Workplace humor and organizational creativity are becoming topics of great interest to managers. There is a need to understand more about the role of humor in enhancing creative performance in the ...workplace. This study examines the relationship between the three functions of humor and organizational creativity. Results suggest that liberating humor and controlling humor relate significantly to organizational creativity, the former positively and the latter negatively, while stress relieving humor was not found to relate significantly to organizational creativity. Implications for practicing managers and research on humor and creativity are discussed.
•Hospitality employees’ affiliative humor was positively related to workplace fun.•Hospitality employees’ aggressive humor was positively related to workplace fun.•Supervisor support for fun was ...positively related to employees’ job embeddedness (JE).•Full-time employees’ perceived coworker socializing was positively related to JE.
The hospitality industry is known to have a relatively higher turnover rate. Job embeddedness (JE) was identified as an effective solution of voluntary turnover. Building on the Social Exchange Theory, the current study investigates the relationships among hospitality employees’ workplace humor, perceived workplace fun and organizational JE. Two studies using two different samples were conducted to examine the proposed relationships. Structural Equation Modeling was employed for hypotheses testing. Both studies suggested that hospitality employees’ use of affiliative humor and aggressive humor at workplace were positively associated with their perception of supervisor support for fun as well as coworker socializing. Furthermore, perceived supervisor support for fun was positively related to hospitality employees’ organizational JE. Only full-time hospitality employees’ perceived coworker socializing was positively associated with their organizational JE. The research provided useful human resource management practices for hospitality businesses in the U.S.

Humor is an important tool for expressing many emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger and surprise. In recent years, the use of humor has started to gain the quality of a therapy approach. The ...use of humor in therapy helps clients to express meaningless situations or inconsistencies in their lives in a humorous way by making them entertaining. At this point, it is very important for the counselor to be able to understand the purpose of the clients' arrival and their sense of humor depending on this purpose and to make interventions accordingly. Since the concepts of humor therapy and Laughter Therapy / Laughter Yoga are often used interchangeably in the literature, this study synthesizes both therapy approaches and tries to reveal their elements and importance. In this review, it is aimed to examine all aspects of the emergence of the use of humor in therapy, basic concepts, sub-dimensions of humor, counselor-client relationship using humor in therapy, humor therapy process, laughter therapy / laughter yoga process, laughter therapy / laughter yoga techniques, studies on the use of humor in therapy, why humor should or should not be used in therapy. In these respects, this study is expected to contribute to the literature and help fill the existing gaps. In addition, it is predicted that the widespread use of humor therapy and the use of humor therapy in different studies will benefit many clients and experts working in this field.
The present study builds on our previous study within the framework of Wyer and Collin's comprehension–elaboration theory of humor processing. In this study, an attempt is made to segregate the ...neural substrates of incongruity detection and incongruity resolution during the comprehension of verbal jokes. Although a number of fMRI studies have investigated the incongruity-resolution process, the differential neurological substrates of comprehension are still not fully understood. The present study utilized an event-related fMRI design incorporating three conditions (unfunny, nonsensical and funny) to examine distinct brain regions associated with the detection and resolution of incongruities. Stimuli in the unfunny condition contained no incongruities; stimuli in the nonsensical condition contained irresolvable incongruities; and stimuli in the funny condition contained resolvable incongruities. The results showed that the detection of incongruities was associated with greater activation in the right middle temporal gyrus and right medial frontal gyrus, and the resolution of incongruities with greater activation in the left superior frontal gyrus and left inferior parietal lobule. Further analysis based on participants' rating scores provided converging results. Our findings suggest a three-stage neural circuit model of verbal humor processing: incongruity detection and incongruity resolution during humor comprehension and inducement of the feeling of amusement during humor elaboration.
► This study sought to isolate the neural substrates underlying humor comprehension. ► Incongruity detection and resolution were segregated using a ‘nonsensical’ condition. ► Detection activated the right middle temporal gyrus and right medial frontal gyrus. ► Resolution activated the left superior frontal gyrus and left inferior parietal lobe. ► A neural circuit model of humor comprehension and elaboration processing is proposed.
This open access book offers four ways to enrich traditional research methods in business ethics. By looking at critical jokes and cartoons on management consultants, their business practice and ...their clients’ demands, many ethical transgressions in business get addressed. By illustrating and criticizing such transgression, jokes can serve as an example in a theoretical argument, as a prompt to reflect on in an open interview, as a statement to assess in an enquiry or as basis for qualitative content analysis. By adding jokes to the conversation on ethical transgressions in business much depth and honesty can be added, resulting in better research data. Jokes can help to surpass social desirability bias included in answers given in traditional interview settings or enquiries. This book is of interest to consultants, researchers, educators and students in business ethics and management. The book showcases what kind of practical and ethical wisdom is embedded in business jokes and how this knowledge can be made productive in the context of business ethics.
