The use of humour in sermons may seem incongruous, or distracting, since the traditional sermon's function is seriously didactic. Nevertheless, and unusually perhaps for a 'new' minority Christian ...denomination whose members have a reputation for being 'rather dour and pious', there exists a strong tradition in the Mormon

Church for sermonic humour. Indeed, this tradition is officially sanctioned and modelled by Church leaders, who - regarded by the membership as modern-day prophets and apostles - thus lend the tradition ecclesiastical authority endorsement. This paper seeks to contribute to the emerging area of research into minorities and humour, by presenting the results of an analysis of Church leaders' sermonic humour. To study one religious minority's sermonic humour, is to add to our wider understanding of minorities' humour practices, suggesting how they might intersect with each other in an increasingly multicultural-multireligious community such as the USA.

The present study was conducted with the purpose of investigating the use of humour by EFL teachers in a private language institute in the context of Iran. In so doing, the study made an attempt to ...identify the forms of humour EFL teachers opt to use more frequently in relation to the students’ teaching in the classroom through observing their classroom teachings. Moreover, an interview was held with the EFL teachers to seek their perceptions with regard to the functions humorous language can serve in the process of language teaching and learning and their suggestions as to the implementation of humour in the classroom. The findings of the study demonstrate that Iranian EFL teachers show the inclination to use jokes, physical humour and riddles more frequently than other forms of humour. Moreover, the results of the interview reveal that EFL teachers assign some more commonly functions to the humorous language in the classroom such as creating a cheerful and friendly atmosphere, acting as a relaxing, comforting, and tension reducing device, increasing student interest and enjoyment, increasing learners’ concentration and motivation, and finally improving the quality of learning. Finally, the suggestions for appropriate use of humour and implications of the study are discussed in the result and conclusion sections, respectively.
The Internet is a space where the harassment of women and marginalised groups online has attracted the attention of both academic and popular press. Feminist research has found that instances of ...online sexism and harassment are often reframed as “acceptable” by constructing them as a form of humour. Following this earlier research, this present paper explores a uniquely technologically-bound type of humour by adopting a feminist, social-constructionist approach to examine the content of popular Internet memes. Using thematic analysis on a sample of 240 image macro Internet memes (those featuring an image with a text caption overlaid), we identified two broad, overarching themes – Technological Privilege and Others. Within the analysis presented here, complex and troubling constructions of gendered identity in online humour are explored, illustrating the potential for the othering and exclusion of women through humour in technological spaces. We argue that this new iteration of heteronormative, hegemonic masculinity in online sexism, couched in “irony” and “joking”, serves to police, regulate and create rightful occupants and owners of such spaces.
In this article, we describe and analyse police managers' response to incidents of gender and sexual harassment as they play out in a police workplace context. The aim is to examine managers' ...supervisory discretion in safeguarding employees' legal rights, through three research questions: 1) What implicit understandings of sexual harassment, in the organisation, are made visible by managers´ approach to harassment; 2) what do these implicit problem understandings mean for which incidents become legitimate and illegitimate experiences of harassment in the organisation; and 3) which types of harassment incidents are employees protected against? Based on two cases of harassment, observed during 6 months of fieldwork, we explore and analyse humour and managers' power of definition, applying socio-legal perspectives on implementation of laws and rights in a work context. Through this, small incidents of everyday harassment become visible and highlight the role of police managers in transforming policy to action.
In the course of history, humour has been more explored in literature, but little emphasis has been laid on it in teaching for higher education students. Intended or spontaneous, humour can play an ...important role in teaching and can facilitate teacher-student communication. It is a good pedagogical method whose main aim is to enhance students’ learning. The teaching-learning process can acquire special valences through humour. Humour enlivens the atmosphere in the classroom, helps students overcome learning difficulties and creates social bonds between participants in the act of communication. The present work aims to highlight humour complexity in the educational process. It also focuses on approaching humour from such perspectives as: definition, semantic richness, and pedagogical implications.
Aim
To quantify the effect of laughter and humour interventions on depression, anxiety, and sleep quality in adults.
