Rakov Škocjan is a basin in a small karst plain comprising the Rak Valley and the small basin Podbojev Laz. Bedrock terraces in the basin slopes indicate flattening of the basin floor at the water ...table level at higher elevations and progressive basin development and transformation with surface water flow. Detailed studies of the surface and subsurface karst features in Rakov Škocjan made it possible to describe the basin’s evolution and its development in previous genetic stages. The study (‘Geomorphological Characteristics of Rakov Škocjan‘) based on detailed morphographic mapping, collection of morphometric data, speleological analyses, and granulometric analyses of loamy sediments. A synthesis of the findings shows that the basin’s genesis and development was much more complex than described in earlier literature. The basin was formed as a surface karst feature through several development stages in which the locations of springs and ponors had changed. Morphogenetic characteristics resulted in an exceptional variety of karst phenomena in a small area, although the basic water course in the broader regional sense did not significantly change.
A good knowledge of the natural and cultural heritage of karst is a precondition for the rational planning of life on it. We try to organize the knowledge to make it as useful as possible for ...planners. We are involved in individual projects related to the regional planning, water supply systems, the construction of transportation infrastructure, the closure of landfills in karst areas, the collection of data on karst caves and their protection, karst ecology and determining the extent of human influence on the karst underground. A new book series Karstology and development challenges on karst was designed to present the results of completed and new projects to a broader public.The first book with the subtitle Water contains selected directly applicable research studies on karst waters, their characteristics, endangerment, and protection. It is composed of ten chapters, which can be grouped into three main themes. In the introduction the importance, characteristics and vulnerability of karst aquifers are presented,then various case studies of pollution and endangerment are described (traffic, landfills, military objects, flooding), and at the end some guidelines for the protection of karst water sources are summarized. The book is a bilingual publication in Slovene and English. It is aimed at a broad circle of users, researchers, students and planners.
Since 1994, karstologists have participated uninterruptedly in the planning and construction of expressways on Slovenia’s karst. The choice of expressway and railway routes must above all respect the ...integrity of the karst landscape and follow recommendations on avoiding major karst surface features and already known caves. Special attention is devoted to the impact of the construction and use of expressways on karst waters. The results of constant research of karst features discovered in the course of the construction of expressways have enriched our knowledge of the natural and cultural heritage and deepened our karstological knowledge. They also represent starting points for planning life on karst surfaces and the protection of karst. The book is intended for karstologists, experts from the field of earth sciences, engineering geologists, planners of traffic routes, students, nature protectionists, planners in administrative units, managers of karst water resources, waterworks, tourist caves, etc.
Karstologija je već svojim nastankom, prije oko 120 godina, bitno obilježena kao djelovanje koje se ne može ograničiti na jednu disciplinu, nego je odgovorna prema prostoru krša, što po procjenama ...zauzima do petine svjetskog kopna. Tijekom 20. stoljeća primarno je razvijana kao dio fizičkih geoznanosti te primjenjivana u građevinarstvu, šumarstvu i poljoprivredi, a krajem 20. stoljeća definirana kao nezavisni, integralni znanstveni sustav koji se razvio iz multidisciplinarnog sklopa znanosti koje su neovisno proučavale specifična krška pitanja (Panoš 1995). Definirana kao holistička znanost, karstologija je tek na svom početku, pa se od primjene humanističkih pristupa, koji su zadnjih desetljeća imali prevratnička iskustva u percepciji prirode, očekuje mnogo. Ti su pozivi karstologiji na Dinarskom kršu još izazovniji jer je ona nastala na toj najvećoj europskoj cjelini te je kao svoje stručne termine uzela i planetarno afirmirala niz narodnih naziva za krške pojave. U tekstu se iznose osnovni problemi povezani s aktualnom percepcijom krša, koja se temelji na njegovoj parcijalnoj slici, a ne cjelini. Nadalje, obrazlažu se neke štetne posljedice, razmatra pojam holizma i mogućnost njegove primjene u karstologiji, dosadašnja iskustva karstologije s holističkim pristupom te analizira kakve zahtjeve postavlja holizam prema krškim znanostima.
The Postojnska jama cave system represents a union of old, now dry, horizontal cave passages, the Pivka river active passage, and shafts or collapse dolines, which enable surface connection with some ...cave passages. The present entrance to the cave is formed at the contact between the Postojna basin impermeable Eocene flysch and the Upper Cretaceous limestone. The Pivka river sink entrance is formed along interbedded movements in the horizontal direction, and in the vertical direction it lies in a strong tectonic fault zone of NE-SW direction. The cave passages are formed in tectonic deformations which developed by the formation of the Postojna anticline, as there are interbedded movements, and in later fault deformations, where the main tectonic fault zones directions are the Dinaric NW-SE and cross-Dinaric NE-SW. Besides two main fault directions, the accompanying broken and fissured zones which are the result of the fault Dinaric tectonics are also favourable to cave formation.