A recent line of research in the field of humor has proposed the existence of two morally based comic styles. One of them, corrective humor (or satire), seeks to ridicule and mock to establish ...justice. In contrast, benevolent humor attempts to correct deviances using humor in a friendly manner understanding human imperfections. Considering their focus on correcting what is perceived as morally wrong, in this study we seek to examine how these styles can affect the evaluation that is made of politicians after being exposed to humor that attacks them. To achieve this, we conducted an experiment in which three groups had to evaluate two politicians after being exposed to different stimuli (memes that ridiculed them, images with the same content without its humorous content, or no exposure; total n = 160). Our results demonstrate that it is corrective humor and not benevolent humor that influences the evaluation and that it does so positively; people with higher scores in corrective humor have a better evaluation of politicians after seeing memes with anti-politician content. We discuss possible explanations for this finding and implications for political psychology and humor studies.
Conventional wisdom posits that aqueous humor leaves the eye by passive bulk flow without involving energy-dependent processes. However, recent studies have shown that active processes, such as cell ...contractility, contribute to outflow regulation. Here, we examine whether inhibiting cellular metabolism affects outflow facility in mice.
We measured outflow facility in paired enucleated eyes from C57BL/6J mice using iPerfusion. We had three Experimental Sets: ES1, perfused at 35°C versus 22°C; ES2, perfused with metabolic inhibitors versus vehicle at 35°C; and ES3, perfused at 35°C versus 22°C in the presence of metabolic inhibitors. Inhibitors targeted glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (2-deoxy-D-glucose, 3PO and sodium azide). We also measured adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels in separate murine anterior segments treated like ES1 and ES2.
Reducing temperature decreased facility by 63% 38%, 78% (mean 95% confidence interval (CI), n = 10 pairs; P = 0.002) in ES1 after correcting for changes in viscosity. Metabolic inhibitors reduced facility by 21% 9%, 31% (n = 9, P = 0.006) in ES2. In the presence of inhibitors, temperature reduction decreased facility by 44% 29%, 56% (n = 8, P < 0.001) in ES3. Metabolic inhibitors reduced anterior segment adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels by 90% 83%, 97% (n = 5, P<<0.001), but reducing temperature did not affect ATP.
Inhibiting cellular metabolism decreases outflow facility within minutes. This implies that outflow is not entirely passive, but depends partly on energy-dependent cellular processes, at least in mice. This study also suggests that there is a yet unidentified mechanism, which is strongly temperature-dependent but metabolism-independent, that is necessary for nearly half of normal outflow function in mice.
While humor's use in the higher education classroom has been widely studied, research on the use, implications, and impact of humor rarely include instruction librarians. In addition to the already ...subjective nature of humor, factors such as gender and library anxiety complicate the ways in which students might perceive a librarian's humor. Accordingly, opportunities for further research on librarians' use of humor are abundant. By synthesizing and contextualizing existing instructional humor research, this article seeks to highlight research opportunities on the use of humor among instruction librarians.

Past literature on humor and creativity mainly focuses on the positive effect of humor on the divergent aspect of creativity. However, few researches have examined the relationship between humor and ...the convergent aspect of creativity, specifically insight problem-solving. The present research aimed to fill in this gap and examine the effect of humor on insight problem-solving. In Study 1, a sample of 32 subjects participated in a within-subjects study that tested the effects of humor comprehension (cognitive component of humor) and humor appreciation (affective component of humor) on insight problem-solving. In Study 2, a sample of 62 participants was recruited in a between-subjects study that examined the mediating role of cognitive flexibility. The results showed that: (1) participants' performance on insight problem-solving was significantly higher in humor condition than that in the non-humor condition; (2) no performance differences were found between the cognitive humor condition and the cognitive and affective humor condition; (3) cognitive flexibility partially mediated the effect of humor on insight problem-solving. These findings suggested that humor comprehension, rather than humor appreciation, can promote individuals' performance on insight problem-solving. The implications for convergent aspect of creativity and interventions on how to utilize humor to enhance creativity are discussed.
•The cognitive component of humor bolsters the insight problem-solving.•The affective component of humor doesn't promote the insight problem-solving.•Cognitive flexibility mediated the effect of humor on insight problem-solving.
