome these barriers. Through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM), we identified key external factors, including governmental regulations, economic conditions, societal acceptance, and technical readiness, that significantly influence the success of 3D printing deployment. Notably, addressing technological barriers emerged as a crucial factor. To address these implementation challenges, we recommend increased public awareness and stakeholder participation. Our findings indicate that these strategies can enhance the prospects of 3D printing adoption. These results hold significant implications for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers in the 3D printing industry. Understanding and mitigating external obstacles are critical for harnessing the benefits of 3D printing within a dynamic environment. This research sheds light on the multifaceted challenges surrounding 3D printing implementation, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to overcome these hurdles.

This work examines how micro and small technology-based companies and micro and small metalworking companies that operate in sectors with different levels of uncertainty and technological obsolescence conduct the monitoring of their surrounding environment and employ sources of information to detect any external changes in these settings. The research method followed a qualitative approach, using information collected through interviews. Results show that environmental monitoring in all the studied companies was carried out informally. Besides, the main variables used to monitor the external environment were driven by economic, political, legal, or competitive interests. This work contributes to the literature on strategic management in micro and small companies by comparing and indicating how managers monitor their companies’ external environment through external variables and obtain information from external and internal information sources.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the moderating influence of the external environment on the relationship between entrepreneurial competencies, entrepreneurial orientation, ...entrepreneurial network, government business support and SMEs performance. The objectives of the study are achieved using the resource-based view and dynamic capability theory.Design/methodology/approachThe survey method of research was used by personally administering questionnaires to the respondents. Multistage sampling techniques are used in selecting 470 SMEs owners/managers that participated in the survey. SPSS 24 and PLS-SEM 3.0 were used in the analysis of the data.FindingsIn the Nigerian context, the findings indicated that EC, EO and GBS directly influence the SMEs performance. Surprisingly, SMEs performance is not influenced by EN. Similarly, EE significantly moderated the relationship between EC, GBS and SMEs performance. On the contrary, EE does not have any moderating influence on the relationship between EO, EN and SMEs performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is limited to northeastern Nigeria. The study is limited to the EC, EO, EN GBS EE and SMEs performance and the use of cross-sectional data. The findings imply that SMEs owners/managers need a high level of entrepreneurial competencies and government business support to achieve a better performance especially in an external environment that is characterised by dynamism, diversity, complexity and hostility. Hence, providing support for both RBV and DCT.Practical implicationsThus, the study offers additional empirical evidence from Nigeria and also expands knowledge and understanding in this field. The findings offer owners/managers, government agencies, financial institutions and other stakeholders of SMEs strategies EC, EO, GBS and EE to achieve a better SMEs performance.Originality/valueThe conceptual framework of the study is unique, and the study was conducted in northeastern Nigeria which is grossly underrepresented in the literature. It also provided understanding on the moderating influence of EE on the framework.
Purpose Innovation is considered as an important tool to succeed and survive in periods of great uncertainty such as COVID-19 crisis. This paper aims to empirically examine the propensity to engage ...in product, process and organizational innovation under uncertainty among small and medium enterprises and how that propensity varies depending on the gender of the manager. Design/methodology/approach Using the results of 213 responses by managers of Armenian small and medium enterprises in the scope of GLOBE-2020 survey, the authors investigate the role of manager’s gender in encouraging innovative attitude under uncertainty. To measure the relationship between uncertainty and innovation (product, process and organizational), Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated between managers’ perception about the uncertainty and their perceptions of innovation within their companies compared to the players in the external environment. In addition, a linear regression was run between the three innovation types and uncertainty. Findings The results of our analysis confirmed the positive relationship between uncertainty and innovation. Moreover, our results indicate that male managers have a higher tendency to undertake innovation under external turbulence. Originality/value This study fills the gap in the literature by studying the relationship between uncertainty and innovation, focusing on SMEs during adversarial times, which in contrast to bigger companies are limited in terms of their resources and, hence, capacity to innovate. The paper examines the gender dimension as an internal factor affecting innovation under uncertainty in an under-researched country context of Armenia, where female entrepreneurs deal with unique challenges to engage in innovative activities.
