In recent years, there has been a significant increase in research on mediated communication
social touch. Previous studies indicated that mediated social touch (MST) can induce similar positive ...outcomes to interpersonal touch. However, studies investigating the user experience of MST technology predominantly involve brief experiments that are performed in well-controlled laboratory conditions. Hence, it is still unknown how MST affects the relationship and communication between physically separated partners in a romantic relationship, in a naturalistic setting and over a longer period of time. In a longitudinal explorative field study, the effects of MST on social connectedness and longing for touch among geographically separated romantic couples were investigated in a naturalistic setting. For 2 weeks, 17 couples used haptic bracelets, that were connected
the internet, to exchange mediated squeeze-like touch signals. Before and after this period, they reported their feelings of social connectedness and longing for touch through questionnaires. The results show that the use of haptic bracelets (1) enhanced social connectedness among geographically separated couples but (2) did not affect their longing for touch. Interviews conducted at the end of the study were analyzed following the thematic analysis method to generate prominent themes and patterns in using MST technology among participant couples. Two main themes were generated that captured (a) the way the bracelets fostered a positive one-to-one connection between partners and (b) the way in which participants worked around their frustrations with the bracelets. Detailed findings and limitations of this longitudinal field study are further discussed, and suggestions are made for future research.
We present the study of the bromalites retrieved from the Upper Jurassic Ameghino (=Nordenskjöld) Formation at Longing Gap in the Antarctic Peninsula. The material was morphologically and chemically ...analyzed. We made a qualitative study and a taphonomic analysis of the specimens and tested paleobiological and paleoecological hypotheses. We conclude that the samples analyzed are coprolites and propose a new ichnotaxon, Antarctoscoprus longinensis ichnogen. and ichnosp. nov., characterized by being a small and flat coprolite differing from other ichnogenera by its composition, which consists mainly of actinopterygian remains (e.g., scales, vertebrae, skull bones, and teeth). Antarctoscoprus longinensis includes three morphotypes (i.e., circular, subcircular, and elongated) derived from an elongated three-dimensional original form by compactation. Based on the internal content, we infer the producers of the coprolites were carnivorous predators, putatively an ichthyophagous taxon. Due to the abundance of actinopterygians—mainly aspidorhynchids and ichthyodectids— and the size of the coprolites we propose macropredator fishes as the putative producers. The mainly undisrupted fish carcasses and coprolites allow us to conduct further studies that might lead to a better understanding of the ancient communities living in the Late Jurassic Sea that surrounded Antarctica.
Objective(s)
Yearning, a hallmark of grief disorders, relates to rumination and potentially to cognitive avoidance. We developed an 8‐item short form of the only existing validated yearning measure, ...the Yearning in Situations of Loss Scale (YSL), to improve its validity and administration ease.
Method
Cross‐sectional surveys were conducted among bereaved Dutch (N = 313) and German (N = 235) community samples and an American treatment‐seeking sample (N = 95). All samples completed the YSL, and community samples additionally measures of rumination, loss‐related avoidance, complicated grief (CG), and depression.
Results
A one‐factor model provided a good fit to the YSL Short Form (YSL‐SF) in the community samples. A two‐factor structure (cognitive and emotional yearning)best fitted the YSL‐SF in the treatment‐seeking sample. YSL‐SF scores correlated positively with rumination, loss‐related avoidance, and with CG symptoms whilst controlling for rumination and loss‐related avoidance.
Conclusion
The YSL‐SF appears an easy‐to‐administer and valid measure of yearning after bereavement.
In Polish philosophical aesthetics Karol Tarnowski’s considerations about art reflect transformations that occurred in phenomenology — particularly French — in the second half of the 20th century. Religious thinking combined with the scholastic tradition and the classical doctrine of transcendentals turn out to be similar in many aspects, but still not identical with Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenology of givenness and Michel Henry’s nonintentional phenomenology of invisible life. The aesthetic views of Karol Tarnowski, an outstanding philosopher of religion and pianist himself, can be found in scattered texts whose main subject matter is not always art. This is why the article aims at a synthetic presentation of this particular reflection in the context of current debates around phenomenology.
This article reflects on 4 years of research activities in the fields of horticulture and creative praxis. The initial project was a personal one and set out with a simple methodology of collecting, ...observing, and recording a specific genus of plants, that of Mentha. But as the specific question of whether a garden can, or should, be thought of as a work of art was raised it developed into an interactive, more‐than‐human dynamic between the researcher and multiple species. Ultimately, this led to a consideration of the positionality and interactions of the creative practitioner as critical, in order to develop a transdisciplinary praxis that explores the ecological and transformative potential of learning and healing through gardening. Through a reflexive narrative approach, the role of gardening in education, therefore, is positioned as an art and design praxis and as a partial remedy for several salient, contemporary global issues and challenges. A praxis that if not the complete remedy might at least help, in part, to remedy the damaging ecological experiences of adult and child learners alike, and as such, this article concludes with a provocation for teachers as artists and activists.
Violent conflict forced millions of Syrians to flee their homes to host countries. This study examines Syrian refugee women's experiences from the war's outset through their journey to Jordan. It ...addresses the toll this journey had on their lives.
Twenty-four in-depth interviews were completed with Syrian refugee women who currently reside in urban areas of Jordan. Researchers translated, transcribed, and analyzed the interviews using group narrative methodology.
The Syrian women had unique nostalgic memories of times before the war. They experienced atrocities during the war that forced their decision to escape Syria. Their journey narratives testify of internal displacement, personal and collective traumatic journeys via legal and illegal routes. Almost all the women were placed in refugee camps during their transitions to host country residency. In Jordan, they faced diverse hurdles of displacement and extremely different realities compared to the ones they had in Syria. Despite how very different but difficult each of their journeys were, every single woman longed to return home to Syria.
This study presents a new understanding of the role and process of the journeys undertaken and highlights the concept of "return" as the defining element for Syrian refugee women. Regardless of the hardships women endured to escape their homeland to find safety, "return" marks an ending to their horror journey and the beginning of a new journey of hope for a better future.
We describe osteichthyan remains from the Upper Jurassic of the Ameghino (= Nordenskjöld) Formation of the Antarctic Peninsula. The fossils are referred to a suspension-feeding pachycormid based on ...the shape, morphology, and presence of acus fanunculi (needle teeth) on their gill rakers. Due to the fragmentary condition of the Antarctic material, we refer it to aff. Asthenocormus. The remains described here represent the first record of a suspension-feeding pachycormid from the Upper Jurassic of the Antarctic Peninsula and the oldest pachycormid yet recovered from Antarctica. The new fossil fish supports a possible early dispersal route through the Mozambique Corridor (= Trans-Gondwana or South African Seaway). We also describe the weathering produced by modern lichens, which might be misinterpreted as original bone structure.
This paper offers an analysis of the poetic representations of lost homeland and exile in the poetry of the exiled poet, Agha Shahid Ali. It endeavors to bring into focus the question of home and ...exile and the idea of writing and living far away from home, which may approach the correlation between the state of exile and the poet's sense of pain and loss. The paper concentrates exclusively on the collection the Country Without a Post Office (1991) which narrates a special experience of exile. The paper applies theoretical perspectives on the exile and the emotional states associated with it such as loss, pain, nostalgia and longing for home. It examines the different approaches employed by the poet in depicting pain, suffering and agony for his homeland.
