This article critically assesses celebrities' labour on the red carpet, with particular attention to the ways in which they engage with a variety of social and political issues. Through a discursive ...analysis of three 2019 red carpet events, we explore how the norms and values of the red carpet demand different forms of aesthetic and emotional labour from celebrities. We specifically theorise the concept red carpet labour as the multiple intersecting forms of work that celebrities negotiate on the red carpet, which create and constrain the possibilities for them to intervene in broader cultural conversations during their red carpet appearances. These intersecting forms of labour are laid out in a three-part conceptual framework that argues for scholarly attention to how celebrities (1) participate in the construction of red carpets as pseudoevents, (2) work to create a self-brand on the red carpet, and (3) cultivate relationships with the fashion world.

Portugal e o regime do ...Estado Novo passaram a ser assiduamente notícia nos jornais estrangeiros. E contra a vontade de Salazar, o regime viu-se sujeito às constrições de uma sociedade dos media de massa e da sua capacidade de influência nos processos de simbolização e da formação de correntes de opinião. Assumindo que a imprensa é um ator político de primeiro plano na constituição do mundo social, cultural e político, este livro conduz-nos por um estudo de um amplo acervo de artigos saídos nos jornais portugueses, britânicos e franceses ao longo do annus horribilis de 1961, atento aos símbolos, à linguagem, à comunicação de massa, ao condicionamento psicológico, à diplomacia mediática e à guerra. Através de uma abordagem que combina a Sociolo gia, a História, as Ciências da Comunicação, os Estudos de Media e das Relações Internacionais, a autora examina as lu tas políticas travadas pelo regime e contra o regime, num qua dro internacional marcado por dinâmicas de descolonização e pela guerra fria. Privilegiando sempre a ação da imprensa na história política e a história política impelida pela força produtiva da imprensa.
In this article, we analyse a 2013 press conference hosting the world’s first tasting of a laboratory grown hamburger. We explore this as a media event: an exceptional performative moment in which ...common meanings are mobilised and a connection to a shared centre of reality is offered. We develop our own theoretical contribution – the promotional public – to characterise the affirmative and partial patchwork of carefully selected actors invoked during the burger tasting. Our account draws on three areas of analysis: interview data with the scientists who developed the burger, media analysis of the streamed press conference itself and media analysis of social media during and following the event. We argue that the call to witness an experiment is a form of promotion and that such promotional material also offers an address that invokes a public with its attendant tensions.

This article sheds theoretical and empirical light on the ritual media events constructed around the deaths of three Cold War political leaders in the 1980s: the Finnish president, Urho Kekkonen ...(1900-1986), the Swedish prime minister, Olof Palme (1927-1986), and the Soviet Union general secretary, Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982). Investigating news articles published in the first days after the news of each death broke, as well as news articles on the funeral for each and the immediate aftermath, this study utilises historical news television and print media material, obtained from the national and media archives in Finland, Sweden and Russia. By bringing the study of media culture and history into a dialogue shared with anthropology and political history, this article produces new knowledge on the workings and outcomes of ritual media events in the context of Cold War history. The article places special emphasis on Victor Turner's ritual analysis and the ways in which power was symbolically transformed in these societies with different political and ideological histories.
In this article, I examined South Korean, North Korean, and British newspaper coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics in order to identify the diplomatic gestures ...and conduct presented during these ceremonial events. This study looks at three diplomatically important components of the opening and closing ceremonies: artistic performance, a parade of nations, and the presence of world leaders. The media coverage of these components reveals that (1) the dissemination of a message of peace and unity, (2) the representation of unified Korean identity and Korean cultural heritage, and (3) the communication and negotiation between the high-level state officials are the three most visible acts of diplomacy at these celebrational occasions of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. In effect, the combination of cultural diplomacy, sport diplomacy, and interstate diplomacy is actively at work during these ritualistic events. Therefore, the Olympic ceremonies present a global podium where dynamic and dramatic games of diplomacy take place.
From the time a disaster strikes to the time of restoration and recovery, community FM broadcasting can be an important information source at the time of the disaster and for the restoration efforts ...in the affected region. While the value of community radio for information transmission during a disaster has been welldocumented, most previous research has not considered its role in the memory of disaster. This study shows that community FM broadcasting in disaster-stricken areas can play a supportive role in the making of a collective memory of the disaster, which can be important for future disaster resilience. In-depth interviews were conducted with staff members from 11 community FM radio stations in areas that suffered severe damages by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The study also analyzed regular programs related to the disaster and special programs on the Memorial Day of 3. 11 aired by 27 community FM stations in the region in 2018 and 2019. This study illustrates how FM broadcasting can create a ritual space for the intergenerational transmission of memories and, in this case, the re-imagining of a collective identity of “Us, the disaster-survivors’ community.”
INTRODUCTION: Timely and effective early warning of new media events not only provides academic value to the study of new media events, but also can play a positive role in promoting the resolution ...of public opinion.
OBJECTIVES: Aiming at the current research on early warning of new media events, there are problems such as the theoretical research is not in-depth and the early warning model is not comprehensive.
METHOD: In this paper, K-means and seasonal optimization algorithm are used to construct new media event early warning method. Firstly, by analyzing the construction process of new media event early warning system, extracting text feature vector and carrying out text feature dimensionality reduction; then, combining with the random forest algorithm, the new media event early warning method based on intelligent optimization algorithm optimizing K-means clustering algorithm is proposed; finally, the validity and superiority of the proposed method is verified through the analysis of simulation experiments.
RESULTS: The method developed in this paper improves the accuracy, time performance of new media event warning techniques.
CONCLUSION: Addresses the lack of comprehensiveness of current approaches to early warning of new media events.
