Preserving and providing access to local archives is one of the roles performed by public libraries in New South Wales. This role is not mandated, nor is it a stated priority for public libraries. ...Local government records are regulated by legislation, but what of the other records documenting the lives of rural and city communities? In many cases the library's local studies collection becomes the default home of the archives of local community organisations and of individuals whose personal papers are acquired by libraries. In some cases, the library shares the role of maintaining local archives with historical societies, museums and universities. The result is a functioning example of distributed custody, where public libraries and other local institutions take responsibility for local archives. This paper is a case study that draws on two major surveys of local studies collections undertaken by the State Library of NSW, the first in 1984 and the second in 2013-2014. It concludes that public libraries have been critical for over 50 years in ensuring that local archives have been acquired and managed, despite there being no explicit regulatory or policy frameworks for doing so.
The change of functions of rural areas of Volchikha district in Altai krai during the post-Soviet period and its factors are analyzed in this article. The aim of this work was to study local factors ...and the consequences of social and economic changes in rural Altai. Qualitative sociological methods and methods of field survey are mainly applied. Statistical approaches are used for verification of data and materials from the Tomsk Archive confirm the information on enterprises and farms received from respondents. Based on the analysis of the obtained materials, the following conclusions are made. The development of rural settlements within a homogeneous area was stabilized under the effects of a number of local factors: physical-geographical conditions, economic-geographical position, and informal institutions. The impact of historical and ethnic factors on the development of some settlements is also significant. On the background of a widespread population outflow to cities, old-developed villages located in more favorable natural conditions at the forest–steppe boundary decay less intensively in comparison with settlements of the Soviet period in the middle of the dry Kulunda Steppe. The most successful old-developed villages are located closer to the district center, because residents may receive services there and specialists from the district center can work in the village and improve its quality of life. The strength of public relations within the village is of great importance: more heterogeneous villages without social traditions disappear faster. It may be concluded that local factors are significant for the development of rural settlements on the background of a homogeneous steppe region.
In the framework of the modeling of composite beam structures, the eXtended Variational Formulation (XVF) is carried out to couple different kinematics. The purpose is to take advantages of efficient ...models and reduce the overall computational cost without loss of local precision. In this way, the structure is divided into non-overlapping domains with different kinematics. Local domains of interest are described with advanced models, such as refined Sinus model, to precisely describe local behavior, while the remaining global domain uses simple classical models. Each of the kinematics needs a suitable Finite Element (FE) approximation, therefore the coupling of different FE approximations is also addressed. The present approach is assessed on homogeneous and sandwich structures. It is compared with classical Multiple Point Constraints vias penalty. The study has shown the need of the introduction of a new operator for the layered structures. The results are very promising.
This article refers to the historical evolution of the connection of the national history contents to the local history ones throughout the subject History of Cuba, in the second stage of the ...Elementary Education. For academic studies the period of the ruling Revolution is divided into four stages, where the continuous improvement of the Cuban National System of Education, since the very beginning of the triumph of the Revolution, in the teaching-learning process of the subject on focus is showed. For the stages analysis are taken into account the research elements that allows going deeper in such improvement, the methods and teaching aids, as well as the particularities of the local history contents. This analysis shows the main characteristics of the stages, and the general trends of the historical research done from the target research elements.
This article analyzes the work of a distinguished Russian philosopher, historian, and political scientist Alexei A. Kara-Murza. Kara-Murza has been developing unique genres of philosophic study, ...including philosophical travelology and a local study approach that lies at the junction of the philosophical investigation into the history of Russia and historical examination of local places. The method he is advancing could be called an "intellectual topography of Russian history." This method of philosophical-historical research pioneered by Kara-Murza assumes an inquiry into the genesis of ideas, images, and artistic and historical associations that have been emerging as the cultural spaces of Russia and Europe meet and mingle: the semantic topoi of cultures that encourage thinkers and writers into creative and philosophical reflection.
