In recent years, social apathy has been able to attract the attention of sociologists and social psychologists. Thus, the present study addresses the issue of social apathy in the real and virtual ...worlds. This research, which consists of a social survey, was conducted in spring 2019 in Kashan, among which 384 students of Payame Noor University, Medical Sciences University, and the State University of Kashan, were selected via a non-proportional classified sampling method. The results showed that, in general, the degree of social apathy of students in both real and virtual environments is a little more than the middle, although its amount in the real spaces is slightly higher than virtual ones. It also became clear that there is a correlation between the degree of social apathy of students in the real world and the virtual worlds, but the degree of this apathy in the real or virtual world did not differ significantly in terms of the field of study, type of university, residence and income. In other words, the degree of social apathy was relatively the same in all the mentioned groups of students. Keywords: social apathy, virtual world, students, information-communication technology
Mathematics teachers in integrated Islamic schools in Maluku are having problems implementing the integration of Islam into mathematics learning. This study aims to develop a learning model based on ...Islamic Integrated Information Communication Technology (IICT) to help teachers increase creativity in mathematical problem solving and students' environmental awareness. The main output of this research is an ICT-based active learning model that integrates Islamic sciences into mathematics learning to support the development of creativity skills in solving mathematical problems and students' environmental awareness at an early age. The development of the learning model in this study is a combination of the Plomp (2013), Dick & Carey (2015), and Joyce et al. (2009). Plomp's model was used for the research and model development phase, Dick & Carey for instructional design, and Joyce et al. for the model's contents. The resulting model is an adaptation of the hierarchical and procedural combination of the three developments. The research subjects are mathematics teachers and students. The data analysis technique used is the analysis of the instrument's validity, the IICT model, the practicality, and the effectiveness of the IICT model. Based on expert validation and testing results, the resulting model meets the needs of mathematics teachers and students of SMP/MTs in an integrated Islamic school environment. The results showed that the IICT learning model was qualified to help teachers integrate Islam in mathematics learning, increase creativity in solving math problems, and students' environmental awareness.
In the modern age, the increasing use and exploration of information technology and the internet by hackers has created a new security threat to the integrity and socio-political stability of the ...Malaysian nation. Malaysia is not only one of the most dynamic developing countries in the region, but it is also facing many border disputes and terrorism with its neighboring countries. For example, maritime and territorial disputes between Malaysia and Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines, as well as sovereignty disputes with Singapore over part rocks island with Singapore. These disputes not only dragged diplomatic diplomats among the two political leaders of the country, but also involved cyber-hacking between countries. For example, cyber-attacks have taken place, when disputes over ownership of the Ambalat Block and East Ambalat Block in the Makassar Strait are at its peak between Malaysia and Indonesia. The attack has resulted in severe damage to a number of government sites owned by both countries. This paper analyzes the emerging role of information technology, the internet and hackers as a potential future security threat to the Malaysian nation and society, both international and domestic.
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to understand the impact of techno-overload and techno-invasion on work and family. Specifically, we focus on intention to turnover in the work domain, work-family ...conflict in the work-family domain, and family burnout in the family domain. Furthermore, this study examines the moderating role of entitlement, a personality variable, in this process.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 253 people who were using technology to complete their work over two time periods, the relationships were examined using hierarchical moderated regression analysis.FindingsThe results revealed that both techno-overload and techno-invasion were significantly related to greater turnover intentions, higher work-family conflict, and greater family burnout. In addition, entitlement played a moderating role such that those who were higher in entitlement had stronger techno-overload-outcome and technostress invasion-outcome relationships.Practical implicationsThese findings may provide managers key insights to help manage employees, especially those with an inflated sense of entitlement, to mitigate the serious negative outcomes associated with techno-overload and techno-invasion. In particular, both techno- overload and techno-invasion had minimal impact on negative outcomes when employee entitlement was lower. However, when employee entitlement was higher, techno-overload and techno-invasion had considerable negative effects.Originality/valueDue to the ubiquitous nature of information-communication technology (ICT) in organizations today, individuals often experience techno-overload and techno-invasion. This research utilized conservation of resources theory to examine these relationships. This study established the relationships of both techno-overload and techno-invasion with key organizational and family outcomes and points to the critical role of the personality variable, entitlement, in this process. The results provide theoretical and practical advancement in the role of technology with people in organizations today.
To test whether a complex behavioral intervention delivered remotely to connect individuals to clinical resources after hospitalization for TBI improved their quality of life.
