This article examines historical changes in naming practices through first names in a region of Argentina with a history of migration from Northern Europe. First names in a migrant family are used as ...a case study and different periods compared. The data show the use of Nordic names in the first generations, with a drastic change towards Hispanic first names from the third generation onwards. Also hybrid naming practices that combine both Nordic, Hispanic and other names are noted. The results show how first names in Misiones have shifted over time due to changes in the community and Argentinian policies, and how these practices reflect political and ideological stances.
The subject of the paper are male two-word first names registered in the population census of the Republic of Croatia conducted in 2011. Among approximately 5600 different first names with more than ...ten bearers registered that year we found 150 two-word first names. First the statistical data of the entire corpus of two-word first names are presented, and then the attention is paid to male two-word first names (N = 71). It is determined which male two-word first names had the most bearers and which of their components were the most frequent. The corpus is then analyzed from a linguistic point of view. In classifying the examples, the criterion of component combinations is applied (first attention is paid to the linguistic origin and then to the onomastic definition of the first name, which is more precise). Some peculiarities of the registered first names are also highlighted (e.g., the types of links between components are determined, etc.).
What are the origins of national identity? We investigate the success of propaganda as one the first nation-building policies conducted in the German lands around 1815. To elicit identity changes at ...the level of individuals we use data on first names across German cities and villages. To validate the approach of using first names, we show that soldiers with national names had a higher likelihood to be honored for bravery during the German-French War. Exploiting unanticipated border changes together with variation within the same families over time, i.e., family fixed effects, we find that parents in treated cities responded by choosing national (rather than ruler) first names for their children. We do not find a corresponding increase in villages suggesting that national identity was more prevalent among the urban population, in particular the elite, during this period.
•First nation-building policies in German lands in 1815 were successful.•Change in parents’ decision on first names used as proxy for change in social identity.•Unanticipated border changes allow constructing treatment and control group.•Exploiting family fixed effects supports causal identification at individual level.•National identity was more prevalent among urban elites.
This article deals with a topic which has not been researched extensively. It refers to first names of children born over the last decades in North America and aims to show how Romanian immigrants ...chose for their children various types of first names: traditional, international, adapted to the language used across the Atlantic, or specific to the adoptive country.
A simple, four-question survey was drawn up and applied to 56 Romanians who have settled in Canada, the USA, and Martinique over the last decades. It reveals that the integration into the host country is achieved on the social, professional, and educational levels, as well as on the linguistic and onomastic ones. Thus, we can state that first names chosen for children born across the Atlantic are socio- and psycholinguistic markers not only of the attachment to family, cultural, and religious values, but also of the wish to integrate seamlessly into the adoptive society. The reasons behind the anthroponymic choices are related to the parents’ level of education, the size of the community of immigrants, the connection with certain religious, cultural, and educational institutions which can influence the parents’ onomastic decisions. At the same time, ethnic prestige, on the macrosocial level, and self-esteem, on the microsocial level, determine the choice of first names for newborns.
In the present-day Hungarian given name stock, there are probably less than a hundred names of Spanish origin, as interpreted in terms of etymology, intermediary languages and cultural sources. This ...short paper outlines the category of these names, its composition, background and main characteristics, accompanied by relevant examples.
In this paper, I examine a specific linguistic practice in the use of first names for stylistic moves of exclusion, namely the attribution of fictitious first names to individuals or groups. I argue ...that these symbolic acts of naming are instrumental in moves of inclusion and exclusion. I present evidence for this linguistic practice by analyzing the persona Lisa in German student discourse. Based on data from social media platforms, as well as observation data, Lisa emerges as a young, shallow female persona perceived as entitled and annoying. In her incarnation as Lisa aus Australien (Lisa from Australia), Lisa is a gap year returnee who self-styles as mobile and linguistically fluid. I analyze the mediated material that goes into the construction of the social persona of Lisa, and I discuss some of the implications of this kind of social commentary on linguistic mobility. In particular, I argue that the fine detail of the parody – including its gendered trope of the shallow girl – enables the voicing of purist and territorial stances which are at odds with contemporary ideals of cosmopolitanism and mobility, and which point to uneasy debates about eliteness.
•First names are part of sociolinguistic enregisterment through the construction of characterological figures.•Name-based enregisterment coalesces around linguistic, social and semiotic aspects.•Name-based enregisterment provides a discursive space for acts of language policing and linguistic monitoring and thereby enables linguistic practices of inclusion and exclusion.
