The real-world challenge of climate change requires sustainable energy transitions. This presents a crisis of accountability legitimated through situated practices in a wide range of cases including: solar energy transitions in Portugal, urban energy transitions in Germany, forestland conflicts in Indonesia, urban carbon emission targets in Norway, transport electrification in the Nordic region, and biodiversity conservation and energy extraction in the USA. By synthesising these cases, chapters identify various dimensions wherein practices of legitimation construct specific accountability relations. This book deftly illustrates the value of an analytical approach focused on accountable governance to enable sustainable energy transitions. It will be of great use to both academics and practitioners working in the field of energy transitions.
Comprendre la forêt, c'est aussi comprendre la société. De tout temps, la forêt a constitué un remarquable atout de développement économique. Désormais, face au réchauffement climatique, au ...développement démographique et grâce aux avancées scientifiques, la forêt est devenue un enjeu d'avenir de première importance. Pour appréhender les forêts du futur, il convient de connaître et de comprendre les forêts du passé. En Aquitaine, la diversité des territoires n'a d'égale que celle de ses forêts : forêts cultivées de pins maritimes (l'une des plus vastes et des plus modernes d'Europe), peupleraies de la vallée de la Garonne, chênaies du Périgord et de l'Adour, hêtraies du Pays Basque et des Pyrénées… Initialement focalisées sur le pin maritime et les usages industriels de la résine ou du bois, les recherches forestières en Aquitaine ont progressivement embrassé tout le champ des connaissances nécessaires à une gestion durable de la forêt tout en développant ses filières de valorisation. Ce livre fait le bilan de toutes les avancées réalisées dans ce domaine depuis 50 ans et plus qu'une chronique, cet ouvrage est un outil pour tous. On y découvre la diversité génétique du pin maritime et son histoire, les stratégies de conservation et de création variétale, les modèles de croissance et de sylviculture, en lien avec l'évolution de la ressource en bois, la compréhension des mécanismes du fonctionnement de l'arbre et de la forêt (échanges d'eau, de minéraux, de gaz et de chaleur avec le sol et l'atmosphère), les mécanismes de résilience face aux adversités climatiques (froid, sécheresses, tempêtes), et sanitaires (insectes et maladies), les propriétés du bois, massif ou composite, en fonction de la sylviculture et des procédés industriels de transformation et de mise en œuvre, mais aussi les relations entre forêts et sociétés. Marquées par une histoire conflictuelle, les frontières de la Pologne ont connu, au cours de l’intégration à l’Union européenne (UE), d’importants changements relatifs à leurs fonctions. Cet ouvrage ...se propose d’analyser les conséquences géopolitiques de ces changements sur les espaces frontaliers ainsi que sur le territoire polonais, du début du processus d’adhésion à l’UE en 1998, à l’entrée complète dans l’espace Schengen en 2008. Ce travail revient dans un premier temps sur la dimension historique des frontières de la Pologne, caractérisées dans leur ensemble par leur grande instabilité. Ce retour en arrière nous permet de nous interroger, a posteriori, sur la spécificité des faits historiques qui ont marqué de façon durable l’espace polonais et ses frontières. Il propose ensuite une analyse comparative qui s’articule autour de la distinction fonctionnelle des frontières polonaises lors de l’intégration dans l’UE : d’un côté les frontières internes de l’UE « en déconstruction » ; de l’autre les frontières « en reconstruction » sur les nouveaux confins de l’UE. Il tente enfin de faire la synthèse de ce « jeu des frontières » en analysant ses conséquences sur le territoire polonais.
Le méthane contenu dans le charbon a longtemps constitué un danger pour les exploitations minières (c'est le « grisou » des mineurs) du fait des risques d'explosion qu'il présente. Aujourd'hui, alors ...que le passé minier tend à s'effacer progressivement, ce gaz naturel pourrait être capté par forage depuis la surface pour servir de nouvelle source d'énergie. En Lorraine, cette perspective soulève de nombreuses interrogations, teintées tantôt d'enthousiasme, tantôt d'inquiétude. D'avril 2013 à décembre 2015, une équipe pluridisciplinaire de chercheurs et d'enseignants-chercheurs de dix laboratoires universitaires français et québécois ont conduit une action de recherche dénommée « GazHouille » portant sur le projet d'exploitation du gaz de charbon en Lorraine et son intégration dans le territoire. L'originalité de leur travail réside dans son caractère transverse, car il apporte des éclairages géographiques, géologiques, de psychologie sociale, économiques, juridiques, politiques, etc., permettant d'appréhender le projet d'exploitation dans plusieurs de ses dimensions. Cet ouvrage rend compte des résultats majeurs de leur étude. Il n'a pas la prétention d'être exhaustif, mais peut servir à alimenter un débat ou une consultation publique sur le thème de gaz de charbon en Lorraine, ainsi qu'à expliciter et formuler les interrogations soulevées par les perspectives de son éventuelle exploitation.
