The number of doctorates being awarded around the world has almost doubled over the last ten years, propelling it from a small elite enterprise into a large and ever growing international market. ...Within the context of increasing numbers of doctoral students this book examines the new doctorate environment and the challenges it is starting to face. Drawing on research from around the world the individual authors contribute to a previously under-represented focus of theorising the emerging practices of doctoral education and the shape of change in this arena.
Key aspects, expertly discussed by contributors from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, China, South Africa, Sweden and Denmark include:
the changing nature of doctoral education
the need for systematic and principled accounts of doctoral pedagogies
the importance of disciplinary specificity
the relationship between pedagogy and knowledge generation
issues of transdisciplinarity.
Reshaping Doctoral Education provides rich accounts of traditional and more innovative pedagogical practices within a range of doctoral systems in different disciplines, professional fields and geographical locations, providing the reader with a trustworthy and scholarly platform from which to design the doctioral experience. It will prove an essential resource for anyone involved in doctorate studies, whether as students, supervisors, researchers, administrators, teachers or mentors.
Framed by a wide range of factors, doctoral education has undergone a deep transformation, especially in the last two decades. The aim of this systematic literature review was to ascertain the ...dimensions in which the transformation of doctoral education has been revealed. The ultimate purpose was to understand how this transformation is related to and reflects the idea or concept of doctoral education, i.e., what this is or should be. The systematic review process involved the collection, systematisation and analysis of scientific texts on doctoral education to achieve a comprehensive picture. The analysis suggests the multidimensionality of the transformation in doctoral education, evidenced in aspects related to its foundations, objectives, methods, expertise, organisation and process. This seems, in turn, to indicate the coexistence of different ideas or concepts of doctoral education.
Business schools around the world have grown and prospered in the last few decades, but what does the future hold for business schools? This book explores the potential future disruption of the ...business school tradition by considering funding, value chains, strategic groups, value orientation, innovation and business models.
Historically, admissions committees for biomedical Ph.D. programs have heavily weighed GRE scores when considering applications for admission. The predictive validity of GRE scores on graduate ...student success is unclear, and there have been no recent investigations specifically on the relationship between general GRE scores and graduate student success in biomedical research. Data from Vanderbilt University Medical School's biomedical umbrella program were used to test to what extent GRE scores can predict outcomes in graduate school training when controlling for other admissions information. Overall, the GRE did not prove useful in predicating who will graduate with a Ph.D., pass the qualifying exam, have a shorter time to defense, deliver more conference presentations, publish more first author papers, or obtain an individual grant or fellowship. GRE scores were found to be moderate predictors of first semester grades, and weak to moderate predictors of graduate GPA and some elements of a faculty evaluation. These findings suggest admissions committees of biomedical doctoral programs should consider minimizing their reliance on GRE scores to predict the important measures of progress in the program and student productivity.

Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) are key to improving access to timely care at the local level and to ensuring quality, innovation, and developments in healthcare in Europe and worldwide. As we begin ...the process of implementing APNs in the Estonian healthcare system, it is necessary to understand what roles are attributed to APNs within the nursing profession in order to distinguish them from the roles of other healthcare professionals in the country. Therefore, qualitative longitudinal research was conducted to describe and understand how APN students identify their higher-level roles in their specialities and positions. 183 narrative essays written by the APN students in the second semester of their master's studies in Health Sciences at Tallinn Health Care College were analysed using inductive content analysis. Eight roles of APNs were revealed as observed by the students themselves: the continuously evolving direct care provider, the experience counsellor, the improving practitioner, the team player, the fighter and the advocate, the developer and the promoter, the leader, and the advancer on the move. From this we can conclude that APN students are already experienced and focused on clinical practice and evidence-based activities as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) while they have acquired and apply all the other core competencies of an Advanced Practise Nurse. The period of the COVID-19 pandemic and developing advanced practice has significantly increased the APN students' ability to work in and lead teams, and their courage to protect the rights of patients and nurses. Keywords: health science, Advanced Practice Nursing, postgraduate nursing education, narration.
The proportion of general surgeons with graduate degrees in Canada is increasing. We sought to evaluate the types of graduate degree held by surgeons in Canada, and whether differences in publication ...capacity exist. We evaluated all general surgeons working at English-speaking Canadian academic hospitals to determine the types of degrees achieved, changes over time and research output associated with each degree. We identified 357 surgeons, of whom 163 (45.7 %) had master's degrees and 49 (13.7 %) had PhDs. Achievement of graduate degrees increased over time, with more surgeons earning master's degrees in public health (MPH), clinical epidemiology and education (MEd), and fewer master's degrees in science (MSc) or PhDs. Most publication metrics were similar by degree type, but surgeons with PhDs published more basic science research than those with clinical epidemiology, MEd or MPH degrees (2.0 v. 0.0,
< 0.05); surgeons with clinical epidemiology degrees published more first-author articles than surgeons with MSc degrees (2.0 v. 0.0,
= 0.007). An increasing number of general surgeons hold graduate degrees, with fewer pursuing MSc and PhD degrees, and more holding MPH or clinical epidemiology degrees. Research productivity is similar for all groups. Support to pursue diverse graduate degrees could enable a greater breadth of research.

In our rapidly globalising world, “the global scholar" is a key concept for reimagining the roles of academics at the nexus of the global and the local. This book critically explores the implications ...of the concept for understanding postgraduate studies and supervision. It uses three conceptual lenses – “horizon", “currency" and “trajectory" – to organise the thirteen chapters, concluding with a reflection on the implications of Covid-19 for postgraduate studies and supervision. Authors bring their perspectives on the global scholar from a variety of contexts, including South Africa, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Chile, Germany, Cyprus, Kenya and Israel. They explore issues around policy, research and practice, sharing a concern with the relation between the local and the global, and a passion for advancing postgraduate studies and supervision.
This book provides graduate students with the tools they need to understand and complete a graduate degree, regardless of how the degree is offered-online or on-campus. It also encourages them to ...take control of the graduate school process as much as possible and negotiate with faculty and the administration regarding all aspects of the program.
