Martin Buber’s writings on technology are scarce and seemingly subordinated to what he described in I and Thou as the “tyranny of the It”. But a closer look at his writings reveals, in fact, a ...life-long reflection on the dialogical potentiality of things—whether artworks, buildings, or machines—that echoed broader discourses on technology at the time. Beginning with Julius Goldstein’s Die Technik (1912), which Buber edited for his series Die Gesellschaft, and concluding with Buber’s reception and critique of Heidegger, especially during the 1950s, we can see that Buber critically engaged with the question of technology with respect to labor and community, art and artisanship, and the ethics of thinghood. The essay contextualizes Buber’s repeated call to “humanize technology” in early 20th-century debates on technology and in the post-1945 crisis of humanism. What it argues is that Buber framed technology not only through its aesthetic potential, as Werk, but also as another form of solidarity and care without which community and respect for our environment would not be possible.

Yanco takes steps to redress this imbalance. After briefly telling the familiar story of King's civil rights campaigns and accomplishments, she considers the lesser-known concerns that are an essential part of his legacy. Yanco reminds us that King was a strong critic of militarism who argued that the United States should take the lead in promoting peaceful solutions rather than imposing its will through military might; that growing materialism and an ethos of greed was damaging the moral and spiritual health of the country; and that in a nation where racism continues unabated, white Americans need to educate themselves about racism and its history and take their part in the weighty task of dismantling it.

Did post-Enlightenment philosophers reject the idea of original sin and hence the view that life is a quest for redemption from it? In Philosophical Myths of the Fall, Stephen Mulhall identifies and ...evaluates a surprising ethical-religious dimension in the work of three highly influential philosophers - Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. He asks: Is the Christian idea of humanity as structurally flawed something that these three thinkers aim simply to criticize? Or do they, rather, end up by reproducing secular variants of the same mythology? Mulhall argues that each, in different ways, develops a conception of human beings as in need of redemption: in their work, we appear to be not so much capable of or prone to error and fantasy, but instead structurally perverse, living in untruth. In this respect, their work is more closely aligned to the Christian perspective than to the mainstream of the Enlightenment. However, all three thinkers explicitly reject any religious understanding of human perversity; indeed, they regard the very understanding of human beings as originally sinful as central to that from which we must be redeemed.And yet each also reproduces central elements of that understanding in his own thinking; each recounts his own myth of our Fall, and holds out his own image of redemption. The book concludes by asking whether this indebtedness to religion brings these philosophers' thinking closer to, or instead forces it further away from, the truth of the human condition.

The gold standard for measuring LDL-C is impractical for routine use while direct measurements have numerous shortcomings. This study investigated the correlation of predictive equations with currently used enzymatic assays in populations where these have historically proven unreliable to determine whether equations may be used interchangeably. No reference measure was available for comparison in this study.
We examined two analytical datasets from different platforms to evaluate the correlation of predictive equations for LDL-C (Friedewald, Sampson-NIH2, Martin-Hopkins, Extended Martin-Hopkins, Hattori and Anandaraja) with direct LDL-C assays in a large paediatric (n = 7598) and an adult cohort with uncontrolled diabetes (n = 57165). Non-parametric statistics were used for comparison.
In the paediatric cohort, the Sampson-NIH2 equation correlated best with the direct LDL-C assays with the most values falling within desirable bias (35.9–44%) and TEa (68.6–72.9%) and the lowest RMSE (0.5904–0.6138) across platforms, but tended to underestimate LDL-C levels. The Martin-Hopkins equation is less likely to underestimate these values. In diabetes, the Martin-Hopkins equation correlated the best with values falling within acceptable bias (40.2–50.5%) and TEa (75–80.6%). In hypertriglyceridaemia the Extended Martin-Hopkins equation correlates best with the direct LDL-C assays.
Different measurement platforms influence the results of predictive equations and directly measured LDL-C. We propose utilising the Martin-Hopkins equation as an alternative to dLDL-C assays in adults with diabetes and for screening purposes in paediatric populations to avoid underestimating cardiovascular risk.

In Time and Death Carol White articulates a vision of Martin Heidegger's work which grows out of a new understanding of what he was trying to address in his discussion of death. Acknowledging that ...the discussion of this issue in Heidegger's major work Being and Time is often far from clear, White presents a new interpretation of Heidegger which short-circuits many of the traditional criticisms. White claims that we are all in a better position to understand Heidegger's insights after fifty years because they have now become a part of the conventional wisdom of common opinion. His view shows up in accounts of knowledge in the physical sciences, in the assumptions of the social sciences, in art and film, even in popular culture in general, but does so in ways ignorant of their origins. Now that these insights have filtered down into the culture at large, we can make Heidegger intelligible in a way that perhaps he himself could not. White presents the best possible case for Heidegger, making him more intelligible to those people with a long acquaintance with his work, those with a long aversion to it and in particular to those just starting to pursue an interest in it. White places the problems with which Heidegger is dealing in the context of issues in contemporary Anglo-American philosophy, in order to better locate him for the more mainstream audience. The language and approach of the book is able to accommodate the novice but also offers much food for thought for the Heidegger scholar.