The starting point from which we began our research was that many companies around the world could not predict and adapt to the new changes taking place in the environment (closure due to the corona ...virus pandemic, war in Ukraine, sanctions against Russia). Through strategic analysis, companies were able to gather information about planned scenarios and based on them, quality decisions could be made. The goal of the research is to point out the importance of strategic analysis, as an important phase in strategic planning, in order to avoid or mitigate all threats that have arisen in the external environment. The paper will present methods and techniques, with which management will collect data, all with the aim of making timely decisions. The methods we used for the work are: analysis and synthesis. The results of the research show us that if companies master these methods and techniques of strategic management on the one hand and have quality management on the other hand, they can largely predict the emergence of potential threats from the external environment. To avoid crisis situations, it is necessary for every company to incorporate crisis management within its organization.
Modern business conditions are determined by uncertainty, rapid change and business in a dynamic and turbulent business environment. It is clear that the environment has an impact on the business of ...the enterprise, but the enterprise also has some influence on the environment. In this context, it is very important to conduct a strategic analysis of the environment that we divide into internal and external. External environment analysis refers to the analysis of opportunities and threats, while the internal analysis focuses on the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the company. In this paper the emphasis is placed on the most significant methods for strategic analysis of the businesses most commonly used in practice. By applying these methods, businesses come up with important environmental information that they need when formulating a business strategy. Adequate strategic analysis of the environment is the basis for successful business and survival of a company in the market
A network consisting of two populations of phase oscillators with heterogeneous intra- and inter-population couplings is known to be the simplest model for a chimera state. In this work, we ...generalize this chimera model by adding the indirect interaction through an external environment in the coupling scheme. The dynamical external environment is driven by the contributions from all oscillators in both populations and then it acts as a controller on the two-population chimera system. We show that a variety of symmetry-broken states including the chimera could emerge as a unique attractor due to the indirect interaction via an environment. Moreover, different states, ranging from the incoherence to the uniform drift, non-uniform drift, chimera and coherent states, can effectively be switched by adjusting the indirect coupling strength. We report on exotic behaviors such as the so-called inclined coherence, which corresponds to an intermediate state between the coherent and π-coherent states, as well as the cluster-coherent and alternating drift states as new types of symmetry breakings. To explain the mechanisms under these phase transitions between different collective behaviors, we reduce our model in the continuum limit to a low-dimensional system by applying the Ott–Antonsen approach and present stability diagrams on the basis of analyzing the reduced system. It is demonstrated numerically that the self-emerging chimera states persist for the small-size systems as well.
•Two-population chimera model is generalized by adding an indirect interaction.•Different symmetry-broken states could emerge as a unique attractor.•Inclined coherent, cluster-coherent and alternating drift states are newly reported.
•Factors impacting risky driving behaviors of bus drivers are systematically assessed.•Enterprise management and external environment are related to bus drivers’ safety attitudes.•Factors in the ...study are related to bus drivers’ risky driving behaviors in China.•Recommended measures to improve the bus drivers’ safety attitudes are put forward.
Several studies have shown that enterprise management (e.g. culture, salary) and external environment (e.g. traffic congestion) predict risky driving behaviors and accident involvement. However, this process has not been systematically investigated in bus drivers. The present study uses structural equation model to assess whether enterprise management and external environment are associated with risky self-reported driving behaviors both directly and indirectly, through the effects of attitudes towards traffic safety in a large sample of bus drivers.
Three hundred and thirty-one bus drivers (mean age = 39.5, SD = 5.6 years) completed a structured and anonymous questionnaire measuring enterprise management, external environment, attitudes toward traffic safety, and self-reported risky driving behaviors (i.e., speeding, fatigue driving, running the light) in the last 6 months. Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that enterprise management, and external environment were associated with risky driving behaviors both directly and indirectly. In particular both of them were directly correlated with bus drivers’ attitudes toward traffic safety which, in turn, were related to the five types of self-reported risky driving behaviors. The present findings suggest that measures related to the impact factors could be carried out to reduce the probabilities of the risky driving behaviors among bus drivers, such as improving the salary level of bus drivers, setting up bus lanes and priority signals to alleviate road congestion, optimizing shift schedules, implementing effective safety education, etc. These findings can provide the empirical basis for evidence-based road safety interventions in the context of public transport.
