This article is designed to analyze the sexist oppressions experienced by female protagonists in Anthology Short Story Arab Women Writer translated by Dayla Cohen-Mor, the sexist socializations in the short stories as well as their responses towards the sexism. In analyzing this data, the writers scrutinize ten short stories selected and apply feminist theory: from margin to center by bell hooks (1984). The result imparts that sexism is socialized through behaviour and culture in society.

The article deals with a Pernambuco educator who contributed significantly to the Pernambuco educational scenario in the 1950s, by participating in the training of countless children and young ...people, founding schools, and acting as a teacher and manager in both primary and secondary education. The objective was to write a biography of Eglantine do Rêgo Barros, emphasizing her collaboration in the foundation of the Colégio Estadual de Olinda. Theoretically supported by the assumptions of cultural history, the study chooses Oral History as its research methodology. The oral sources were collected through interviews with former teachers, former employees, and former students of the Colégio Estadual de Olinda, as well as with the sister of the biographer, then they were intertwined with documentary sources, such as school documents, news reports and personal documents. The results showed that the biographer was responsible for the foundation of the first public secondary education establishment in the city of Olinda, of which she was director. As the manager of the Colégio Estadual de Olinda, she gained prominence because the college became an establishment recognized for its quality. The good schooling paid for with resources from her family, which had social prestige, and the political contacts she developed, in addition to her dedication and commitment to education, was crucial for the biography to gain respect and recognition in Pernambuco.
O artigo trata de uma educadora pernambucana que colaborou significativamente para o cenário educacional pernambucano na década de 1950, ao participar da formação de inúmeras crianças e jovens, fundar escolas e atuar como professora e gestora tanto no ensino primário como secundário. O objetivo foi biografar Eglantine do Rêgo Barros com ênfase na sua colaboração para a fundação do Colégio Estadual de Olinda. Amparado teoricamente nos pressupostos da História Cultural, o estudo elege a História Oral como metodologia de pesquisa. As fontes orais foram coletadas mediante entrevistas com ex-professores, ex-funcionários e ex-alunos do Colégio Estadual de Olinda, bem como com a irmã da biografada; em seguida, foram entrecruzadas com fontes documentais, a exemplo de documentos escolares, reportagem e documentos pessoais. Os resultados demonstraram que a biografada foi a responsável pela fundação do primeiro estabelecimento público de ensino secundário do município de Olinda, no qual foi diretora. Como gestora do Colégio Estadual de Olinda, ganhou destaque, porque o colégio transformou-se em estabelecimento reconhecido pela sua qualidade. A boa escolarização custeada com recursos da sua família, que detinha prestígio social, e os contatos políticos desenvolvidos, somados à sua dedicação e compromisso com a educação, foram preponderantes para que a biografada conquistasse respeito e reconhecimento em Pernambuco.
When a movie is remade the primary story changes in order to reflect the social norms of a new audience. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) and Far From Heaven (2002) are replicas of the original film ...All That Heaven Allows from 1955. Each film tackles different issues with the female as the protagonist. Social class, race and homosexuality are at the core of these three films. In this paper, I will discuss all three films and interject how the heroine discovers herself and why she needs to evolve. As each heroine finds herself, she strives to break the monotony that society has constructed for her and by breaking free she discovers what she has been looking for on her own terms. Societal structures barricade our protagonist by creating obstacles for her to move through, like class differences, racial bigotry and love. The female’s journey will be looked at through a critical analysis of each film including its production design, score and lighting. Feminist film theory will help us understand how these generations look at female characters on film. In the next decade, this film may be told through a completely different filter based on the societal norms of what that generation is facing.
The paper analyzes the legacy of the female protagonist in the novels Nečista krv by Borisav Stankovic, Petrijin venac by Dragoslav Mihailovic, and Ako dugo gledaš u ponor by Enes Halilovic. The ...author seeks to determine what are the common elements in the construction of the character of the protagonist in all three novels, that is, what functional and symbolic advantages are shown in this author’s decision. Also, by analyzing material that spans over a century, linked by the narrator’s main focus (the female protagonist), we will try to identify the connections these literary works have with the poetics of the epoch in which they originate, but also with the socio-political turmoil and shifts that are reflected in them.
This article examines the ongoing superhero webcomic Strong Female Protagonist (2012-present) by Brannon Lee Mulligan and Molly Ostertag and employs it as a case study to analyse the new ...communications circuit created by the digital production and delivery of comics. It adopts a perspective drawn from Book History to frame the communication model of print comics and to evaluate how webcomics such as Strong Female Protagonist redefine the role of readers, authors and publishers.
Three bestsellers published in the last ten years – Twilight (2005), The Hunger Games (2008) and Fifty Shades of Grey (2011) – present an impressive deal of violence against the female body, a fact ...that demands investigation considering it may shape their readers’ views on this. Therefore, this work aims at analyzing the discourses on violence against the female protagonist’s body through the study of linguistic features in extracts from those three books. The analysis is done under the light of Critical Discourse Analysis, verifying the discourses embedded in this violence and the repercussions these discourses may have in terms of perpetuating gender stereotypes, especially in literature. More specifically, the focus of this study is on the “justifications” for the violence against women and if these justifications come from and/or consolidate hegemonic ways of thinking regarding this subject.
Part of a special issue devoted to the centenary of the Film Institute VGIK this article is devoted to the history of the creation of the film The Young Guard (1948) by the famed Soviet director ...Sergei Gerasimov. The director was able to turn the work on the film into a grand artistic experiment. He managed to synthesize the educational process (his own acting-directing course at the Film Institute VGIK), the theatrical tradition (performances in the Theatre of Film Actors), and film production (in the film studio Soyuzdetfilm). Particular attention is paid to an analysis of the phenomenon of The Young Guard, its rapid transformation from the historical fact of the national tragedy of World War II to the artistic image in Aleksandr Fadeev's novel and Gerasimov's film, and then to the sociopolitical myth that answers the request for a discourse on power.

The following article analyses the passage of Kālidāsa’s Raghuvaṃśa 16.4–24. The focus is on the image of a dying city—how it is portrayed and what makes Kālidāsa’s depiction so distinctive. The ...author’s main interest is in the role of the female characters in the description: who they are, why they and their activities are chosen to serve as a mirror reflecting the city condition. The importance of Śrī and her connection to female citizens and the city itself is analysed. Also the relation of “ masculinity” and “femininity” and the role it plays in the process of deconstructing/reconstructing the city and the reality is analysed. Next, the article briefly deals with the relation between the real and unreal in the text, how they interplay and what the role of narrating the story and retelling the reality for the above-mentioned process of city deconstruction/reconstruction is. The Sanskrit text translation is given in the appendix.
