U radu je uvodno izložen pristup problematici osobnoga imena u hrvatskoj onomastici i argumentirana pripadnost govora zastupljenih u Rječniku roverskih i okolnih govora Slavka Kalčića, Gorana ...Filipija i Valtera Milovana jugozapadnomu istarskomu dijalektu čakavskoga narječja.
This work explores the possibility of first names as a complex phenomenon in which not only language, but society and culture are involved. Given names are a category of the natural languages in ...which different facets of human beings as sociocultural subjects are intertwined. Not only do such names belong to the language they are expressed in but also, they integrate their bearers into the social and cultural structure of their communities. By understanding speakers as ongoing members of different groups within the community and by integrating their interaction as well as the symbolic constructions that emerge from such interaction, the category can be conceived as the result of a dynamic relation between a set of inseparable heterogeneous elements. Hence, language in use, society and culture cannot be isolated or considered separately as they all become the category. Because of this, both the process of name-giving (which first names come to be used by) and the changing repertory resulting from such a process becomes of great relevance to this endeavour. Taking these into consideration, a model of a complex adaptive system will be presented to propose the category of first name as its emergent property.
We analyze gender differences in immigrants’ ethnic boundary making using the example of name giving. We draw on the well-established finding that immigrants are more likely to choose a name that is ...common in the host country (strategy of boundary crossing) for female than for male descendants. We distinguish between two dimensions that help us to understand the gender gap in naming: the impact of origin-specific factors (institutionalization of gender equality in the country of origin and religious affiliation) and immigrants’ level of integration into the host country. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study on immigrants from 49 countries, we show that both sets of factors have a strong impact on immigrants’ boundary making in naming, as well as on the extent of the difference between daughters and sons: traditional gender role attitudes foster the gender gap in naming, whereas integration into the host country reduces it.
Social scientists increasingly use (big) social media data to illuminate long-standing substantive questions in social science research. However, a key challenge of analyzing such data is their lower ...level of individual detail compared to highly detailed survey data. This limits the scope of substantive questions that can be addressed with these data. In this study, we provide a method to upgrade individual detail in terms of ethnicity in data gathered from social media via the use of register data. Our research aim is twofold: first, we predict the most likely value of ethnicity, given one's first name, and second, we show how one can test hypotheses with the predicted values for ethnicity as an independent variable while simultaneously accounting for the uncertainty in these predictions. We apply our method to social network data collected from Facebook. We illustrate our approach and provide an example of hypothesis testing using our procedure, i.e., estimating the relation between predicted network ethnic homogeneity on Facebook and trust in institutions. In a comparison of our method with two other methods, we find that our method provides the most conservative tests of hypotheses. We discuss the promise of our approach and pinpoint future research directions.
This interdisciplinary study examines how transgender individuals change their names in the course of their gender transition. It reveals the enormous social significance of first names in ...interpersonal communication and managing gender – along with other social differences – thereby showing the close interrelationships between language, law, and society in this realm.