Design
A meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Data Sources
PubMed, ...Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Weipu, and Wanfang Data were searched from their inception up to December 2018.
Review methods
The reporting of this meta‐analytical review was conducted according to the guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration. Two reviewers selected the studies, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias (Cochrane Collaboration bias assessment tool) of the included papers independently.
Results
Ten studies comprising 814 participants were included. Meta‐analysis showed that these interventions significantly decreased adults' depression, anxiety, and improved their sleep quality. The results of subgroup analysis showed that depression benefits more from long‐term laughter intervention.
Conclusions
This meta‐analysis revealed that laughter and humour interventions are effective in relieving depression, anxiety, and improve sleep quality in adults. More studies with high quality and follow‐up assessment should be conducted for future research.
Impact
This review synthesized current evidence using laughter and humour interventions to reduce negative emotion and promote better results in adults, especially with respect to target the applicability between different populations or intervention methods. In addition, humour and laughter interventions are safe, convenient, interesting and can promote interpersonal relationship in both patients and medical workers, which have great feasibility and potential to be used as an aspect of psychotherapy for clinical and nursing to improve well‐beings in adults.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and is characterized by the progressive degeneration of the optic nerve. Intraocular pressure (IOP), which is considered to be the ...main risk factor for glaucoma development, builds up in response to the resistance (resistance to what?) provided by the trabecular meshwork (TM) to aqueous humor (AH) outflow. Although the TM and its relationship to AH outflow have remained at the forefront of scientific interest, researchers remain uncertain regarding which mechanisms drive the deterioration of the TM. Current tissue‐engineering fabrication techniques have come up with promising approaches to successfully recreate the TM. Nonetheless, more accurate models are needed to understand the factors that make glaucoma arise. In this review, we provide a chronological evaluation of the technological milestones that have taken place in the field of glaucoma research, and we conduct a comprehensive comparison of available TM fabrication technologies. Additionally, we also discuss AH perfusion platforms, since they are essential for the validation of these scaffolds, as well as pressure–outflow relationship studies and the discovery of new IOP‐reduction therapies.
A comprehensive comparison between existing tissue‐engineering fabrication technologies for trabecular meshwork (TM) mimicking is studied in this review. Moreover, aqueous humor perfusion platforms are evaluated due to their fundamental value to validate these scaffolds and perform outflow studies. Appropriate mimicking of the native TM will not only provide repeatability to many studies but will also allow the understanding of the biological and physiological issues related to glaucoma that are, as of yet, unanswered.
Establishing generalisable humour style profiles promises to have significant value for educational, clinical, and occupational application. However, previous research investigating such profiles has ...thus far presented inconsistent results. To determine the generalisability and value of humour style profiles, a large and geographically diverse examination of humour styles was conducted through a cross-sectional questionnaire methodology involving 863 participants from across three world regions. Findings identify inconsistencies in the humour style profiles across countries tested and the extant literature, possibly indicative of cultural differences in the behavioural expression of trait humour. Furthermore, when directly compared, humour types, rather than humour styles, consistently provide the greatest predictive value for friendship and well-being outcomes. As such, with respect to both consistency and value, capturing humour style profiles appears to represent a relatively reductionist approach to appreciating the nuances in the use and consequences of humour.
Jokes is a book of jokes and a book about them. Cohen loves a good laugh, but as a philosopher, he is also interested in how jokes work, why they work, and when they don't. The delight at the end of ...a joke is the result of a complex set of conditions and processes, and Cohen takes us through these conditions in a philosophical exploration of humor. He considers questions of audience, selection of joke topics, the ethnic character of jokes, and their morality, all with plenty of examples that will make you either chuckle or wince. Jokes: more humorous than other philosophy books, more philosophical than other humor books.
The Second Conference on Historical Humour took place on October 26-27, 2017 at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw (Poland). The conference was organised by its Department of Language ...History of the Institute of Polish Philology. 25 representatives of various research centers in Poland took part in the conference. The aim of the meeting was to deepen interest in humour in its historical dimension, as well as to reflect on the theory and methodology of research on this phenomenon in the past.
