Abstract
Although the Visions of Levi (so-called Aramaic Levi Document) is a Jewish priestly composition written in the second or third century BCE, the largest part of its text comes from the trove ...of Jewish medieval manuscripts found in the Genizah of the Ezra synagogue in Old Cairo. Among the Genizah scrolls housed at the University of Manchester Library, Gideon Bohak found a new fragment (P 1185) of the pseudepigraphic document dedicated to Levi and his life. The present study contains a new edition of P 1185, including its paleographic description, notes on the readings, comments and photographs of the manuscript.
In this article we provide a version of Chow's theorem for real analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in the complex projective space Pn, n≥2. More specifically, we prove that a real analytic Levi-flat ...hypersurface M⊂Pn, with singular set of real dimension at most 2n−4 and whose Levi leaves are contained in algebraic hypersurfaces, is tangent to the levels of a rational function in Pn. As a consequence, M is a semialgebraic set. We also prove that a Levi foliation on Pn — a singular real analytic foliation whose leaves are immersed complex manifolds of codimension one — satisfying similar conditions — singular set of real dimension at most 2n−4 and all leaves algebraic — is defined by the level sets of a rational function.
This paper examines Philip Roth's most Holocaust-haunted novel: The Plot Against America . Through a comparative intertextual study of Primo Levi's Se questo è un uomo (published in the United States ...as Survival in Auschwitz ), Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl , and Roth's Plot —and through an analysis of the other references to Frank and Levi in Roth's writing—this article argues that The Plot Against America should be read considering the profound impact of these works on Roth. It further argues that Plot is not merely Roth's counterfactual novel about what America would have looked like in the early 1940s had a president who sympathized with the Third Reich assumed control of the United States government. It is Roth's imagined Holocaust memoir, the one which the contingencies of history spared him from having to write as an actual witness, but which he nonetheless chose to write after having been profoundly impacted by his friendship with (and profound esteem and empathy for the works of) Primo Levi.
Let M be a smooth pseudoconvex real hypersurface in Cn+1 with smooth defining function ρ and p∈M. Assume that the Levi form ∂∂‾ρ has at least n−k positive eigenvalues at p with k<n. For an integer ...s∈k,n, we show that the regular contact type a(s)(M,p), the commutator type t(s)(M,p) and the Levi form type c(s)(M,p) of the real hypersurface are the same.
The present study explores depictions of converso spirituality in two polemical works written around 1650 by Saul Levi Mortera. As the chief rabbi of Amsterdam, Mortera oversaw the rejudaization of ...conversos who fled to the city from the Portuguese and Spanish Inquisitions. In order to persuade conversos to abandon crypto-Judaism, Mortera wrote polemical works in which he asserted the superiority of rabbinic Judaism. However, Mortera's works reveal that some conversos were reluctant to undergo rejudaization because of an enduring attachment to crypto-Judaism.
