Abstract
The author, a writer and editor and pioneer in the field known as knowledge services, writes about his friendship with Frances Hesselbein. “She liked,” the author writes, “that my career was ...in knowledge services – as a consultant, author, and teacher – and she liked connecting that with her work in leadership.” The author is a longtime educator, and “Frances had strong expectations about how young people move into their roles as our future leaders. As a result, she had a passionate interest in working with young people simply because it was how she thought.” She suggested, in 2016, that she and the author would do a conference, “Leadership Imperatives for Millennials,” about leadership and knowledge for the students, held at Frances’ New York office. She was the keynote speaker, and the students’ “reactions were nothing short of phenomenal (in fact, the word ‘mesmerizing’ came up many times as they described the conference).”
Abstract
The author, founder, and CEO of The Grit Institute was one of the first women to fly the Apache helicopter in the U.S. Army. As a Girl Scout years ago, she encountered her “introduction to ...service above self,” while not being aware at the time of Frances Hesselbein, and her leadership of the Girl Scouts of the USA. The author writes that "Frances’s leadership and example in my 31 years as a Girl Scout has loomed large. My early years as a girl member were also those immediately following Frances’s tenure as National Executive Director.’’ This influence continued throughout the author’s life: “As I progressed to becoming an adult volunteer and eventually a National Board member, I leaned more formally on the lessons that Frances imparted to us all through her thought leadership.” As she assumes her new leadership role, she notes that “We are steeped in the Girl Scout Promise and Law: courageous and strong, with a commitment to honesty, fairness, and respect for ourselves and others.”