Community-based ...randomized pragmatic clinical trial. Main measures TBI-QOL, Activity Measure for Post-Acute Care (AM-PAC), Clinical Satisfaction and Competency Rating Scale.
332 individuals ≥18 years-old hospitalized for TBI in four upper Midwest states were randomized to Remote (n = 166) and Usual Care (n = 166) groups. The groups were equivalent and representative of their state population's racial and ethnic composition, age, and proportion living in rural communities. There were no significant differences within or between experimental groups over the study period in TBI-QOL t-scores. There was a significant improvement in AM-PAC Daily Activities within the Remote group and a significant between-group improvement in clinical satisfaction for the Remote group.
Enrolling a representative, regional community-based sample of individuals with TBI can be successful, and delivering a customized complex behavioral intervention remotely is feasible. The overall lack of intervention effectiveness was likely due to enrolling individuals without pre-identified clinical needs, initiating intervention after the immediate post-acute phase when needs are often highest, inability to provide direct clinical care remotely, and potential lack of outcome measure responsiveness in our sample.
Environmental degradation is one of the major global problems. This is because, like many other regions in the world, OECD countries also contribute to global warming by using non-renewable energy ...sources to speed up economic growth. Although ICT promotes globalization, no prior research has examined how this trend may affect CO2 emissions in OECD countries. Given this scenario, the current study aims to examine the impact of Information communication technology, human capital, and globalization on environmental degradation in OECD economies from 1990 to 2018. The present study employs second-generation panel econometric techniques, i.e., panel unit root tests (CADF and CIPS), Westerlund co-integration technique, cross-sectional ARDL, and AMG. The results confirm that ICT, renewable energy consumption, and human capital help to bring environmental sustainability in OECD countries. However, the variables globalization, economic growth, and non-renewable energy consumption lead to increase environmental degradation. Finally, it is suggested that investments in the ICT sector must be subsidized to promote online businesses and incentivized through heavy tax relief.

We evaluate a program in Pakistan that equips government health inspectors with a smartphone app which channels data on rural clinics to senior policy makers. The system led to rural clinics being ...inspected 104% more often after 6 months, but only 43.8% more often after a year, with the latter estimate not attaining significance at conventional levels. There is also no clear evidence that the increase in inspections led to increases in general staff attendance. In addition, we test whether senior officials act on the information provided by the system. Focusing only on districts where the app is deployed, we find that highlighting poorly performing facilities on a dashboard viewed by supervisors raises doctor attendance by 75%. Our results indicate that technology may be able to mobilize data to useful effect, even in low capacity settings.
•Channeling data to policy makers can improve service delivery, even in low capacity states.•Smartphones can be integrated into health infrastructures to allow geographically diffuse data to be rapidly aggregated.•Such systems can be used to improve incentives for performance for government inspectors, at least in the short term.
The recent development of smoking cessation interventions for smokers with chronic diseases has focused heavily on brief interventions. However, these interventions are too brief to make an impact on ...these smokers, especially when most of them are without any intention to quit. Previous studies showed that smokers who did not want to quit might be interested in changing other health behaviours. Also, once people engage in a health behaviour, they are found more likely to change other unhealthy habits. Hence, a general health promotion approach could be a feasible approach to motivate smokers who do not want to quit to first engage in any desirable health behaviour, and later quit smoking when they intend to do so. This study aims to determine the potential efficacy and effect size of such intervention approach in promoting smoking cessation for smokers with chronic diseases.
This is a randomized controlled trial. A convenience sample of 60 smokers with chronic diseases will be randomly assigned into either experimental (n = 30) or control group (n = 30). Smokers in the experimental group will receive an individual face-to-face brief motivational interviewing (MI) with generic advice on selected health behaviour. More brief MI messages will be delivered to them via WhatsApp/WeChat for 6 months. For subject in the control group, they will be asked to indicate their desirable health-related practice. However, no MI and booster interventions will be given. All subjects will complete a questionnaire at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Subjects abstinent from cigarettes at 12 months will perform a biochemical validation. The primary outcome is biochemically validated smoking abstinence at 12 months. Effect size of the intervention will be estimated by the odd ratios using intention-to-treat.
This is the first study to determine the potential efficacy for the use of a personalized general health promotion approach in promoting smoking cessation for smokers with chronic diseases. If our proposed intervention is effective, we will able to assist smokers with chronic disease to quit smoking and change their health behaviour simultaneously.
