Despite poetry’s important role in improving linguistic skills and creative thinking, students often find poetry writing to be difficult and boring. This study is an investigation of how the digital ...Poetry Machine influences students’ poetry writing by applying AI techniques. It uses qualitative and quantitative analysis of the log data of poems that the seventh graders wrote with the Poetry Machine. The results show that the draft poems functioned as affordances, which the students followed as models. The drafts encouraged students to experiment with several different poetic features. The data suggest an association between the number of edited versions and the quality of the final poem. The results suggest that a co-creative AI-based tool inspires and supports those students who engage in the writing process, and the poems are developed from the first versions. More studies regarding the role of AI based digital tools in developing students’ writing competencies would be worthwhile.
•A co-creative AI-based tool inspires and supports students who engage in the poetry writing process.•The draft poems produced by the AI-based Poetry Machine function as affordances, which the students follow as models.•The students need more opportunities to use of AI-based tools for writing at school.
Adult Lower Secondary Education is an education program for basic qualifications for the labor market. Our study aimed to compare lifetime mental health problems between current Adult Lower Secondary ...Education students and higher Vocational Education students, as the former constitutes a highly distinct and understudied group.
Findings were based on a cross-sectional self-report survey. Lifetime relative odds of occurrence of mental disorders i.e., psychiatric disorders typically diagnosed in adults, learning difficulties or deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were compared between Adult Lower Secondary Education students (
= 134) and Vocational Education students (
= 149).
While the frequency of mental health problems was high in both groups, psychiatric disorders typically diagnosed in adults were more common in Adult Lower Secondary Education students than among other students. Vocational Education students reported higher rates of ADHD.
There is a need for additional psychological resources for Adult Lower Secondary Education students, an educational level that is the last path for many to acquire a basic degree.

There is a wide debate on the convenience of grade retention for students’ future cognitive development. Nevertheless, due to the endogenous characteristics of grade retention to explain students’ ...academic performance, most of the literature fails in capturing its actual influence. In the present research, we intend to get as close as possible to the causal effect of grade retention on lower secondary education students’ academic competences. In order to do this, we employ rich administrative census and longitudinal data from the most populated region of Spain (Andalusia) using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation method with student fixed-effects within-students between-academic years. Our results show a positive influence of grade retention on students’ academic competences in the short term in mathematics but a null one in reading.
Previous research has linked demographic shifts in mental health issues among adolescents to a rise in personal expectations and a strong performance imperative, particularly within the educational ...system. This study aims to understand how early adolescents' experiences of school-related performance demands and their general well-being are structured by class, gender and school context. Along with short-term participant observations, focus group and individual interviews were conducted within four schools varying greatly in the socioeconomic status of the school district, performance level and location (n = 80). Connections between experiences of school-related performance demands, self-critique and mental health complaints, along with experiences of high performance demands outside of school, were more often found among pupils in schools located in high-resource areas. Schools in areas with lower socioeconomic status tended to be less competitive environments and provide alternatives to high performance within the school context, especially for girls.
The role of epistemic beliefs in science (EBS) and socio-economic status (SES) on mathematics and science test results on both student- and school-level data was investigated via a secondary analysis ...of Estonian Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 survey data. The effective sample comprised 3991 students (52% girls, 48% boys) from 81 schools. Complementing bivariate correlation analysis, two-level regression models were computed where mathematics and science test scores were predicted from student- and school-level EBS as well as SES. Mathematics and science test scores had a medium-sized correlation with both EBS as well as SES on the student-level data. These correlations were larger on the school-level data. Multilevel analyses showed that both higher mathematics and science scores were predicted by male gender, higher student-level SES and EBS, and higher school-level SES. Higher school-level EBS significantly predicted better science test scores, but this was not the case with mathematics.
Inquiry-based learning (IBL) emphasizes learning through experiencing and constructing. Where IBL is often applied in science education, the conceptualization of IBL practices in mathematics ...education is less obvious. We compared students’ reports on IBL practices in two different teaching cultures as an attempt to better understand IBL practices in connection with overarching teaching cultures. In this study, we investigated IBL practices in lower-secondary mathematics lessons in the Beijing area and the Netherlands through a survey about the experiences and preferences of 858 Chinese students and 441 Dutch students. Results show that students from the Beijing sample reported experiencing IBL activities in most mathematics lessons, while students from the Dutch sample reported them in some lessons, and both preferred the same amount of IBL activities as they experienced. The Dutch sample reported little experience with posing questions to tackle. The study also suggests a correlation between IBL experience and IBL preference of each class: students with more IBL experience are likely to show a higher preference for IBL activities. Results of this study do not confirm expectations based on stereotypes about the two teaching cultures. The students’ perspective in both samples suggests that providing complex problems and organizing group work have potential for further encouraging IBL in mathematics.