Platforms in the urban environment are fundamentally unaccountable. They present themselves as too big to control, too new to regulate, and too innovative to stifle, and remain un-democratic, and ...usually distant, organizations with no interest in promoting local voices or investing in local priorities. This paper argues that platforms control urban interactions whilst remaining unaccountable through a strategic deployment of 'conjunctural geographies' - a way of being simultaneously embedded and disembedded from the space-times they mediate. These conjunctural geographies, however, render platforms vulnerable. The ephemeral nature of platforms means we can avoid them, circumvent them and replicate them; their material nature suggests points of regulation and resistance. The paper closes by pointing to three broad strategies -regulate, replicate, and resist - which can be deployed to build alternate platform futures. Each of which is built on understanding the simultaneously embedded and disembedded ways in which platforms occupy their conjunctural geographies.
This book gives a structured account of Egypt's transition from Ptolemaic to Roman rule by identifying key relationships between ecology, land tenure, taxation, administration and politics. It ...introduces theoretical perspectives from the social sciences and subjects them to empirical scrutiny using data from Greek and Demotic papyri as well as comparative evidence. Although building on recent scholarship, it offers some provocative arguments that challenge prevailing views. For example, patterns of land ownership are linked to population density and are seen as one aspect of continuity between the Ptolemaic and Roman period. Fiscal reform, by contrast, emerges as a significant mechanism of change not only in the agrarian economy but also in the administrative system and the whole social structure. Anyone seeking to understand the impact of Roman rule in the Hellenistic east must consider the well-attested processes in Egypt that this book seeks to explain.
This open access book highlights Singapore’s development into a city in which water and greenery, along with associated environmental, technical, social and political aspects have been harnessed and ...cultivated into a liveable sustainable way of life. It is also a story about a unique and thoroughgoing approach to large-scale and potentially transferable water sustainability, within largely urbanized circumstances, which can be achieved, along with complementary roles of environmental conservation, ecology, public open-space management and the greening of buildings, together with infrastructural improvements.
This article critically considers the importance of educators asking, 'who are the children we teach?' before attending to questions of purpose, curriculum and pedagogy. Through examining the ...relationships between identities, place and time-space, the article contributes to wider debates about how geography can enhance our knowledge of educational institutions, systems, processes, experiences and landscapes. Written in the context of a 'knowledge turn' in England - in which supporting young people to engage with disciplinary and subject knowledge has been positioned by some as the central purpose of schooling - the article argues that the geographies of children and young people have, at times, been under-considered in education. To counter this, drawing on a case study of five young people's narratives about London, the article uses the illustrative example of religion and identity to examine how the young people navigate multiple, sometimes contradictory, social spaces when constructing and representing their identities in London. The article concludes by arguing that for educators to truly empower young people in, and through, their schooling, it is of significant value for them to engage with the geographies of those they teach.

...Urban surface water floods pose growing threats in urban areas, which cause not only massive physical water disturbance, but also loss of human lives, destruction of social and economic infrastructures and disorder of society. The number and scale of flood damage in urban areas will continue to increase in the next several decades due to global trend in urbanization and climate change. Despite the extensive construction of grey infrastructures, many cities in the world remain vulnerable to surface water flooding, especially during the extremely weather events. Since the 1990s, green infrastructure has developed as an alternative and sustainable approach to mitigate flood hazard in urban areas. Despite the great effectiveness of urban green infrastructures in alleviating storm water runoff, there is comparatively little research for planners and designers to determine an appropriate strategy for green infrastructure planning. To address this gap, we propose a GIS-based multi-criteria evaluation method to identify the priority areas to site green infrastructure, based on five criteria: 1) storm-water runoff mitigation; 2) social flood vulnerable group protection; 3) flood sensitive area road infrastructures protection; 4) flood sensitive area buildings protection and 5) environmental justice. The weights of the five criteria are defined by the Analytic Hierarchy Process. We focus particularly on mitigating urban surface water flooding risk and demonstrate how the method can be applied using a case study of Ghent.
